Henry, Before "bussing" it seems children went to the nearest school (excepting those who went to "faith schools"), so your mother may have attended Lord Scudamore's Council School - a public elementary school (for "boys, girls and infants" according to Kelly' Directory 1931). http://www.lordscudamore.hereford.sch.uk/ In 1831 it was in Friars Street - only a couple of streets from Bridge Street. The Roman Catholic school was even nearer in Berrington Street. Regarding records - sorry not a clue! Regards, John ex St James' Infants St Owen's Primary Hereford High School for Boys.

Can any lister suggest which school in the city of Hereford my mother may have attended. She was born in 1913, and in her early years lived in Dean's Passage, Bridge Street, Hereford. I would also be grateful if anyone can advise if school records for this period are available for research. Henry Johnston

The standard published source is the series of books on Herefordshire Pubs published by the Logaston Press. For Hereford itself see Ron Shoesmith's 'The Pubs of Hereford City' first published in 1994, and revised in 1998 and 2004. Hi Tina Yes that's the one. I drove by that way myself today and found that it had been renamed. Now I live in Ledbury I don't often drive into Hereford that way, and if I do I am usually too busy looking where I am going. But having had some information as to exactly where it was, I was able to spot it. I will pass on all the information to my friend, who will be very grateful. I am sure she will be very pleased, but has gone into hospital for an eye operation so she may not be online for a while now. But when she is I am sure to find all this will cheer her up. Many thanks to all of you on her behalf Polly ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tina Morgan" <tina.morgan@dsl.pipex.com> To: <midmarch@rootsweb.com>; <eng-hereford@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, March 05, 2008 10:15 AM Subject: Re: [MM] Hop Pole Hotel, Hereford Is this it? Hi Polly/Sue The old Hop Pole Hotel in Commercial Road, Hereford, was renamed O'NEILLS some years ago, but is, I believe, esentially the same building. Hi All I have been sent this query privately: >>It appears that a HEDGES ran The Hop Pole Hotel in Hereford some time last century. Are you able to confirm from your knowledge of the area that there was such a Hotel in Hereford please?<< Not actually knowing the answer I checked on the Historical Directories website and found that the Hop Pole Inn was listed as being in Commercial Street, and it seemed to be one of the departure points for coaches and carriers. I don't think it still exists under that name, but can anyone assist me in locating it - is it still there but under a different name or has it been replaced completely? Thanks Polly Best wishes Sue

According to Phillimores, the registers for Knighton are held at the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth. .. but you could phone the Herefordshire Record Office to make sure - 01432 260750. Thanks Phil I'm particularly interested (on behalf of an American acquaintance planning a trip to the UK this summer) in the Knighton PR's. Is there an easy way of establishing whether or not there's microfilm copy of these in the Hereford RO? Hi List Helpful though it is, I find the information here :- http://www.powys.gov.uk/index.php?id=872&L=0 somewhat ambiguous in that it identifies microfilm copies of Radnorshire PR's held EITHER at the National Library of Wales OR the Herefordshire Record Office? Can anyone tell me, please, whether this signifies that a full set of all registers is held in both locations, or that some are held in Hereford and others in the NLW? I wonder if anyone is researching the ADAMS and Thomas family of Pencombe and Hope Under Dinmore. Alice Thomas of Pencombe married James Adams of Hope under Dinmore in Pencombe on Oct 22 1883. I can track them living in Hope under Dinmore in 1891 and Alice & their daughter Agnes in 1901 census. Alice bought Masons Cottage in Pencombe when the Arkwright estate was sold in 1911 and she might have returned to look after her parents Richard & Jane (nee Williams) Thomas. Agnes married William Arthur Colley in 1910 the son of the village blacksmith. Would love to hear from anyone tracking this family as I would love to know when Alice Adams moved from the village Many thanks Barbara Haner
