hi all would someone be kind enough to tell me where Tyrone England is and maybe a bit about it, I just learned that my relative is from there so would like to research him. thanks Lori
Hi All, I would like some opinions on this information. It comes from the IGI and Parish records transcribed by Sheila Marsh. There is also related information in Ancestral File but that is demonstrably wrong and appears to be manufactured from a death certificate in which the names appear in non chronologival order (but some ages are given!). The dates shown here are critical to my research. 1. James Jauncey married Mary Burlough 13 May 1815 Ledbury 2. Harriet Jauncey christened 21 Jan 1816 Ledbury 2. John Jauncey christened 6 Oct 1816 Colwall Green 2. Benjamin Jauncey christened 17 Feb 1819 Colwall (Names in records vary, including Johnsey, Jauncy, Burloe) I need to be sure these are the first two children of the marriage. It seems likely and is supported by other information, but there are other James Jauncey's around. With 8 months between marriage and first christening and less than 9 months between first and second christening this just doesn't seem possible. John Jauncey claimed to be 55 in Feb 1873. If he was born in 1817 this would be consistent and solve the puzzle, but this is an unlikey transcription error. I would appreciate an opinion from someone with more experience with these things. Best wishes, Rod Selden
I have traced part of my family back to Henry COURTEEN who married Sarah Hughes in Dixton, Monmouthshire in 1785, but have now hit a brick wall. There is a reference to COURTEEN in Monnington-on-Wye where a Richard COURTEEN was married in 1775 and his son, Richard was baptised in 1776. I can find no other references to the name in this part of England, but, since the surname is so uncommon, I feel there must be a connection. Has anyone out there come across the name elsewhere in Herefordshire so I can, perhaps, link my COURTEENs to others? Michael Williamson, Cambridge, UK.
I have an Evans family living in Humber and Bodenham. Edward and Elizabeth Evans, children Elizabeth b. 1801 Mary b. 1803 Charlotte b. 1805 Mary Married a Joseph Reynolds, gardener at Hampton Court , Hope under Dinmore. Leominster. Can anyone add to my Evans family ?????? cheers Rose
Hi, Has any member got a knowledge of Latin and could explain what the different endings to Latin Christian names mean. eg:- James ---- Jacobi, Jacobus, Jacobum Mary ---- Maria, Mariam Ann ---- Annae, Annam Thomas --- Thomae, Thomam etc etc Is there a Web site which covers Latin names and gives the English equivalent? Many thanks Gerry Rigby
I believe the different endings are used with christening data when it is a girl or boy i.e. Jacobus is used for the father when it is filius and Jacobi when it is filia but I am not certain. I would also be interested to know Steve Kelsey ----- Original Message ----- From: Gerry Rigby Sent: Monday, March 25, 2002 1:16 AM To: ENG-HEREFORD-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [HEF] Latin Names in Catholic Registers Hi, Has any member got a knowledge of Latin and could explain what the different endings to Latin Christian names mean. eg:- James ---- Jacobi, Jacobus, Jacobum Mary ---- Maria, Mariam Ann ---- Annae, Annam Thomas --- Thomae, Thomam etc etc Is there a Web site which covers Latin names and gives the English equivalent? If you are looking at this problem - LOUISA was born 1833 not 1831 - in other words she and LUCY weren't twins so the idea of matching initials to first names is out - not that that became popular until much later anyway. Sorry - typos should be banned! Apologies! Bob
Your Sunday Conundrum!! John LIPPETT bapt Ullingswick 1765 - family traced to Henry Lippet mar. 1684 Marden - moved to Pencombe - had son John LIPPETT 1789 who married 1821 with children born there John 1822, Mary Ann 1824, Ann 1826, Benjamin 1829, LUCY 1831, LOUISA 1831, James and William 1836, Eliza 1838, Edward 1842, Elizabeth 1845. All the early names except LUCY and LOUISA have family background. Now!! Buried Ullingswick 8 May 1826 LUSION LEPORTE aged 2 years. Thought initially this might be an illegitimate of a sister of John BUT an IGI search soon gave LUCIEN LA PORTE bapt 1 Jun 1823 St James Westminster, s of Dominique Laporte and Margaret (Compton) who married 19 May 1822 St Anne Soho with daughter MARY LOUISA bapt 25 Jul 1824 St James Westminster. Dominique was probably s of Gabriel and Ann Laporte but isn't on the IGI. The family were undoubtedly of Huguenot extraction. I have no doubt this is the poor little chap and one can well imagine the grief of the mother - 'He would have been 3 years old next week!' The questions are :- 1) How did a Huguenot family get to this very rural part of Herefordshire. 2) With such a similarity of surnames could there be an earlier connection - which would mean Huguenot origins I would think but prior to 1684. There were Lippetts around the area in the early 1600's though. 3) The naming of LUCY and LOUISA looks very suspicious to me in the circumstances. Both were uncommon (of the approx 5000 women still alive in 1881 born HEF between 1825 and 1835 only 27 and 21 were so named) and to find them both in the same family most unusual. A possible additional clue - John Lippett had a first wife Anne Pewtresse (died young) also a possible ancestor who married another Anne Pewtresse in the 1600s - strange name! Please put your thinking cap on and send any ideas or thoughts - ask for further info if you think it will help. Bob Rudd in Sunny Australia.

Just reposting my interests in the above name (and all it's variants): Thomas SARGENT married Sussana POWELL Feb 2, 1828 at Vowchurch, and had the following children: Elizabeth 1828, Harriett 1831, Eliza 1834, Caroline 1836 (my interest), and Fanny 1839 all born Peterchurch. By the 1851 census Sussana has died. The 1861 census for Peterchurch shows Thomas age 60, remarried to Mary ?; also living with them is Harriett, age 30, unmarried, and grandson Henry, age 11 months. In 1872 Caroline marries my great great grandfather in Rotherham, Yorkshire. She is shown as a spinster and is not on the Rotherham 1871 census. Was she still in Peterchurch? Any connections by marriage to any of the other girls? Does anyone have access to the 1871 census for Peterchurch to see if any of the family are still around? I've been unable to find Harriett and Henry in 1881. I do have all the details on Caroline living in Sunderland, Co. Durham in 1881, and can trace her to her death in 1901. Many thanks, Linda.

Hi everyone, Most of you know me, I always like to help people. This lady has contacted me and my records don't supply her with the records that she needs for her Dad. Could anyone out there help us with this one? I would really appreciate it. Dear Ms. Waring, In perusing the message boards for Waring I have seen your postings and your apparent expertise with this surname. I am the g-granddaughter of Charles Waring, an Episcopal Minister m. Roseanna Billington 6 September 1866 at St. Margaret in Leicester. Of this union were 13 children, 3 were female. I am told all 10 males were lost at sea as Mariners before marrying or having offspring. Of the three daughters only one had any offspring, my Grandmother Ethel b.29 June 1881 in Christchurch d. 18 November 1967 in Corvallis, OR. She married John Carlisle Jelowitz and had one son, Frederick Charles Jelowitz. My father, now nearing 80, would like to have some connection to his ancestry. The Jelowitz surname seems to have disappeared from any records. I would be most grateful should you be able to assist me in giving my father this information. Please contact me at: msstyck@yahoo.com or msstyck-neves@onlinemac.com Thanks again for your help. God Bless, Renee Waring
In my previous message for a lookup request for the 1851 Census, the message included the address for my website which includes my EVANS connections in the county. Apparently, some people have had trouble getting in. I would like to hear from other if they have had trouble getting into it, or if there have been no problems. The website address is http://cmahoney.orcon.net.nz/ Thanks
