Would like to find any descendants of George Cresswell born 27 Jan 1856 Huddersfield, Yorkshire and died 19 Oct 1938 Hereford. He was High Sheriff about 1895. Believe he might have had a son Cyril. Thanks. Sandra.
If someone has access to the 1851 and/or 1861 census for Hereford, could you do a look-up for me? I'm looking for birth dates, full names, for Thomas HARDMAN and Elizabeth (HARDING) HARDMAN and any other information, such as address, occupation, etc. They would have at least one son, William Henry HARDMAN, b. 1841, and I'd like particulars of any other children or persons in the household at that time. Any assistance would be much appreciated. Adele Draginda Abbotsford, B.C. Canada
Hello again, Margaret Not much info in the Tretyre & Michaelchurch parish record of the Daniel POWELL/Elizabeth SEABORN marriage, I'm afraid. No father's names shown, but Daniel confirmed as "of this parish" (ie Tretire) and Elizabeth as "of the parish of St Weonards, spinster". Witnesses were Joseph MORGAN and Ann SEABORN. Found an Elizabeth, baptised 15 November 1812 in St Weonards, daughter of John & Ann SEABORNE, labourer. Also a John, baptised 5 April 1815, son of John & Ann SEABORNE of Priors Wood, labourer, and Anne, baptised 23 February 1818, daughter of John & Ann SEABORN, Little Priors Wood, labourer. In 1841 Census :- Priors Wood, St Weonards. John SEABORNE, age 60, Agricultural Labourer Ann .. age 60 John .. age 25 Elizabeth .. age 22 George .. age 3 Samuel MADDOX age 25 Mason's Lodge (Bit puzzling this. If the Elizabeth baptised 15 November 1812 is part of this family then her age should be 28 not 22. And where on earth did George, aged 3, appear from ?) Partridge Nest, St Weonards. William SEABORNE, age 33, Agricultural Labourer Ann .. age 35 Mary Ann .. age 12 Thomas .. age 9 William .. age 4 Elizabeth .. age 7 months John GWATKIN age 11 William .. age 8 Hope this helps. Dear Gordon, You are an absolute gem. Thank you so much. One other thing, did you happen to notice whether the directory or the census gave any indication as to the numeric positions of those families/businesses in Broad Street and Market Place? Hello Terry Littlebury's 1867 has an R & F HALFORD, general drapers, in Broad Street, Ross-on-Wye. Also (just to confuse things) a Richard HALFORD, boot & shoe maker in Market Place, Ross. Take your pick! The 1861 census has :- Ross Borough, Broad Street. Richard HALFORD (head) M. age 53. Shop-keeper. born Ross. Maria .. (daughr). aged 15 Fanny .. (daughr). aged 8 Richard .. (son). aged 12 (Not a widower, but no sign of wife). Your e-mail with marriage details didn't arrive until after I'd left this morning, but I've a feeling the parish registers for Ross weddings held in the Hereford Record Office stop around 1837 anyway - I'll check on my next visit. Hope this helps Gordon Evans ----- Original Message ----- From: "Terry Delaney" <portpubs@blueyonder.co.uk> To: <ENG-HEREFORD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, March 04, 2002 11:53 PM Subject: [HEF] 1861 census for Ross-on-Wye > Dear listers, > > Does anyone have access to the 1861 census for Ross-on-Wye, or a Trade > directory of that period. I have an Ann Seabourne born about 1836 who married William Woodyatt 26 May 1859 at Holmer. Their marriage data shows her to be the daughter to a Matthew Seabourne. Don't know whether this is of help or not. Hi John Had a look on FreeBMD and there is a Lavinia Swain listed as born in Leominster 1860. Have a look for yourself. Cheers Anne
Fellow listers, My grandmother in an 1881 Census entry in Wolverhampton claimed she was born in Yarpole, Hereford. She would have been born in 1861 and her name was Lavinia SWAIN. She died in 1956 and is buried in the Southern Cemetery, Chorlton-cum-Hardy in Manchester Is there anyone who recognizes the SWAIN family name for the Yarpole area or who may be able to claim her as one of theirs? My family aural history of the SWAIN family claim miners, growers of the miner's roses i.e.. "peonies", a gamekeeper and a link to Ross-on-Wye. Failing any claimed connection could a kind person ( I hate abbreviations) point me in the direction of where I might find Lavinia Swain's birth records? Thank you, John Favill jfavill@wi.rr.com WI, USA
I need to contact this genealogist. Could someone tell her or confirm email add. > Please. Thanks Bryan Phillips -----
Dear listers, Does anyone have access to the 1861 census for Ross-on-Wye, or a Trade directory of that period. I am searching for a shopkeeper named Halford, in Broad Street, probably a draper or shoemaker. He might also have shared the business with a John Weatherhead, who married Emily Halford in 1863. Regards, Terry Delaney Somerset

Hi List I am a new subscriber and not very knowledgeable about Hereford records and their availability yet. I don't know if the 1851 Ross Hereford Census is indexed but if it is could SKS have a look for the household of Richard Simmons aged 22 born Yatton Hereford, I know he is on it but that's all I know. Hello to All, There is an Emma BOTHAM of Birley buried at St Peters Old Brampton, Dbys - 1926. Please, if anyone with access to the 1881 or 1891 census for Birley would be kind enough to check for an Emma BOTHAM, it would solve one part of the mystery as one possible Emma was in Old Brampton at that time. Both were dressmakers. One was married. I can't understand the 'of Birley' as both were born in Cutthorpe, Old Brampton, Dbys, although the Emma I need appears to have deserted her husband and children. Freda New Zealand

Hello again I understand that in the late1800s the registrars visited new mothers in order to register their child's birth not vice versa as today. Does anyone know or have any ideas how the registrar would know where these 'new' births were in rural areas. Thanks Mal
