Hi David "Legal adoption" in this case meant a countrywide (England & Wales) statutory basis for legalising adoptions, and giving an adopted child a new birth certificate showing the adoptive, rather than the natural parent(s). Adoption per se was of course "legal" before, but it was always a private process, sometimes just an informal one, or sometimes arranged with the assistance of a solicitor who would draw up some form of legal document as in Hilary's grandmother's case. That would normally indicate that one of the families were of good standing and able to afford such services. However the child would never have any other birth certificate, and while (s)he could change her name legally just like anyone else if they chose to, it could not be done by the adoptive parents. However they could "call" it whatever they liked, but in Hilary's case it looks as if her gandmother reverted to her birth name on marriage as that was still her legal name. Many thanks Polly, Does the new replacement birth certificate carry any sign that it is in fact a replacement because of adoption? cheers David On 14 Apr 2008, at 00:16, Polly Rubery wrote: > Hi David > > "Legal adoption" in this case meant a countrywide (England & Wales) > statutory basis for legalising adoptions, and giving an adopted > child a new > birth certificate showing the adoptive, rather than the natural > parent(s). > > Adoption per se was of course "legal" before, but it was always a > private > process, sometimes just an informal one, or sometimes arranged with > the > assistance of a solicitor who would draw up some form of legal > document as > in Hilary's grandmother's case. Hello, A little late on this thread, but was wondering if anyone has a situation where a boarder became a family member? Or rather just stayed on with a family? I have a young girl, born in a work house being a boarder with a family at aged 12. I have seen lots of other young boarders in census, sometimes several in the same house. Would these have just been cheap labour, or would they have come as quite a young child and stayed till they could be off on their own. Surely a 12 year old wouldn't be paying for her board, but rather working for it? Any enlightenment gratefully accepted. Thanks Heather Canada Polly Rubery wrote: > Hi David > > "Legal adoption" in this case meant a countrywide (England & Wales) > statutory basis for legalising adoptions, and giving an adopted child a new > birth certificate showing the adoptive, rather than the natural parent(s). > > Adoption per se was of course "legal" before, but it was always a private > process, sometimes just an informal one, or sometimes arranged with the > assistance of a solicitor who would draw up some form of legal document as > in Hilary's grandmother's case.
