Hello, I'm looking for information on a James Wathen family of possibly Abbey Dore or Allensmore, Kingstone, Heref., who reportedly had a will executed in 1667, naming his five sons in his will. One of his heirs, John WATHEN, or John B. WATHEN, or John Barton WATHEN, is, I believe, my direct ancestor. Anyone to help? 3. Hi Steve, Thank you very much for your interest in WATHEN. I know very little about a Thomas WATHEN, but there are reports that a Thos. WATHEN/WARTHEN, settled in what is now northern Virginia ca. 1634. If you would like more info on him I'll find what I can, just let me know. Also, and just as important, if not more so, is my lucky acquaintance with a wonderful lady in South Bend, Indiana, Carol Collins who has been researching the WATHEN name for years, long before the days of the I-net. Whatever info she has you can best take to the bank. I have not met Carol face to face, I hope to some day, but she and I have been corresponding via email for several years. Carol is a wonderful source of information, especially relating to the WATHENS who came to our shores. All for now. Best regards, Bill Wathen ----- Original Message ----- From: "Stephen J. 3. Can anyone tell me if there is a full list of the Hereford Diocese wills available online? Or is it only available at the Herefordshire Records Office? Incidentally, some list members may be interested in the following message I posted to the Monmouthshire lists recently: [Some group members will recall that a some months ago the Family Records Centre advertised several batches of microfilms for disposal. I am pleased to announce that I put in a bid and was successful in obtaining two batches: Prerogative Court of Canterbury Wills, 1383-1858 (PROB 11) This comprises approximately 1883 reels of microfilm. Miscellaneous Foreign Returns of birth, marriage and death, 1831-1969 (RG 32) Foreign Registers and Returns of birth, marriage and death, 1627-1960 (RG 33) Miscellaneous Foreign marriage returns, 1826-1921 (RG 34) Miscellaneous Foreign death returns, 1830-1921 (RG 35) Registers and Returns of births, marriages and deaths in the Protectorates etc of Africa and Asia, 1895-1965 (RG 36) Indexes to Miscellaneous Foreign Returns of births, marriages and deaths (RG 43) This comprises approximately 110 reels of microfilm. I have deposited all the microfilms at the Gwent Record Office and the GRO has now informed me that they are now available for public use. Since these microfilms came from The National Archives, there are some restrictions on their use, chiefly a prohibition on digitisation. The GRO has full details. Despite my best efforts, there are a few gaps in the PCC Wills, which we are trying to fill. Many thanks to Tony Hopkins, Acting County Archivist and the GRO staff for their co-operation throughout this project and their efforts in making the microfilms available quickly. Also, special thanks to the two members of staff who drove all the way to Essex and back, to collect the microfilms! I am sure that these new resources will be of great benefit to all of us researching Family History in Gwent.] Thanks, Peter Williams ----- Original Message ----- From: "Stephen J. 1. [HEF] Hereford diocese wills
    2. Stephen J. Kelsey
    3. There does not exist a full list of the Hereford Diocese wills(even at the Hereford Record Office as far as I know). One way this would be accomplished would be from extraction of the act books which go from 1662 to 1858(FHL film nos, 91622 through 91628), which for Hereford Diocese are all indexed(some at the front and some at the back). The other way(since the wills are all registered)each register has an index as well--except for a brief period near 1800. The actual admons for this period do not seem to be available so extraction from the act books would include the listing of the admons which would be very useful I did prepare a listing of the pre-act book (before 1662)wills(FHL film numbers 91631 through 91677) which is probably about 90% complete. This exists as a stack of paper about 2 reams high which is typewritten or handwritten. This 90+% complete index was filmed by the LDS and is available on the FHL or on microfilm through the family history centers. It is a listing of the wills in the order they appear on the microfilm. They are somewhat arranged by surname but a couple of films have wills in no set order(neither date nor surname arrangement). Stephen J.
