I have posted this before but thought it worth re-posting in the hope someone can help. William Bullock was born in Westbury On Severn and baptised there in February 1960. In 1885 he marries Maria Portlock in Barnwood. In 1861, 1871 and 1881 he is in WOS with his parents and siblings, I cannot find him in 1891 In 1901 he, Maria and their children, including my grandmother Beatrice (aged 11) are in Canon Frome, Herefordshire. In 1906 my grandmother marries in Worcestershire and the marriage states her father is dead. In 1913 Maria - now listed as a wido - marries William Walwyn in Bromyard. There is family talk that William Bullock committed suicide but I am unable to find a death. I would appreciate anyone's thoughts on the above. Thank you - June
Thanks Judy I was wondering if I was missing a sibling, as there are several Williams in each generation ... I even unknowingly called one of my children William. Right .. time to order the film in to my local LDS family history centre, I think. Hello Dave...........I too have a Caffull/caffelle connection in Tarrington. May I boldly ask what your connection is...........we might have a connection. My line started in Tarrington with a marriage in 1758 between a WILLIAM CUFFELL and ANN COLE who ultimately had 7 or 8 children ( my reference books are not with me). During the course of time there were family members in Mordiford, Woolhope, and Ashperton. I'd be interested in hearing from you to see if we might have a connection. Hello. I'm new to the list, & am hoping someone here may be able to help me. Most of my research so far has been in Gloucestershire, with the odd bit of Cornwall & Ireland (via Liverpool) thrown in. Herefordshire is a bit of a mystery to me, as I really don't know the area, so please bear with me. :-) My Gt Gt Gt Grandfather was James CASTON b1804ish (the family name was later changed to GASTON), who died at Berkeley in 1833, & so he doesn't appear in any census returns that give any useful information. However, also living in Berkeley, & very much involved in each others lives (attending each others weddings, & naming children after each other), are other CASTON/GASTONs. Namely, Solomon CASTON, Mary CASTON, & Joseph CASTON. My somewhat tenuous link is that I have found (on the LDS site) details of a family in Herefordshire with all these names. They are: William CASTON with wife Elizabeth MORGAN m.1794 @ Sellack, & children Edward bapt1796, John bapt1798, Solomon bapt1801, Mary bapt1803, James bapt1806 & Joseph bapt1808. The children were all baptised at Hentland. Of the CASTONs in Berkeley, Solomon had a son called Edward, James had two children, William & Elizabeth, & Joseph had too many to list, but among them were Elizabeth, William, James, Joseph, Edward & Mary. I guess none of them liked John, as they didn't name any children after him ;-) A William CASTON died at Berkeley in 1843 aged 78 .. this could be the father of the family. Census returns are not consistent, though I have found Solomon in the 1851, showing a place of birth as Hentland, Hereford. On the 1861 Census, Joseph is shown as being born in Herefordshire, but I can't make out the name of the place .. P..g.l.y. Any clues? Solomon's record just says 'Hereford'. I haven't found Mary in any census returns .. I assume she married, though I haven't found any record of that either (just a base born child called Jemima in 1823). SO .. my questions are .. 1. Does anyone have a link to this family? 2. Has anyone come across John or Edward, as they don't appear to have moved to Berkeley with their siblings? 3. Can anyone tell me where William CASTON snr came from? 4. Does anyone know of any other CASTONs in Herefordshire that I could look into for possible links? Thanks in advance. Hilary

I am a novice in this area, and am hoping someone on the list may have some knowlegde of military units in the Herefordshire. My question is this: What military units would men from around the Orleton/Richards Castle area have likely enlisted in around 1800?
I have got back to 1760's Where Esther Griffiths 1769married James Griffiths 1760 Esther is my family James came from Clodocke as well This is where my problems are I have decided to try and go back down another strand as I have come to halt. But each generation has a James and a William and usually daughters called Esther and Hannah. But of course each of these has sons and daughters of the same names so I end up with so many James and William I keep getting lost. My great Grandfather moved away to Glamorganshire and married away from the clan. I have Esther GRIFFITHS married to James GRIFFITHS Married 28 May 1790. Daughter Esther 1791 married Williams GRIFFITHS 1787 Michaelchurch Eskley on 25/09/1825 son James 1831 married Hannah LUTER 1835 Linda
Hi Kevin, "of this parish" seems to me to be one of those phrases specifically designed to frustrate researchers in following centuries (another being "of full age" on marriage certificates). 'otp' doesn't necessarily mean that the person was born in that parish, only that they'd lived there at least long enough for the banns to be read (about 4 weeks - first tell the vicar you want to marry, then wait for 3 consecutive Sundays while he calls the banns after service). John may have been born in Much Marcle and been legally settled in Hereford city - you could only be legally settled in one parish at a time. My 5xgreat grandparents were removed from their birth parish, Syresham, NTH, to Greatworth, NTH because the family had fallen on hard times and the husband had at some point gained legal settlement in G'worth, so Syresham wouldn't give them parish relief despite them being born, baptised and married there. Have you found your John being baptised in Much Marcle? If you have, it shortens the odds that the baby and the man of Hereford city are the same person. No definitive proof, though, just the balance of probabilities. Thanks to Robert Chick for the 1851 census details on parents of Japheth HUGHES, even if in north Wales. Guess I assumed too much to think his parents were deceased by that census. Ruth Ann
Hi Polly, Yes.....I know I have my work cut out. My Evans's were all Ag Labs so a will is out of the question. It was only when I looked at the parish register a second time I noticed the ref. to All Saint's (it was barely visible) When I get back to Hereford RO I'll check the church survey for 1828 again for ALL Evans's. I think I'm going to be left with an open mind and that's it I'm afraid......I'm glad they aren't in my tree with a question mark over them now. Thanks for the reply. Best regards, Kevin , Co Cork.
