    3. I have an ancestor born in New St Peters in 1845. Can SKS do a 1841 census look up and see if his parents were there - father Henry Cottle - mother Sarah Cottle (nee Powell). I have been unable to find anything about them not even their marriage. On my ancestors birth cert. it says father is a Wardsman. What is that. Is that a hospital wardsman? By 1846 he was a miner. The film is 1841 All Saints (part) H0107/433 St Martin (part) St John the Baptist St Nicholas St Peter and the LDS film is 288824. Many thanks. An anxious Aussie living in New Zealand - Beryl Curtis

    1. [HEF] New subscriber - ROOKE/SHORTEN
    2. Hello I've been subscribed to the Norfolk list for a while now, and I've recently found out that my 2xgreat grandmother was born in Ross, around 1849 (On the 1891 census she is shown as living in Gorleston, nr Gt Yarmouth, aged 42). According to her son's birth certificate (Ernest Henry SHORTEN, b 24 October 1879, Gorleston) her maiden name was Emily ROOKE. I'm wondering if anyone out there thinks there may be a connection between the family they're researching and mine, and also whether anyone has easy access to either the 1871/61/51 censuses for Ross and could check to see if Emily is on it anywhere. I haven't been to Ross for ages - fond memories of getting engaged while on holiday there in 1985! (and getting a puncture on nearby Symonds Yat!!) Many thanks and regards to all Sarah Brammall Gorleston, Norfolk

    1. [HEF] GOODWIN
    2. Heather & Dana Canevaro
    3. Hello All, Am trying to trace a Mary Ann GOODWIN, who may have been born in the Kington Workhouse in 1839 to Mary Ann GOODWIN, no father listed. Could find no trace of either in the Kington 1841 census. I do find a Mary Ann GOODWIN, aged 12, b. Kington, in the 1851 census for EYE, Luston. She is living as a lodger with the MORRIS family, farmers of 8 acres. She has no occupation listed. Also lodging with the MORRIS family is George PAYNE and his wife Mary both aged 30. Could any one tell me what the usual practice was, regarding children b. in workhouses and or orphans? Would it be likely that they would be put out to work and or lodging with families? I would have expected to see Mary Ann listed as a servant or scholar in this census. Perhaps the enumorator just missed that bit? Any thoughts or ideas greatly welcomed. Thank you Heather Canevaro http://skfamilyhistory.esmartbiz.com/index.htm http://www.geocities.com/heather51us/index.html?1012584828630 (Still building)

    1. [HEF] SEAL(E), John and Peter 1780's-1880's Eng/>HEF>Canada>Simcoe
    2. Mike & Barb
    3. Reposting interests for new listers! Hello listers ! I'm seeking ancestors & descendants of John SEAL, born ca 1786, who may be the second son named below. "Our" John immigrated to Canada & received land as a discharged private from the 10th Regiment of Foot in 1832 and was a Chelsea Pensioner from Heredfordshire, England, aka 'HEF'. John has been truly elusive. I suspect the below family of James & Margaret SEAL due to 1) the proximity to Dewchurch (Little) in HEF where military records indicate he is from and 2) that John's daughters were named Mary & Sarah in Canada. (I know, grasping at straws here!!) Looking for any trace of Peter SEAL(S/ES), born ca 1789, 'of England', who sold John SEAL's widow, Elizabeth some land in Medonte, Simcoe, Canada ca 1869.. Peter may have taken part in an immigration scheme such as the "Canada Company" circa 1832 . We have Peter's obituary & some Canadian land records & census records to indicate he may be connected to John of HEF, but is not found in military records to date. John or Peter may have connections to the following family: James SEAL m. Margaret HOLTOM/HOLTON in May 1789 in Hampton Bishop or Callow, HEF. . Children: 1) William SEAL chr. May 30, 1790 in Mordiford, HEF 2) John SEAL chr. Dec. 19, 1790 in Mordiford, HEF 3) Mary SEAL chr. Sept. 29, 1793 in Fownhope With Fawleye, HEF 4) Sarah SEAL chr. Aug. 14, 1796 in Fownhope With Fawleye, HEF. TIA Barb Spicer

    3. Would someone be able to supply a phonetic spelling for the pronounciation of Ewyas? I'm sure I have slaughtered this name every time I have tried to say it. Also, I'm guessing it is a Welsh name/word. Is there a specific meaning? Some of my Lacy ancestors lived in Ewyas Lacy. I have often wondered about the meaning. Thanks in advance. 1. [HEF] GRUBHAM - WYLES
    2. Margaret Fitzgerald
    3. I have two queries which I would appreciate any information about. 1. I gather you have a copy of 1851 Census for Hereford, I am wondering if there are any "WYLES" listed on it. 2. Does anyone have access to names at Hereford Town Hall of names of "Freemen of City of Hereford. When I was there in 197l I was shown a list of my grandmothers family name of GRUBHAM, which appeared several times, unfortunately it has been lost and I feel sure the names would help me in my search for ancestors. Thank you to anyone who may be able to help me. Margaret, Australia.

    1. [HEF] Herefords in Herefordshire!
    2. Hi all, New member to list. My ancestors carry the surname Hereford and come from Sufton Court in Hereford, Herefordshire. We believe our ancestor James Hereford who came to Virginia in the mid-1600's is the patriarch for all the Herefords in the United States. We know there are still Herefords at Sufton Court (not our direct family) and some of us (not me, unfortunately) went there last summer to visit... My question is: How I can find info for our U.S. Herefords from Hereford in the 1600's and before? Need recommendations! --on-line records from Hereford ? --places to write for info? --good books on the period? --genealogists willing to do deep research? --a volunteer? someone in Hereford willing to help find records? We have a U.S. Hereford reunion scheduled in June in Texas. I can't attend, darn it, but my parents will be there. My mom s maiden name was Hereford so I want to present her with anything I can find to take with her--it's a Mother's Day present! I host the Hereford (surname) list at Rootsweb and collect and share what I can thru that list and on the web (looking up "Hereford" mostly brings up cattle references!) I work hard at it from this end and have a lot of U.S. Hereford connections. I'm happy to share if anyone's interested...BUT I could really use some help from "home"! Can anyone offer suggestions? websites? books? assistance? Anything appreciated! thank you, Cyndi in Baltimore (MD)

    3. Up to now I had thought that all my husband's ancestors came from Surrey or Norfolk, but I have just found the baptisms of three STUDD brothers in Little Hereford between 1809 and 1814. Has anyone else on the list any knowledge of this family in Herefordshire, please? Of course they may not be in our side of the family at all. Regards to all, Pam Studd

    2. gordon evans
    3. Hello again Adrian Herewith (at last!) the answer to your original Marriage Look-up request, posted to the Hereford list on 27 November 2001 :- Little Birch Parish Church, Herefordshire. Marriage Register 15 September 1874. John CORDY aged 65, widower, grocer, resident Little Birch. Father's name John CORDY, gardener. to Ellen CROMPTON, aged 56, widow, resident Little Birch. Father's name James POWELL, labourer. (John signed, Ellen made mark). Witnesses :- William TRAHERN, Susan TRAHERN. Had another look for Samuel CORDY/CORDING. Not in the 1851 Census Index for Herefordshire, so either not in the county or (as I suggested in my last e-mail) in hospital "incognito". I'm not aware of a complete list of pre-1837 Herefordshire marriages held either in the Herefordshire Record Office or anywhere else. No doubt someone will correct me if I am wrong in this. Hope I've been of some help.
