    3. Hi Sylvia, By 1873 all the current Australian states were separate colonies, with separate record-keeping; so where to look depends on what port they went to - do you have any info on this? Also, do you know if they were assisted immigrants, or self funded? (most likely assisted, unless they were wealthy.) For self-funded, shipping lists are about the best you can hope for. For assisted immigrants there is a much better paper trail; the basic arrival records usually have birthplace, age, religion, read/write, parents names and residence, etc. Then there are land grant records and so on. I had a quick look at the New South Wales indexes which are online at http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/archives/indexes_online_3357.asp However they had no assisted POWELL to Sydney in years 1870-75. There are some in the Queensland assisted indexes for 1873: http://www.archives.qld.gov.au/research/indexes.asp POWELL names in the Qld index include the following who travelled in 1873 (date is arrival): "Great Queensland" 2 Sep 1873: Annie 24 "Landsborough" 24 Oct 1873: William H 18 "Gauntlet" 15 Nov 1873: William 44, Frank 22, Catherine 20, Mary Ann 20, Ann Elizabeth 18, Caroline 18, Emily 16 "Tim Whiffler" 26 Jan 1874: William 43, Caroline 38, William 13, Charles 9, Emily 7, Agnes 3 Other state archives may have similar indexes online - for Victoria I seem to recall there is; Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania I'm not so sure, but they all will have some sort of info online. There are also many online shipping records about the place, but I have always found the immigration records the best starting point. 3. Hi Steve, Are there any published records that (effectively) show the ratio of assisted to unassisted immigration? Asking because I am surprised that you say the unassisted would have been "wealthy".
