Notts., separated from Leics. by the Soar. 13 S. of Nottingham ; ac. 1,520 ; soil loam, overlying clay. The Dec. and Perp. church of St. John the Baptist was restored 1894. A number of brasses (some of them of great interest) have been stolen, but there remains a 15th-cent. one of a priest, as well of several marble monuments and other memorials. In the churchyard is a fine old yew. S. was a Roman settlement. S.
