    3. My ancestor WILLIAM HARTLAND was christened at Bodenham 28 May 1749 and I have from IGI his parents as being JOHN HARTLAND and ELIZABETH. Again from IGI it seems likely that William has siblings ANNE 1737; MARY 1739; MATHEW 1742 and JOHN 1745 - all christened Bodenham, plus a possible THOMAS 1735 at Pencombe pre-dating the others. Marriages on IGI again include to ELIZ. JONES Hereford 1738 (discounted as obvious progeny in Hereford) and ELIZ. BYTHELL 1743 Wellington (geographically OK but seems too late to be likely though not of course impossible). This leaves the most likely candidate as ELIZABETH ROWBERRY married 1 Sep 1729 either at Wacton or Edvin Ralph. This could fit with the 1735 birth at Pencombe (only just across the Bromyard/Leominster road.). Any help would be appreciated especially from Polly, as my lady may be one of yours ? Thanks in anticipation JOHN RICHARDSON ex HEF now 31 years in NZ (fine and sunny).

    3. Hi John Just to add to the confusion the HFHS Marriage index also gives a marriage of a John HARTLAND to an Elizabeth HOPTON on 30 Jun 1741 at Ashperton! As to the others that you mention the JH who married E JONES is from Haywood and the marriage was by Licence; and the one who married E BYTHELL was from Hereford St John. The one who married E ROWBERRY was according to the Wacton PR from Thornbury, and it is possible that his bride was baptised there in 1700 and it is also interesting to note that her half brother Stephen married in Bodenham in 1741. However I have a possible death for this Elizabeth at Thornbury in 1714 and of course a birth in 1749 would be a little late for her. Nonetheless it does seem likely on geographical and date grounds at least that this is the marriage that you are seeking - better datewise would be the Elizabeth R baptised in 1705 at Bishops Frome - her parents had married at Pencombe, so not impossible that she would have found employment in that area. Tell me more about what you know of John & Elizabeth HARTLAND's children, and if you have found any wills for the family or know what their occupations were. That might give some more clues.
