    3. Thanks to Mike and Anthony for your reply. Mike the family you have is correct. I have been looking at the Lines family for some time now and am having recently connected my George Lines (born Bower Heath about 1795) Blacksmith of Wheathamsptead. George is the son of Joseph Lines and Sarah. Joseph is the blacksmith of Bower Heath at the time of George's birth. There is a brother to George Lines called Joseph and he is the blacksmith in Harpenden. >From that point there is a long history of Lines blacksmiths in Harpenden. I had discovered that a John Lines son of the blacksmiths of Harpenden did become a grocer in London There has been previous work on the family and I am wanting to look at that in detail. I have been picking away at my side of the family for many years now and also have my postings on the Wheathampstead web site. Again much appreciated getting the 1911 information. 3. Gay I am curious why you thought John Montague would be a blacksmith as his father also John was a grocer at the same address. His grandfather Henry (born Great Gaddesdon) was a blacksmith as was his grandfather Joseph (born Bowes Heath). Your John's father was at school in 1861 and already a grocer in 1871 (in Southwark). The Lines blacksmiths have been well researched. Are you familiar with the family history pages on www.wheathampstead.net ? 3. Hi all, For the last few weeks I've been busy transcribing the PRs for a few villages in the Chrishall area (Within the borders of Essex) for a genealogy tool I'm putting together. The tool is essentially an offline searchable transcribed and indexed copy of the parish registers, which should allow anyone to easily find any entries they're looking for. I'll be offering the application as a free download from my website, with downloadable PRs to add the application as they are completed. The application itself is almost ready to release, but if anyone needs any lookups for the PRs in the area please let me know and I can use them to test the tool. I've already found several of my own relations from entries that do not appear on Familysearch.org :) Cheers, Tony (Hoping there isn't already a tool out there that does the same thing...)

On the original 1911 site I can find all that is wanted but have run out of credits, BUT it does not show up on Find My Past to which I can get on to. What is wanted is the Enumerators list for that part about No 33 ( looking for neighbours a number of places up the street ) No 33 might well be W. Clark, butcher. If anybody can help me find this part of Amwell End on the Enumerators book would be wonderful. Daphne New Zealand.

    3. Transcriptions from parish registers in the London Metropolitan Archives have been available on Ancestry since earlier this year. For marriages after 1837 the register has the same format as a GRO certificate so big savings in time and expense to be made there. There are untranscribed scans going even further back. The reason I am so interested in Serge Hill, is because I have a book that belonged to my Grandfather (Herman Nullmeyer b. 1873). This book ( Pilgrims Progress) was presented to him in 1914 by,  Harvey. C. Perkins and Percy G. Simmonds. It reads  "To Sergeant. Herman Nullmeyer, in remembrance of Hyde Park 1914. My grandfather was attached to the, Queens Westminster Rifles, 1914-1918 rank of CSM. Also 1st. Middlesex R.V 1895-1900 The information below I found last week, having had my memory jogged re. 1st WW. I thought to my self what did happen in Hyde Park in 1914.                                                                                                                                  August 1914 Hemel Hempstead, in Hertfordshire. The Queen's Westminster Rifles marched (as part of the 2nd London Division) from Hyde Park to Edgware on 16 August 1914 and then on the following day to the St Alban's area. At Leverstock Green they carried out a systematic course of hard training in preparation for their departure for France. In a completely different search I looked for Herman's mother on the 1911 census, when I found that she was the House keeper at Serge Hill House, I thought that the two  must be linked. >From the information found, it looks like Mary Anne was housekeeper to the Solly family. I wonder if  Capt. H. Solly had links with the "Queens Westminster Rifle's" I think another family History mystery, may have been solved. Rg. Lynne

    3. Most churches, where burials are still carried out, maintain a grave register. This is in addition to the burial register. As far as I am aware this wasn't a mandatory practice in the past. (Not sure that it is mandatory even these days). In my own parish for example, the grave register was only started in the 20th century. The purpose of the grave register is mainly to ensure that existing graves are not inadvertently used by mistake and to identify graves where a family member is to be buried with a family member. Additionally, only a certain number of people can be buried in a grave, depending on the depth of the original grave. I also understand from our parish administrator, that they dont always know if ashes have been placed in a grave, as the family have been known to dig a small hole for the urn without informing the church.
