    1. [HEF] FreeCen: HEF 1871 - call for volunteers
    2. Stephen Karner
    3. Hi folks, I am writing to the list with an update about the FreeCen HEF 1871 census transcription project. The status of the project can always be viewed at: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~slkarner/FreeCen/ I wish to heartily thank all the new volunteers who responded to the recent call for help. We are progressing with the project, as you can see from the statistics: Start date: September 2001 (films on loan for 2 years) Number of Pieces to allocate: 50 Pieces out for transcription: 28 Number of Pieces transcribed: 2 (hence, these need checkers) We also have a volunteer starting up on one of the films that the HEF 1871 census was _not_ going to work on. This film contains 3 census Pieces. So, as a result of the recent call for help we picked up volunteers to work on 10 more Piece numbers. I am sorry to report that a volunteer signed on for three Piece numbers has withdrawn from the project for personal reasons. Otherwise our total number of allocated Pieces would have been well over 30!! I believe the volunteers that we have on board deserve a _huge_ round of applause for their efforts. Many people will benefit from their hard work. Remember...the aim of the FreeCen project is to bring the contents of the UK censuses to everyone via the internet - free for the user! However, as you can see from the above numbers we still have much work to be done for the HEF 1871 census (and for the other regional census projects). Would you consider volunteering for the project? Remember, transcription is only the first phase of the project work. We will also need Checkers once the Pieces have been transcribed. We will provide the software, the census microfilms, and troubleshooting support to all volunteers. If you have access to a microfilm/microfiche reader (or even a home scanner), a computer, and some spare time... you have all the 'tools' needed to volunteer. Your help will be appreciated by us, and ultimately by the masses!!
