Hi Connie and Roger Having checked the census for the family that you gave the details of Mary consistently gives her birthplace as Linton, and John as Kempley. As they are living in Linton 1851, 1861 and 1871, it seems that's where she was born! Roger their children seem to be (from the census returns) - with the GRO references from FreeBMD given where they are on it, although it is VERY incomplete still for this period: Jane born about 1848 Kempley Births Dec 1848 DREW Jane Newent 11 360 Lydia Ellen bc 1850 Linton Mary bc 1852 Linton Births Sep 1852 DREW Mary Newent 6a 188 Ros.... bc 1854 Benjamin John bc 1856 Linton William bc 1857 Linton Martha Matilda bc 1859 Linton Births Dec 1860 DREW Martha Matilda Newent 6a 192 Selina bc 1861 Linton Elizabeth F bc 1870 Linton Births Sep 1870 DREW Elizabeth Frances Newent 6a 243 Ernest bc 1872 Linton Births Jun 1873 DREW Ernest Newent 6a 266 Note that Linton was in the Newent RD until 1895 when it was transferred to Ross RD. By 1881 they have moved over the border and are living at Oxenhall, GLS, and by 1891 they are living in Dymock, next door to one of my cousins Naomi LOAD! By 1901 they are back in HEF at Much Marcle. Their marriage is on FreeBMD: Marriages Sep 1848 DREW John Newent 11 419 JAMES Mary Newent 11 419 But if you do not already have this marriage certificate you need to get it before trying to find Mary's baptism, as it is quite possible that she was married under a different surname (eg if she was a widow, or her mother had remarried). So little hope of finding Mary in the Bromyard Linton I fear! Hope Roger can come up with something to help. Unfortunately the disk will not work on my new computer and I have had to dig out my old steam driven Windows 95 computer to run the disk: a quick check on births over a wide range of years showed a number of Drews. Sorry for the delay in getting down to the job, but I have been tied up with other things. Will the person on the original enquiry please reply. Polly, Thank you so much. So I am on the right track with Linton near Ross? Funny I can't find them in the films I am looking at right now at the FHC. Will look again.
