Hello All, Am trying to trace a Mary Ann GOODWIN, who may have been born in the Kington Workhouse in 1839 to Mary Ann GOODWIN, no father listed. Could find no trace of either in the Kington 1841 census. I do find a Mary Ann GOODWIN, aged 12, b. Kington, in the 1851 census for EYE, Luston. She is living as a lodger with the MORRIS family, farmers of 8 acres. She has no occupation listed. Also lodging with the MORRIS family is George PAYNE and his wife Mary both aged 30. Could any one tell me what the usual practice was, regarding children b. in workhouses and or orphans? Would it be likely that they would be put out to work and or lodging with families? I would have expected to see Mary Ann listed as a servant or scholar in this census. Perhaps the enumorator just missed that bit? Any thoughts or ideas greatly welcomed.
