    3. Hello Hazel Lots of MEEKS in the 1851 Herefordshire Census Index, too numerous to list. Believe it or not, there's an Aaron, a Benjamin, an Emanuel and a Noah - but no Moses! I don't know whether you were aware of this when you posted your look-up request, but a Moses and Sarah MEEK were witnesses at the wedding of James JENKINS and Ann TIPPINS at Hope Mansell church on 7 October 1823 - the subject of a separate posting by Wendy BELL from Nottingham, to which you yourself responded on 23rd April. 3. Hello Wendy Found the marriage in Hope Mansell parish records, but not much help, I'm afraid :- 7 October 1823 James JENKINS of the parish the hundred of St Briavels and Ann TIPPINS of the parish the hundred of St Briavels, by Banns. Both James & Ann signed, witnesses Moses MEEK and Sarah MEEK made mark. The wedding was probably just a couple of years too early for bride/groom's father's details to be shown. Sorry. 1. Re: [HEF] Little Hereford look-up equest
    2. gordon evans
    3. Hello Pam Found the three baptism entries in Little Hereford parish church records ok but no information which isn't on the IGI, other than (under William) father's profession Labourer and abode Upton. No sign of a wedding for parents James and Elizabeth in the Little Hereford parish marriage registers, I'm afraid. (All surnames spelt STUD, not STUDD, by the way). Hate to ask for a reciprocal seeing as I've been of such little help to you, but since you offered I wondered if you might have any suggestions as to how I could ascertain more information on a Hannah COCKRELL who married John EVANS in St Catherine's Church, Abercromby Square, Liverpool on 5th April 1858. As you will see from the following extract, she showed her birthplace as ESSEX in the 1881 Census but gave no clue as to where abouts in that county I should begin to look for her family. Her age (46) suggests that she would have been born in 1834/5, just a couple of years before the commencement of civil registration (drat!). The birthplace of off-spring indicates that the family moved down to Essex around 1861 before returning to Liverpool in about 1875. Does the Essex Records Office or FHS perhaps have indices to the 1861 or 1871 Censuses which might help trace them there and maybe give more detailed information? (The surname should of course read EVANS, not EAVANS, but might be under either). 1881 Census. 3. Hello Sarah The following is from look-ups in the Herefordshire Records Office ( I don't possess any bought-in software) :- There's only one Emily ROOKE in the 1851 Herefordshire Census Index. She's in Ross, sure enough, but the age doesn't quite fit in with the information you've given. Did you sight the 1891 Census entry yourself? Could her age perhaps have been 47 or 48 rather than 42? (Do you know what's shown in the 1881?). There's an entry in the Baptisms register for Ross parish church as follows :- 26 May 1844 Emily, daughter of William & Eliza RUCK, carpenter of Over-ross Street. There's also :- 23 March 1849 Mary Ann, daughter of William & Elizabeth ROOKE, carpenter of Over-ross Street. 1851 Herefordshire Census details as follows :- Over-ross Street, Ross. William ROOKE, head, M, 36, Carpenter, HEF Pencoyd Eliza ....do......, wife, M, 38, HEF Ross Wm .....do..jun'r, son,U, 13. 1. [HEF] James Dowding 1827 to 1857. Place/record of death?
    2. Elizabeth Darby
    3. I am looking for the death of James Dowding, born Brampton Abbott, Heref. in 1827, lived as a schoolmaster in Bromsash in 1851 census, and probably married a Mary McArthur or Arthur in Cheltenham in 1851 after the census date. He died 17 March 1857, but GRO have no Death certificate recorded. Has anyone access to Bromsash or Cheltenham Parish records, or perhaps come across him in Herefordshire whewre the rest of the family originated ? Or any suggestions as to where I might look? Wills are probably not of much use, as he may not have had any property of his own, and his wife returned to Scotland as a housekeeper. We know he had two children, Catherine b.circa 1852 and Robert circa 1853 - cannot find their births either. Should be grateful for any help/suggestions. Thanks. Elizabeth.

    1. [HEF] HEF: DAVIS/DAVIES Bosbury
    2. Sharpe, Bruce
    3. A question from a new subscriber in Virginia - I have recently traced my maternal ancestry back to the Parish of Bosbury. My ggrandfather, John DAVIS/DAVIES, son of Elizabeth DAVIS/DAVIES, was born in Bosbury and christened on 15 Nov 1826. The parish record for the christening cite Shin's Croft as Elizabeth's abode as a servant. Was there a residence or estate called "Shin's Croft" in that vicinity? Can anyone provide any specific info about Shin's Croft (location, owners, estate or farm, etc.)? A second Parish entry in the burial records lists Elizabeth DAVIS/DAVIES, age 26 of Shin's Croft, as being buried on 22 May 1830. Can anyone relate Elizabeth (1804-1830), my probable gggrandmother, to any of the DAVIS/DAVIES families residing in the area? I have counted seven families in the 1841 Census for Bosbury, Upleadon, and Catley Divisions. Thanks in advance for any info. Please contact me at sharpb@erols.com or bruce_sharpe@sra.com.

    2. Terry ap Hywel
    3. Hello all I am new to the Hereford list as most of my research has been in Glam and Mon, however I have just discovered, much to my amazement, from the 1901 census that my great grandfather James Powell was not from Mountain Ash as I had thought for the past year since I started on this infuriating pastime. He gives his birthplace as St Weonards, Herefordshire. I now have a few certificates of people that are nothing to do with me, as Colin Rogers says in his book (Family Tree Detective) - "Ancestors I used to have" Anyway - does anyone have any info on a James Powell born about 1862 at St Weonards - father Thomas Powell. The Ross Register Office have a birth cert available of someone fitting this description for 21 June 1861 but I want to be sure that it is him as all the other info I have (marriage cert, 1881 and 1901 census) seems to suggest 1862/3. Any help gratefully received especially a check for him and Thomas on the 1871 census in St Weonards (RG10/2688/01 and 02) as I do not have access to it in South Wales Diolch yn fawr/many thanks Terry ap Hywel Caerphilly Wales http://www.terry-ap-hywel.info/family/

    2. John Arrowsmith
    3. New to this 'hobby', I have bought the LDS Church's CD set of the 1881 Brit Census and Index. Looked forward to hours of happy browsing, lots of "Gosh, did you know?" and "Well I never" moments etc. The trouble is:- (i) the Viewer program seemed to install happily but refuses to run (error code 3633 from memory); (ii) the lds support-by-email service doesn't reply to emails ... well, OK, maybe they do, but they haven't replied to mine ... not even to acknowledge their receipt :))) Has anyone else had this problem? Was there a workaround ? Is there another program that I can use instead of the LDS Viewer ?? I wonder if there is anyone with easy access to the parish registers who would kindly check the entries to see if there is any additional information, please? In return I can offer look-ups in the Essex Record Office and the 1881 census should anyone require them. Many thanks, Pam.
