----- Original Message ----- From: Martin Shilston To: Undisclosed-Recipient:; Sent: Tuesday, February 18, 2003 9:24 PM Subject: Virus Alert Dear All, A virus has been passed on to me by a contact and my address book has in turn been infected. Since you are in my address book there is a chance that you will find it in your computer too. I followed the instructions below and eradicated the virus easily. The virus (called jdbgmgr.exe) is not detected by Norton or Macafee anti-virus systems. The virus sits quietly for fourteen days before damaging the system. It is sent automatically by messenger and the address book, whether or not you send e-mails to your contacts. Here's how to check for the virus and get rid of it: 1. Go to Start, Find or Search option. 2. In the files/folders option, type the name: jdbgmgr.exe 3. Be sure you search your C Drive and all sub-folders and any other drives you may have. 4. Click: Find Now. 5. The virus has a grey teddy bear icon with the name jdbgmgr.exe -DO NOT OPEN IT. 6. Go to edit (on the menu bar) and choose SELECT ALL to highlight the file without opening it. 7. Now go to File (on the menu bar) and select DELETE. It will then go to the recycle bin. 8. Go to the recycle bin and delete it there aswell. If you find the virus, you must contact all the people in your address book so they can eradicate it from their address books. To do this: 1. Open a new e-mail message . 2. Click the icon of the address book next to the "To". 3. Highlight every name and add to "Bcc". 4. Copy this message, enter subject, paste to email and send. Remember you have to do this very quickly. Good Luck all. ______________________________________________________

THIS IS A HOAX which appears on the lists with depressing regularity. It relies on unwitting listers to perpetuate it by passing on the duff info.jdbgmgr. and its teddy bear icon is a normal part of your windows operating system and should not be deleted. I know it is a shock when you think you have a virus and the first thing you want to do is warn those that you have been in correspondence with but could I just make a plea - go first to an anti virus website and check for hoaxes Mcafee - http://vil.mcafee.com/hoax.asp or Norton http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/hoax.html Likewise, if a warning of a virus appears on a list check it out before doing ANYTHING to your computer and save yourself some grief. thanks Phil Parry-Williams ----- Original Message ----- From: "Janet Stacey" <jstacey@clear.net.nz> To: <ENG-HEREFORD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, February 20, 2003 12:31 AM Subject: [HEF] virus alert > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: Martin Shilston > To: Undisclosed-Recipient:; > Sent: Tuesday, February 18, 2003 9:24 PM > Subject: Virus Alert > > > Dear All, A virus has been passed on to me by a contact and my > address book has in turn been infected. jdbgmgr.exe is supposed to be there along with it's cute little bear icon. DO NOT DELETE it. The message telling you to do so is an attempt to make you damage your own system Mick Gurling Proud to be working on the FREECEN Project see our website at http://freecen.rootsweb.com All E-Mail sent is scanned for viruses before sending. -----Original Message----- From: Janet Stacey [mailto:jstacey@clear.net.nz] Sent: Wednesday, February 19, 2003 7:31 PM To: ENG-HEREFORD-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [HEF] virus alert ----- Original Message ----- From: Martin Shilston To: Undisclosed-Recipient:; Sent: Tuesday, February 18, 2003 9:24 PM Subject: Virus Alert Dear All, A virus has been passed on to me by a contact and my address book has in turn been infected.
