    3. Hi David, Thank you the resource material on Old Style and New Style calendar keeping. I had forgotten about it and when the change took effect. Certainly going to keep this for reference. 3. Could be some connection there. I'll investigate further. And thank you for the reply. Really concentrating on the following areas: Gloucs., Heref., and eastern Wales. The name WATHEN is not uncommon in the arenas of my searching. I'm printing out all the info coming my way and the paper file folder is filling up rapidly. Love it. My direct ancestor, John, or John B., or John Barton WATHEN came from somewhere obviously. I'm attempting to nail that down and then trace the family back from there. For me, this is has as much to do with history as with genealogy. Thank goodness for the retirement years. The immigrant John landed in Maryland in 1670 as an indentured servant to a Hugh Thomas. John sailed from Bristol that same year. 3. Can anyone tell me if there is a full list of the Hereford Diocese wills available online? Or is it only available at the Herefordshire Records Office? Incidentally, some list members may be interested in the following message I posted to the Monmouthshire lists recently: [Some group members will recall that a some months ago the Family Records Centre advertised several batches of microfilms for disposal. I am pleased to announce that I put in a bid and was successful in obtaining two batches: Prerogative Court of Canterbury Wills, 1383-1858 (PROB 11) This comprises approximately 1883 reels of microfilm. Miscellaneous Foreign Returns of birth, marriage and death, 1831-1969 (RG 32) Foreign Registers and Returns of birth, marriage and death, 1627-1960 (RG 33) Miscellaneous Foreign marriage returns, 1826-1921 (RG 34) Miscellaneous Foreign death returns, 1830-1921 (RG 35) Registers and Returns of births, marriages and deaths in the Protectorates etc of Africa and Asia, 1895-1965 (RG 36) Indexes to Miscellaneous Foreign Returns of births, marriages and deaths (RG 43) This comprises approximately 110 reels of microfilm. I have deposited all the microfilms at the Gwent Record Office and the GRO has now informed me that they are now available for public use. Since these microfilms came from The National Archives, there are some restrictions on their use, chiefly a prohibition on digitisation. The GRO has full details. Despite my best efforts, there are a few gaps in the PCC Wills, which we are trying to fill. Many thanks to Tony Hopkins, Acting County Archivist and the GRO staff for their co-operation throughout this project and their efforts in making the microfilms available quickly. Also, special thanks to the two members of staff who drove all the way to Essex and back, to collect the microfilms! I am sure that these new resources will be of great benefit to all of us researching Family History in Gwent.] Thanks, Peter Williams ----- Original Message ----- From: "Stephen J. 1. [HEF] Hereford diocese wills
    2. Stephen J. Kelsey
    3. There does not exist a full list of the Hereford Diocese wills(even at the Hereford Record Office as far as I know). One way this would be accomplished would be from extraction of the act books which go from 1662 to 1858(FHL film nos, 91622 through 91628), which for Hereford Diocese are all indexed(some at the front and some at the back). The other way(since the wills are all registered)each register has an index as well--except for a brief period near 1800. The actual admons for this period do not seem to be available so extraction from the act books would include the listing of the admons which would be very useful I did prepare a listing of the pre-act book (before 1662)wills(FHL film numbers 91631 through 91677) which is probably about 90% complete. This exists as a stack of paper about 2 reams high which is typewritten or handwritten. This 90+% complete index was filmed by the LDS and is available on the FHL or on microfilm through the family history centers. It is a listing of the wills in the order they appear on the microfilm. They are somewhat arranged by surname but a couple of films have wills in no set order(neither date nor surname arrangement). Stephen J. 3. Hi Steve, Thank you very much for your interest in WATHEN. I know very little about a Thomas WATHEN, but there are reports that a Thos. WATHEN/WARTHEN, settled in what is now northern Virginia ca. 1634. If you would like more info on him I'll find what I can, just let me know. Also, and just as important, if not more so, is my lucky acquaintance with a wonderful lady in South Bend, Indiana, Carol Collins who has been researching the WATHEN name for years, long before the days of the I-net. Whatever info she has you can best take to the bank. I have not met Carol face to face, I hope to some day, but she and I have been corresponding via email for several years. Carol is a wonderful source of information, especially relating to the WATHENS who came to our shores. All for now. Best regards, Bill Wathen ----- Original Message ----- From: "Stephen J. 1. [HEF] Half a Million Parish Records Transcribed
    2. David Watkins
