    3. Hello all I am new to the Hereford list as most of my research has been in Glam and Mon, however I have just discovered, much to my amazement, from the 1901 census that my great grandfather James Powell was not from Mountain Ash as I had thought for the past year since I started on this infuriating pastime. He gives his birthplace as St Weonards, Herefordshire. I now have a few certificates of people that are nothing to do with me, as Colin Rogers says in his book (Family Tree Detective) - "Ancestors I used to have" Anyway - does anyone have any info on a James Powell born about 1862 at St Weonards - father Thomas Powell. The Ross Register Office have a birth cert available of someone fitting this description for 21 June 1861 but I want to be sure that it is him as all the other info I have (marriage cert, 1881 and 1901 census) seems to suggest 1862/3. Any help gratefully received especially a check for him and Thomas on the 1871 census in St Weonards (RG10/2688/01 and 02) as I do not have access to it in South Wales Diolch yn fawr/many thanks Terry ap Hywel Caerphilly Wales http://www.terry-ap-hywel.info/family/

    3. Hello Tery From look-ups in the Herefordshire Records Office :- 1871 Herefordshire Census RG10/2688 St Weonards, Priors Wood Cottages Thos POWELL, head, M, 50, farm labourer, HEF St Weonards Mary POWELL,wife, M, 48, farm labourer's wife, HEF St Weonards Mary A POWELL, daughter, U, 17, out of service, HEF St Weonards Geo. POWELL, son, 14, farm servant, HEF St Weonards Thos. POWELL, son, 12, scholar, HEF St Weonards Jas. POWELL, son, 8, HEF St Weonards Peter POWELL, son, 6, HEF St Weonards Fanny POWELL, daughter, 4, HEF St Weonards The Census seems to confirm James POWELL's birth as 1862/3 so you'd be well advised to ignore the certificate held by Ross for 21 June 1861. Found Thomas POWELL's baptism in the St Weonard's parish registers on 10 April 1859 (abode Plum Pudding!), but the baptism register ends in 1862 - just before your James appears on the scene. From previous experience I'd say that the register after 1862 is quite likely the one still in use at the church today.
