    1. [HEF] Lady J BATEMAN?/WILLIAM SKINNER
    2. Hi Listers, I'm new to this list so here is my current brick wall. I am trying to establish the identity of a Lady J BATEMAN who in the 1851 census was at her address of 19, Marlborough Buildings, Bath in Somerset with her butler, WILLIAM SKINNER my 2X Great Uncle. Her age is given as 80 (place of birth not given) and his as 63 born Selworthy, Somerset. The 1841 census shows the address was in the possession of Lady BATEMAN but on the day of the census the house was only occupied by two servants. A check of Pigot's 1830 and 1842 Somerset Directories shows Lady BATEMAN and Hon Lady BATEMAN at 19, Marlboro' Buildings respectively, at no time is her first name used. An entry in the Bath Chronical dated 10.12.1840 states:- November 30 at Shobden Court, Herefordshire, the Right Hon Lady BATEMAN, a daughter. It is hardly likely that the Lady J BATEMAN I am trying to identify would be the mother of this little girl, but there is probably a connection somewhere. In an effort to trace the movements and possible descendents of my 2X Great Uncle I need to identify this elusive Lady J BATEMAN. Can anyone please help (1) to identify her; (2) if you have access to the 1841 census for Herefordshire please look up Shobdon Court . Thanks in anticipation, Fred Skinner.

    3. Hello Fred I'm afraid that in the 1841 Census Shobdon Court, Herefordshire, was (like your Bath address) occupied by just two man-servants - William TAYLOR, aged 30, and Richard WILLIAMS, aged 17. I couldn't see anything in the Census which might have given a clue as to who owned the property, but the BATEMAN family were certainly very influential in the area in the 18th and 19th centuries (the local pub is to this day called the Bateman Arms). Kellys 1934 Directory of Herefordshire mentions that when the ancient Shobdon church (built 1141) was pulled down down in 1752 Lord BATEMAN caused the three principal arches to be re-erected in the park, where they still remain. In the "new" church (erected 1753) there is a fine monument to John, last Viscount BATEMAN & Baron of Culmore, who died on 2 March 1802, and another to William (HANBURY), 1st Baron BATEMAN, who died 22 July 1845. The fact that a birth at Shobdon Court to a Lady BATEMAN was reported in the Bath Chronicle would suggest that there was a family link between the two places, but not being a native Herefordian I'm afraid I can't tell you what that might have been. No doubt someone on this list with a better knowledge of local history than I have will be able to point you in the right direction (if they haven't already done so).
