Hello My g g grandfather Thomas Howard married(?) a widow Jane Watkins in the early 1800s. I have always assumed that Watkins was her maiden name but am having second thoughts as she is proving difficult to trace. Is it likely that Watkins was, in fact, her first husbands name ? ( I dont think she was married to the first husband for long as there is no mention of children and she had seven with Thomas) I would appreciate your views on this. Many thanks Mal
Hi all I researching DAVIES and am looking for a James Davies (labourer on Ann's marriage certificate), possibly around the Titley area. His daughter Ann married Charles Browning in 1872 and it does not say father deceased on the certificate so I am presuming he was still alive at that time. Charles and Ann are on the 1881 census as living in Radnor but Ann was born in Titley. If anyone can help with earlier census details (ie 1871) I would be most grateful. Does anyone know where I can obtain burial details for the Titley area please? Many thanks Diane (Bath)
Dear Listers. The venue of the 'Edwards Annual Open Day' for this year has been moved from Tredegar, and will now be held at, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, on the 9th. of June 2002. It will be hosted by the members of the Edwards(Shrewsbury) Family History Group. It is a great day out. For further details drop me a line off list. Dorothy.
With the help of some great Hereforshire researchers, I have been able to confirm the marriage of Susan Passey to Edward Colton on 12 April 1836. I also have the record for the Birth of their son, Edward, on 11 February 1840. The marriage and the birth of Edward took place in Little Hereford. I am now wondering if there were other children born to Edward and Susan - in the period 1836 to, say, 1850. Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I might research this? I don't think there is much to see on the Census, but I could be wrong! Thanks Jan - in Winnipeg, Canada - where we are under a storm warning for several inches of snow!! My poor little bulbs are struggling to come up - wish us luck!
would anyone be able to tell me what these census abbreviations mean? bo - ???? ci - ???? nc - ???? si - ???? look forward to your replies!!! Mair

Hi there Listers, I am a newcomer to the list and would like to post my interests. Prior to this posting I searched the Hereford List archives and made contact with David Porter who has been very helpful in seeking out some of the following. I have James Robertson Porter marrying 21 September 1895 Mary Beatrice Stooke at All Saints church in Hereford. On their marriage certificate he is described as a civil engineer aged 31 of Newport, Monmouth, and his 27 year old bride, from Aylestone Hill, Hereford was the daughter of Edwin Stooke, Estate Agent, and his wife Frances Mary Stooke, (née Hellyar). Edwin had married Mary 17 January 1866 at St Merryn, Cornwall, and Mary Beatrice Stooke was born the following year (date unknown) in Hereford, where the family seems to have lived from then on. The 1881 Census lists the family at The Cedars, Ailstone Hill in Hereford. According to the Hereford Monumental Index Mary died in 1943, aged 76, and was buried in Hereford Cemetery, Section 1. This is all I know about this family and would love to hear from anyone who can help with any further information. Regards, Marcus Langdon, Australia mlangdon@ozemail.com.au

Many thanks Linda for taking the trouble to look these up in the census. As you say a start, and considering the size of the village a few good possibilites! Hi everyone I am new to your list. I am looking for information on a marriage for William ANTHONY and Esther HANDLEY. married Jun Quarter 1870 in LEDBURY. Going by the 1881 census they were living in Newport, Monmouth. So checking out the parish registers there was no marriage for them. So looking up the Free BMD I came across the marriage but I am not sure if it is them. Would some wonderful person be able to have a look in the parish records for me. As I'm in Australia and if it is the same people I then can order the marriage certificate if I need it.

Hi everyone: Still looking for any descendants of Thomas and Susanna SARGENT, children Elizabeth 1828, Harriet 1831, Eliza 1834, Caroline 1836 and Fanny 1839, all baptised in Peterchurch. I have them in the 1851 census, and Susanna has died. The 1861 census shows Thomas age 60, new wife Mary age 47, daughter Harriett age 30 and grandson Henry age 11mths, but none of the others. Caroline was my great great grandfathers second wife, but she didn't marry him until 1872 in Yorkshire, and she was a spinster. Any connections to any of the other girls? Linda.
Hello Tery From look-ups in the Herefordshire Records Office :- 1871 Herefordshire Census RG10/2688 St Weonards, Priors Wood Cottages Thos POWELL, head, M, 50, farm labourer, HEF St Weonards Mary POWELL,wife, M, 48, farm labourer's wife, HEF St Weonards Mary A POWELL, daughter, U, 17, out of service, HEF St Weonards Geo. POWELL, son, 14, farm servant, HEF St Weonards Thos. POWELL, son, 12, scholar, HEF St Weonards Jas. POWELL, son, 8, HEF St Weonards Peter POWELL, son, 6, HEF St Weonards Fanny POWELL, daughter, 4, HEF St Weonards The Census seems to confirm James POWELL's birth as 1862/3 so you'd be well advised to ignore the certificate held by Ross for 21 June 1861. Found Thomas POWELL's baptism in the St Weonard's parish registers on 10 April 1859 (abode Plum Pudding!), but the baptism register ends in 1862 - just before your James appears on the scene. From previous experience I'd say that the register after 1862 is quite likely the one still in use at the church today.
