I have this reference - "Hereford Journal" 31 October 1776 - "Saturday last committed to the county gaol by the Rev.Dr.Woodcock, John VERRY, charged on the oath of Arnold Barrell with stealing a bay gelding, the property of Sir John Cotterell". The representative of the Cotterell family advised me years ago that the offense probably took place in Mansell Gamage. Many years ago I was advised by a London search agent that the Oxford Assize records were destroyed. But I wonder if any folks on this list may know of an alternative source which might identify which parish John was from (there are choices!) - and his ultimate fate. Act books appear to have survived for Gloucester and I'm wondering if those for Hereford have too. Adrian Verry
