Thanks once again Alec for your speedy response. I was in England in April and finding myself with a day to spare, I made an unplanned visit to Hereford. I must say that everyone there was extremely helpful. I came away with lots of information which I have since been able to analyse and organise. I was also able to take photocopies of register entries and apply for some certificates. Subsequent research using internet resources has enabled me to reach preliminary conclusions that ultimately must lead to another visit to the Hereford CRO. My 3x Great Grandfather was James CHADWICK (or CHADDOCK) born about 1798 at Bullingham. He was baptised 1803 at Upper Bullingham, mother Mary CHADWICK. There are two other baptisms at Upper Bullingham ascribed to Mary CHADWICK; Margaret (1806) and Harriet (1817). Harriet died in 1818. There was another CHADWICK, Richard, born at Bullingham in 1806, but I haven't been able to locate his baptismal record. However, Richard appears in the 1841 census at Bullingham, on the same page as Mary CHADWICK. Mary died later in 1841 aged 83. There was also a Mary CHADWICK (nee BRYAN) who married Isaac CHADDOCK at Fownhope in 1792. There were 4 children: Francis (b. 1793), Charles (b. 1795), Catherine (c. 1797) and Lydia (c. 1800). I haven't found a baptismal record for Charles, but the others were baptised at Fownhope. Isaac died in 1796. Only Francis is ascribed to Isaac & Mary, Catherine and Lydia are ascribed to Mary CHADWICK only. It would be easy to reach the conclusion that the two Mary CHADWICKs are one and the same. However, my 3x Great Grandfather James identifies his birthplace as Bullingham in the various census. His birthdate of 1798 at Bullingham is inconsistent with the baptism of Lydia at Fownhope in 1800. If Mary had moved to Bullingham after the death of Isaac, then it would be reasonable to expect that Lydia be baptised at Bullingham and not Fownhope. I am about to apply for Mary's death certificate, but I do not expect it to add anything to the information that I have already. To summarise... Isaac CHADDOCK baptised at All Saints, HEREFORD 28 Apr 1767; parents JAMES CHADDOCK and Jane. Isaac CHADWICK married at St Mary, Fownhope 8 Nov 1792 to Mary BRYAN. Francis CHADDOCK baptised at St Mary, Fownhope 17 Mar 1793; parents Isaac CHADDOCK & Mary. Charles CHADDOCK born at Fownhope 1795 (Death Certificate). Catherine CHADDOCK baptised at St Mary, Fownhope 26 Feb 1797; mother Mary CHADDOCK. Lydia CHADDOCK baptised at St Mary, Fownhope 6 Apr 1800; mother Mary CHADDOCK. Isaac CHADWICK burial at St Mary, Fownhope 22 Apr 1796.
