    1. [HRT] Naming Patterns
    2. Billeye
    3. Thank you Sandra for your thoughts which in general mirror my own. I have found however that naming disciplines varied enormously in England, sometimes more predictable in some counties/areas than others. This is why I floated the query on the HRT List, fishing for some clue that a pattern may have existed in the area or, as I have experienced, no pattern at all except for like you say, a propensity for a small group of given names. Repetition of the same group of names leads to some difficulty in sorting the wheat from the chaff, but at least the Scots were quite disciplined in their long established naming pattern. Names were quite predictable. Like you, I take nothing as gospel as far as this subject is concerned, but once a pattern is discovered and maintained, it can well assist our never-ending quest for ensuring that we have the full picture, or family. Just another consideration which may assist in our research and open our eyes in regard to changes over the centuries. Thanks again, Bill Sandra J Smith wrote: > Bill, > Patterns in naming one's children are fraught with difficulty; much depended > upon family tradition rather than a regional or national tradition. > In SOME families, the tradition was first son named for paternal > grandfather, 2nd son for father, later sons for paternal brothers. 3. G'day Folks, I wonder whether anyone knows of a particular naming pattern for children in earlier times. I ask because many of my families of interest left the naming of children for parents and grandparents to "later", ie, younger siblings. Any comments please? Bill Melbourne, Oz

    3. Bill, Patterns in naming one's children are fraught with difficulty; much depended upon family tradition rather than a regional or national tradition. In SOME families, the tradition was first son named for paternal grandfather, 2nd son for father, later sons for paternal brothers. Other families would bring in the names of the wife's male relatives before the brothers. If such a tradition existed, it was further complicated by the demise of many infants and the renaming of subsequent children with those names, so they then become "out of order". Personally, (after 42 years of genealogical research), I place no credence on naming patterns, but note that some families have a propensity for sticking to the same small group of names. I may suggest that some children were named after close friends and neighbours as much as family which accounts for the odd unusual name that suddenly crops up. Hope this helps Sandra ----- Original Message ----- From: "Billeye" <billeye@optusnet.com.au> To: <eng-hertfordshire@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, December 03, 2009 8:11 AM Subject: [HRT] Naming Patterns > G'day Folks, > > I wonder whether anyone knows of a particular naming pattern for > children in earlier times. > > I ask because many of my families of interest left the naming of > children for parents and grandparents to "later", ie, younger siblings. > > Any comments please? > > Bill > Melbourne, Oz > > > Hertfordshire Surnames List > > http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~hughw/hertford.html > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > ENG-HERTFORDSHIRE-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without > the quotes in the subject and the body of the message > > _______________________________________ > No viruses found in this incoming message > Scanned by iolo AntiVirus 1.5.7.1 > http://www.iolo.com > _______________________________________ No viruses found in this outgoing message Scanned by iolo AntiVirus 1.5.7.1 http://www.iolo.com

    3. Hi all, I've looked around on the Rootsweb website for any rules against self-plugging / advertising but I couldn't find any. Apologies if I'm annoying anyone, but hopefully you can see the benefits :) I've just uploaded the first beta version of the tool, which contains the transcribed PRs for Wendon Lofts, Little Chishill, Heydon and the first installment of the Chrishall PRs. I hope to add more PRs in the future and a few extra bells and whistles, if anyone would like to donate any PRs to the cause I'd be more than happy to accept them! (I've gone through 2 packs of paracetamols!). The tool can be downloaded from: http://www.pottrell.com/archidex/Archidex v1.0b.zip (18MB) or if you have 7zip you can download it from http://www.pottrell.com/archidex/Archidex v1.0b.7z (11MB) Please note that I've limited it to expire on the 7th of December as it's only a beta at this stage. 3. According to HALS Online Marriage Index (www.hertsdirect.org/ufs/ufsmain?esessionid=7E7CB245122C3DC2363933B41971C8C9_1), John HOOPER of Willian married Susannah GILES of Willian on 11 July 1802 at Willian. You can send off for a copy of the parish register record of the marriage from HALS which may give you a little more information if you are lucky. I can't find a baptism for John on the IGI, but according to the Militia Lists of Willian the only HOOPER recorded is a Benjamin HOOPER, Carpenter, for the year 1785 - perhaps a relation?? There is also an Apprenticeship record on HALS Index for this same Benjamin HOOPER, of Hitchin, dated 1 May 1775, father William HOOPER, apprenticed to William CORNELL, Carpenter & Joiner, of Hitchin. This Benjamin HOOPER was baptised at St Mary Hitchin on 20 August 1760, parents William & Susannah. William & Susannah had several other children according to extracted records on the IGI, including a brother John baptised on 13 August 1773, so could this perhaps be your John given that ages were rounded down to the nearest 5 years in the 1841 census. The other possibility is that your John may be the son of Benjamin, but Benjamin did not marry until 30 September 1782 according to HALS Online Index, so this is probably too late for him to be the father of your John who unfortunately looks as if he may have died before the 1851 census so we cannot obtain a more accurate birth date and place of birth. I also note that John HOOPER jnr shown on the previous page to your John has a son William - perhaps named after his grandfather?? There is a death registration for a John HOOPER in the December qtr 1841 at Hitchin reg district (contains the parish of Willian), vol 6, page 372 according to Ancestry (do check the reference nos for yourself before ordering) which could be your John. There is an extracted baptism on the IGI of a Susanna GILES on 20 September 1778 at Willian, parents John & Susanna. There is a marriage for this couple on HALS Online Marriage Index which will give you Susanna snr's maiden name.
