    1. [HEF] 1861 lookup request: New Street, Ross

    3. Apologies for repeating a request from a few months ago, but I thought it might be worth a try... I'm STILL very stuck on a Frederick HAWKER, born c. 1833, who married Maria ROBINSON (b. Ross c. 1835) in Ross in 1854; they had two daughters, Sarah Elizabeth (b. 1855) and Eva Pamela. I've so far failed to find ANY further reference to Frederick other than his marriage cert and Sarah's birth cert, so I don't even know where he was born. But the family was living in New Street in 1855, so with a bit of luck they might also be there in 1861. Other relevant people who might turn up in the same place are William ROBINSON (b. c. 1810, also an elusive character) and Sarah ROBINSON / CLARKE (b. c. 1815); these were Maria's parents. This Sarah certainly lived in New Street from 1851 to at least 1901. It would be so wonderful to get a bit further with this family, so I'll keep my fingers tightly crossed that some kind person can help out with a lookup. Best wishes, Rebecca Davies Freiburg, Germany

    3. Hello Rebecca Stumbled across this whilst looking for something else in the Hereford RO :- 1861 Census Herefordshire New Street, Ross Thomas CLARK, head, widower, 45, tailor, b HEF Ross. Sarah ROBINSON, boarder, 47, laundress, b GLS North Nibley. Sarah E HAWKER, grand-daughter, 5, scholar, b HEF Ross. Eva P HAWKER, grand-daughter, 3, scholar, b HEF Ross. Interesting that in the on-line 1881 Census Sarah CLARK, aged 66, b GLS North Nibley, is described as the MOTHER, not the grand-mother, of the above Sarah HAWKER (by then married to Samuel NEWITT). Impossible to find any of the others you mention in the 1861 without a surname index, I'm afraid. The only HAWKER's in the 1851 Herefordshire Index are an 18 year-old girl living in Redmarley and a 52 year-old widow (Ann) living with her 18 year-old son (William) in Corse - both places actually in Gloucestershire, but not too many miles (about 10) from Ross. You would presumably get another reference to Frederick HAWKER (possibly giving his occupation + maybe an indication as whether or not he was deceased) if you were to secure young Sarah's marriage certificate. The GRO reference looks to be September 1874 quarter, Ross, vol 6a, page 861. Hope this helps a little.
