What can cause problems in the Linton records is that in the 19th century, the adjacent area of Gorsley, a very rough area of land and people and known as"Heathens" Heath, was made into a parish of its own. Up till then Gorsley inhabitants had to go to Linton, Newent or Aston Ingham, if they were at the Cliffords Mesne end. To admit to being born in Gorsley was not a good thing, you tended to lose out when applying for a job! My grandfather (I can't find his christening either in 1881) and most of his siblings were born at the Steelworks farm in Gorsley, and on the censuses they are entered as being born in Linton- they never struck me as social climbers! Also Gorsley had then as now, a very active Baptist community. Sylvia I will wire up the old computer in the morning and look for your Margaret Williams. Roger Bailey
Interesting about Gorsley; I have seen that "abode" on the Linton PR.
