    3. Good morning and seasons greetings to all. Can anyone tell me if there is a register of recipient of the MBE. Albert Davis was one of my grandmothers brothers, and I am trying to find out why and when he was given this award sometime in the 1920-1930. 3. Good Morning Stella If in doubt go to the www.gro.gov.uk site and Register/Log in. You choose Death certificates (overseas); I just checked that this includes marine deaths. The Genealogist requires a subscription or possibly you can buy credits but I think you can trust me on this one. The GRO index merely shows name, age, vessel and the page number. It is a really nice web site for the UK but does not have as much stuff as Ancestry. 3. Stella The death was registered. It is found under "Marine Deaths for the year 1919" on page 87. The Index is available on The Genealogist. I am not sure how you go about ordering the certificate from ONS but it might be quite straightforward. Whether or not this will lead you to his grave is another matter. Southgate was a London Borough (and is now part of Enfield). It was literally the south gate of Enfield Chase. 3. Mary, I am descended from William Breed (baptd 1789), Sarah's brother. Sarah (Froy) may have been buried at St John's Road, Hitchin. This cemetery largely replaced St Mary's, Hitchin from about 1857. To confirm this I suggest you contact Carol Casey, Burials Officer for N Herts Council (a most helpful lady). 3. Hello Philip: I will give this lady a call later this week. That is very helpful information. Do you have any other information on the Breed family as I tend to spread out into the families not just sticking with my line? I find it interesting to see what the rest of the families are doing. Again, thanks for the help. 3. Hi Mary, UK census finds Sarah a widow in 1861 and not present 1871. She lived 1841 to 1861 at Hitchin, Herts. FreeBMD only shows one Sarah Froy death in 1861 and that was Dec Qtr 1863 at Hitchin,3a,173. So that's her death sorted. Some local may be able to search registers for her parentage and burial. May be worth getting death cert, so you have exact death date and place --but that's all you would get on the cert. Cheers, John in Aus. ----- Original Message ----- From: "naig1313" <naig1313@atlantic.net> To: <eng-hertfordshire-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, December 13, 2009 7:30 AM Subject: [HRT] Sarah Breed 1796 > Sarah Breed born abt 1796 in Offley Hertfordshire married William Froy 16 > May 1818. 3. There is a Public Member Tree (French21) on Ancestry that deals with the family and had already identified that Sarah was possibly the daughter of John Breed (1763-1852) and Susannah Hawkes (1763-1830). John in turn is son of Thomas Breed b, 1724 and Mary Davis b. 1728. Both John and Thomas are shown as born Standon, Beds. As you may know Offley is close to the Herts/Beds county line. The tree referred to has lots more on the Froy family. Of course there is the usual rider that trees can be inaccurate and you would need to examine the original sources. 3. Dear Mary, Although census returns support a birth 1796, the IGI shows a Sarah Breed baptised at Offley 4 May 1794 daughter of John Breed and Susannah. This was the only couple bringing children to the church at this period and if you go to familysearch.com, which is free, you should be able to identify siblings. A discrepancy of 2 years at this date is not a big thing: Sarah could have been unsure of her age or purposely rounded it down; IGI could have a transcription error. Another possibility is that 1794 Sarah died and a new baby born 1796 was given the same name. This was not at all unusual but why then is there no record of a second baptism on IGI? No doubt the actual area varied throughout the country. I didn't pursue it further. FWIW Mike -- I am using the free version of SPAMfighter. We are a community of 6 million users fighting spam. 1. [HRT] Defining the Hitchin Hundred
    2. Philip Wray
    3. Trying to understand the administrative district of the 'Hitchin Hundred'. A 'hundred' appears to equate to either the area which provided the host with 100 warriors or which measured 100 'hides'. A 'hide' has been defined as being between 40 and 120 acres. According to the Victorian County Histories, the 'Hitchin Hundred' comprised the parishes of Hitchin (including Preston, Walsworth and Langley), Pirton, Kings Walden, Ippollitts, Offley, Lilley, Ickleford and Kimpton. Helpfully, the VCH includes the acreage of most of these parishes which totals 20,447. The acreage of Hitchin township is not mentioned nor that of Kings Walden. If one estimates Hitchin Town as 1,500 acres and Kings Walden as 3,000, the total acreage of the 'Hitchin Hundred' is approximately 25,000. Unless this area provided 100 warriors, the other definition just doesn't compute (ie 25,000 divided by 100 = 250 and therefore a 'hide' in this county was around 250 acres). Probably, I'm missing or misunderstanding something. Can someone help, please? Philip Wray _________________________________________________________________ Add your Gmail and Yahoo! 3. Hi all, I'll not send out any more emails about the tool as I don't want to fill people's inboxes unnecessarily. I'll just release new versions every Sunday from now on where possible from the same download link as below: www.pottrell.com/archidex/Archidex.exe It's a self extracting archive, once downloaded double click on it and it will ask you where you want to extract it to. Once extracted, run the Archidex.exe file in the new folder. Future releases may include a Mac version if there is sufficient demand for it. The tool currently has just under 3000 entries at the moment from: Chrishall (1617-1761, in progress), Heydon (1558-1755), Great Chishall (1623 - 1655, in progress), Little Chishall (1577-1760), Wendon Lofts (1674-1812). More to come... Feedback, PR transcriptions and comments welcome :) Cheers all, Tony