    3. Forest of Dean Parish Records Project Progress The Forest of Dean transcription project has now been running for just over two and a half years with a total of 500,000 records having been added to the database. The project currently covers 54 parishes in Gloucestershire, namely:- Abenhall, Alvington, Ashleworth, Awre, Beachley, Blaisdon, Blakeney, Bream, Bromsberrow, Bulley, Christchurch, Churcham, Cinderford St.Johns, Cinderford St.Stephens, Clearwell, Coleford, Corse, Drybrook, Dymock, English Bicknor, Flaxley, Hartpury, Hasfield, Hewelsfield, Huntley, Kempley, Lassington, Littledean, Longhope, Lydbrook, Lydney, Maisemore, Minsterworth, Mitcheldean, Newent, Newland, Newnham, Oxenhall, Parkend, Pauntley, Preston by Ledbury, Ruardean, Rudford, St. Briavels, Staunton, Staunton by Newent, Tainton, Tibberton, Tidenham, Tutshill, Upleadon, Viney Hill, Westbury & Woolaston. together with 15 Herefordshire border parishes, namely:- Aston Ingham, Bishopswood, Goodrich, Hope Mansell, Lea, Ledbury, Linton, Little Marcle, Much Marcle, Ross on Wye, Upton Bishop, Walford, Welsh Bicknor, Weston under Penyard & Whitchurch. 7 Monmouthshire border parishes, namely:- Chapel Hill, Chepstow, Dixton, Llandogo, Penalt, St. Arvans & Tintern. And 2 Worcestershire border parishes, namely: Longdon & Redmarley D'Abitot In addition to these Church of England records, all of the Gloucestershire Forest of Dean non conformist records are being added to the database, together with the non conformist records from the Herefordshire and Monmouthshire border areas. It is estimated that when the project is nearing completion in about 12 months time, the database will contain around 650,000 records. For Gloucestershire the filming of parish and non conformist registers is now complete, apart from the post-1812 registers of Ashleworth & Hasfield and 4 very early non-conformist registers, which are only available on microfilm. The only records remaining to be transcribed are 17 pre-1812 parish registers, and it is hoped that the majority of these will be added to the database before the end of September. For Monmouthshire we have been working closely with Mike John and have copied most of the available transcripts of border parishes from his website. We have discussed the possibility of adding Monmouth to the database, and I have agreed with Mike that we will help him transcribe these records as soon as they are available as digital imagery. Progress on the Herefordshire border parishes has been slower, with 28 Church of England and 9 non-conformist registers still to photograph. Hopefully we can complete the filming of these during the Autumn and complete the transcriptions by Spring 2009. When all the parish registers have been filmed we will start photographing the pre-1812 Bishops Transcripts starting in Gloucestershire. My plan is then to send out the parish registers, the BTs and the current transcripts to volunteers, so that they can be checked and updated with any additional information which is in the BTs but not the parish registers. I have been running a pilot project for Newland with one of our volunteers, this is proving to be very successful and has resulted in a number of additional entries along with numerous corrections to the original transcript. I am also planning to add some of the early 20th Century registers to the database and will be filming baptisms up to 1920, marriages up to 1940 and burials up to 1960. A quick count for Gloucestershire suggests this will add another 80 registers (i.e about 50,000 records). There are also 13 Gloucestershire registers which are still held in the churches, so I am hoping to find volunteers who will make contact with the Ministers and arrange to visit the churches to photograph these. The parishes concerned are Abenhall, Beachley, Bulley, Churcham, Corse, Flaxley, Maisemore, Minsterworth, Rudford & Tainton. It's good to hear that so many researchers are benefiting from the database, let's hope the transcribers will keep up the good work. 3. Hi Barbara Joseph JENKINS only claimed to be born in Colwall in the 1861 census, when he said that he was 35 (ie born circa 1825). In 1871 his birthplace is given as "Worcester", although this may mean the county rather than the city, as the same is given for his wife (who was born at Mathon, WOR), and he is said to be 44 years old. In 1881 he is said to be born at Much Cowarne, around 1824, and when he died in 1884 his age was given as 57. As he was so much older than his wife (who was born about 1839 it seems) it is possible that he had "lost" a few years too...:-) And interestingly their first child was born only two days after they got married! So you may have to look rather further afield both in terms of time and geography for his birth. Good luck! When he married Ann Mason on 10 March 1856 in Bishops Frome he gives his father as Thomas Jenkins and the census records give his birth place as Colwall. Colwall Parish registers have been transcribed and are online via Genuki with no success although plenty of children for a Thomas & Mary Jenkins. There is a record on the IGI for a Joseph Jenkins 1828 with the always questionable entry 'of Bishops Frome" Any help much appreciated and can share information of Joseph Jenkins's family after 1856. 2. Another extract from 'Cambrian' Newspaper, 22 Feb. 1817 WENDY DIED Last week, at his house in Berners Street, London, in the 60th year of his age, JOHN BARNEBY, Esq., of Brockhampton, Herefordshire. In recording departed worth it may be justly said that his death will be a great loss to his tenantry, dependants, workmen, and the poor in particular. In his dealings he was punctual, candid and just; an upright magistrate, a generous rewarder of merit, a sincere friend, a kind master, a loving brother, an affectionate husband, a tender father, and a truly good man.
