Dear Polly, Yes we thought it was strange. The man in question, JOHN HUGHES, was a coal miner in Glamorgan before moving to Wellington. From the reply to my previous enquiry on the ilst he was a coal miner at the birth of his daugher in 1917, Wellington, and a farmer on the birth certificate of his next child, Rowland, born Wellington 1921. 2. Annie May [HUGHES] NIXON born Wellington, Hereford, 1916 Father’s occupation, coal miner. Died at Basingstoke 24 Dec. 1966 3. Rowland John HUGHES, born Wellington, Hereford, 1921 Father’s occupation, a farmer. [I suspect farm worker] Taken prisoner of war and died from injuries aged 22 in March 1945. No known grave, memorial plaque in Holland John came from a rural background on Anglesey and must have given up mining when he moved to Wellington. The family's first language was [and stil is] Welsh but they were bilingual. They had two other children who were not born in Herefordshire. Thanks very much for the reply, it is a great help and I think confirms that he had given up coal mining. Best regards, WENDY
Hi Wendy It may well be that John was still working as a coalminer in S Wales when his daughter was born, or he may have been serving in the forces (this was during the time of the First World War). As the son was born well after that it may well be that he had settled down on a small holding in Wellington by then. You need to see if the children were baptised at Wellington - if so you may get a more likely occupation for their father in the baptism register.
