    1. [HEF] Maddocks and variants
    2. Philip Maddocks
    3. Hello I am involved with a project drawing together all variants of the name including Maddock Mattox, Maddox, Mattick etc. I am working my way through counties that had a substantial number of these names in the past. I am not here to poach members but to ask those researching these names to visit Katheryn Haddad's website on Yahoo/Rootsweb. It has a strong American bias at the moment but us Brits on the mailing list would like to redress the balance by getting others to take an interest. Most of the americans on the list are also interested in following their family trees across the atlantic. Don't be put off by the dna interest as it is not a requirement of joining and there is an enormous amount of research freely available on the site all collected by Katheryn. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/maddoxdna/ http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~maddoxetc/ Philip Maddocks

    1. [HEF] GREENLY family of Hereford
    2. David Matthews
    3. It's a long while since I've posted to the list but I've been reading all the traffic in the background for what must be the best part of ten years. I wonder if anyone has come across any baptism and marriage records for the GREENLY family in Hereford parishes pre-1700? I am trying to follow back a line from a John Greenly and his wife Ann Rawlinson. John and Ann were married at Hereford Cathedral in December 1746. They had 8 children between 1747 and 1767, all baptised at St, John Baptist. The first two were Edward and Mary. There is a baptism for a John GREENLY at St. Martins in August 1714. Initially, this struck me as a year or two early but the parents are Edward GREENLY and Mary. As those names were used for John's first children, I think that this is the John in question. John appears to be the first-born of at least 5 children so an approximate date for the birth of his father would be abt 1690. I have not yet located a baptism for Edward (nor his marriage to Mary) but I have found a baptism for a James GREENLY in 1692 to a Roger GREENLY and Ann, once again at St. Martins (the only pre 1700 record for any GREENLY in Hereford that I have found). The name Roger would suggest a connection back to Staunton on Arrow which is the only other location where this forename is found before the 1800s. However, Roger was not born there, nor married there. In that baptisms for this period on the IGI are a bit thin and none show up that help this particular puzzle, can anyone point me in the direction of another avenue of research? I am a very long way from Hereford and unable to get to the record office. Does the local FHS have these records available? Thanks in anticipation. David Matthews.

    1. [HEF] MADDOX of Dorstone and US Census entries
    2. Mandy Whitham
    3. Afternoon List I wonder if I could ask a cheeky question of sks? I have tracked a missing MADDOX to the US, I've seen the transcribed info from the 1880 census via Family Search and their Lab site has actually shown me the actual census entry - however, despite being able to save certain docs from this site, it is in a format unreadable by my machine. So my question is - would/could sks track them down for me on the censuses so that I could actually have a copy of the entry, rather than the transcription. The chap in question is Charles R Maddox whose birth date does appear to move around bit but is generally accepted to be 1853 in Dorstone, Hefs. Family tale is that several of the Maddox menfolk drove (in the good old fashioned usage of the term and not so much Eddie Stobbart, you understand) a herd of cattle to the US - all returning except for one man who settled there. And Charlie boy would seem to be the obvious option - well, he's the only one who is in the US :-) He arrived in the US around 1873 (he's definitely at home in Hefs on the 1871). I've not been able to find him on the Ellis Island site - all too late for my chap. He married Rachel E Gawler in c1879 (this is taken from the IGI so not confirmed) - her family originated in London, spent some time in Hefs, and then moved to the US around 1876. The family all lived in and around Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio and Charles' occupation was in the 'meat business' - probably a butcher going by what I've read so far. He died in 1917. What I'm hoping to find are any census entries that relate to Charles and Rachel - there were 5 children but one didn't survive. 2 sons never married, 2 daughters nothing else known. Also if there were any immigration/passenger details around the appropriate time frame (and possibly for other Maddox men around the same time). Sorry to be such a nuisance - but it is so frustrating to see the information but not actually being able to get a copy. And, of course, Ancestry has a few extra censuses that are so far not covered by FamilySearch Labs. Many thanks for any time and trouble. Mandy Whitham

    3. That is marvellous Jo. Knowing there is such a book, I tried the catalogue at our national library hoping they might have it. They have something similar for 1837, a bit late for me but worth a look, so I will try that tomorrow hoping it might tell me just where on the mail route between Hereford and Abergevenny the mail was deposited for individuals to collect, or where the coaches changed horses. I had quite a lot on Hereford coach and mail departures and arrivals, but for the hamlets and villages along the way it is much harder to find anything specific, especially from the other side of the world. 3. That is indeed a very interesting site, and had given me lots of general information about postal services in England, but finding specific information about small parishes like Kenderchurch and Ewyas Harold is always challenging. I wonder if there are any extant records for the post runners and later the coaches that carried the mail. Or for the places where post was deposited for individual collection (fore runners of our post offices). Maureen Robinson.
