I am sure some retired marine in this list is going to do a real job on this for you but.......RM stands for Royal Marines. They serve on board naval ships as well as on shore. Have military ranks and khaki uniforms. . You can assume he was a private in the Royal Marines serving on board HMS Victoria and Albert , berthed in Portsmouth. Check to make sure it was a real ship. Shore installations of the RN are often called HMS Something. Enquire at Royal Marines depot/ museum for how to see service records.
