Hello List Can anyone assist me with my brickwall with my Beavan/Bevan family, please? Is anyone related to my Beavan or Lewis families, please? I know for certain that my Howell Lewis married a Sarah Bevan at Boughrood Parish Church Radnorshire on the 18 August 1824. A daughter of John and Sarah Beavan was baptised at Glasbury Parish Church Breconshire on 20 September 1801. Glasbury Church is just across the other side of the Wye River from Boughrood. The river divides the two counties. There are no other baptism's of any other children for John and Sarah Beavan at either churches. The only marriage that may relate to John and Sarah Beavan is one that took place at Cloddock and Longtown Parish Hereford by licence on 16 July 1801. This church is not too far away. John Beavan a farmer recorded that he was from Allansmore and Sarah was from Cloddock her maiden name was Lewis. In the Allansmore baptisms John is recorded as the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Beavan baptised 4 February 1775. Now comes the problem there are in total seven Thomas Beavan's marriages between 1771 and 1775 The one that looks most likely is 9 September 1768. Thomas Bevan to Elizabeth Lewis of Eaton Bishop. This Thomas Bevan is from Allensmore. Does any of the above tie in with your family, please? Do you know if I am on the right track? All the best Heather
Hi Heather, I can't assist with your brickwall but it just might be linked to our own. I remember we played about with possible Glasbury events too. In the end we decided from very local advice that there were so many Bevans in South Eastern Breconshire we should wait for a more enlightened time - should that ever arrive! I see no reason why our man might not have come from Allensmore, there was already a drift to South Wales. Our ancestors concerned were Thomas and Mary Bevan who raised their children in the Llanelly Breconshire area and it would seem they were also at one time near Wolvesnewton from the baptism of one child. From death certificates: Thomas Bevan died in Brynmawr 18 July 1843 aged 67 which if accurate would put his birth about 1776/1777. Place of birth - only from the 1841 census when he was in Breconshire - Out of County. His wife Mary died in Beaufort (nr Brynmawr) 12th July 1860 aged 81. From that and her age in 1851 she was born in the second half of 1778 and (from the 1851 census) in the parish of Llanelly Breconshire. We have been unable to settle with any confidence on a marriage for them and therefore her maiden name. Their eldest child, Mary was born in 1799. Their eldest son was baptised Lewis and born about 1802. Thomas and Mary raised ten children who all married and have been traced except the youngest, last found in 1841 aged 19. Telling you all this because our Thomas Bevan could possibly be a brother of the John Bevan you mention and son of Thomas Bevan and Elizabeth Lewis (refer the name of eldest son above). Maybe this is no more than a commiseration with you but if you do know anything that might help us both I'm sure we would like to put heads together and work with you. with kind regards, David On 9 May 2008, at 20:47, Heather Smith wrote: > Hello List > > Can anyone assist me with my brickwall with my Beavan/Bevan family, > please?
