    1. [HEF] HIGGINS born HUNTLY
    2. Irene Coutts
    3. I would like to introduce myself as I am new this list. I have known for some years now that my great-grandfather was born in HEF. Until I found him on the 1861 Census of GLS I did not know where in HEF. That census stated his parish of birth was: Hereford - Huntly I have been unable to find such a place in my Road Atlas, Phillimores Atlas or internet and was wondering if in fact it was the Huntley that is in Gloucestershire now. Did the boundaries change during the 1800's or 1900's ? Perhaps someone can enlighten me. A little more about him is that his name is Thomas HIGGINS and his father was a William HIGGINS He was born somewhere between about 1825 and 1837 I think. Every entry I find of him on the 1861, 1871 and 1881 Censuses and his Marriage Certificate (second marriage) shows a different age. I have not located him since the 1881 Census when he was in Little Dean in GLS with his 2nd wife and family. My next step will be to look at the Parish Registers covering Whitecroft in GLS because he appears to have had a son, James, born there about 1859, probably to his first wife. Hope someone can put me right about where Huntly is. Thanks, Irene in Melbourne, Australia _________________________________________________________________ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx

    3. Hi! Listers, I am looking for information about the parents of my great-grandfather, Mark ROBERTS, born in Clehonger, Herefordshire on 12 Mar 1860. His mother was Elizabeth BEREGOYNE (spelling?). His father is not listed on his birth certificate, so I assume Mark was illegitimate (or an orphan?) but that his father’s surname was ROBERTS. I would really appreciate it if someone could look this name up and if a possible one is found could you tell me how to go about obtaining expanded info from the census? Thank you so much. Gladys

    1. [HEF] Sylvia Preece - Mordiford - Thanks and Help!
    2. Ian Preece
    3. Many thanks to listers who helped with tracking down part of Sylvia's family in my message last week. I have still not found Sylvia in 1881, and she does not appear in the death or marriage registers prior to 1881. She was born 1860, and so I suspect she may well be away from home by then (although her sister Elizabeth born in 1856 is also elusive). (Parents were Henry and Sarah) Any suggestions gratefully received. Ian Preece

    1. [HEF] HACKLEY
    2. James Evans
    3. Dear List, Does anyone know ANYTHING about the surname HACKLEY. My Hackley ancestors are proving frustratingly elusive and was just wondering whether anyone else had even heard of it. My ancestor William Hackley lived in Wellington but in the 1871 census he gives his place of birth as Mordiford and an age of 70 making him 10 years older than all previous evidence suggests. The IGI seems to cover Mordiford baptisms completely but his does not appear. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Best wishes James Phillips-Evans

    3. Hello all I am very stuck at the moment and hope someone will be able to help me. My gggrandmother, Jane, was a young widow when she married (?) Thomas Howard of Peterchurch in the late 1820s.Their first son was born 1829. On the birth cert of their son her name was written as 'formerly Watkins'. I assume this to be her first husband's surname, not her maiden name, so I need to identify him to discover her maiden name. Jane was born c.1802/3 in Radnorshire. I have gone through all the Watkins burials indexed and have a few possible candidates. I was wondering if anyone knows any of them and could tell me who they married and so help me to whittle the number down a bit. 1. [HEF] 1851 census and Stoke Lacy
    2. Frank and Val Froese
    3. Hi, I'm new to this list and researching the PEARSON family in Herefordshire, originally from Yorkshire. My Great, Great Grandfather JAMES PEARSON died in Stoke Lacy on June 25, 1851 leaving a widow named CATHERINE living at Hall Place and who was still alive in 1861. In James' will, he named three sons, William, John and James and daughter Hannah Davies. When looking for Pearsons on the Stoke Lacy 1851 census I found William and John but at the time didn't know about HANNAH DAVIES, married to JOHN DAVIES. If SKS has the Stoke Lacy 1851 census could they look up the Davies family for me and give the family configuation. I would particularly like to know where Hannah and John were born. In 1851, son James Pearson was living in Avenbury with his family. He is my Great Grandfather in case anybody out there is connected. Thanks for reading this and hope somebody can help me. 1. [HEF] correction to 1943 plane in Orcop
    2. Michael and Vicky
    3. >>Dear Denise, I got some more info from my Mother about the German plane crash. I had some errors in my first story as the farmers took him to Bagy Lydiard Pub which the MEADMORE family ran at that time. There were other plane crashes, but usually the pilot parachuted out, but this one was unusual in that the pilot survived a crash. So here is more to the story.: The Plane crashed not on Garway Hill itself, but very close to it, in a field at the back of a farm called Middle Barns. The elderly farmers got together in a group with pitchforks to investigate the crash scene and when they got there they saw a very young German Pilot (only 16 or 17 yrs old )and they apparently felt a lot of pity for this young man and used a gate or a door to carry him to the Meadmore's Pub. He had serious neck or back injury and was taken to Hereford Hospital for surgery and he recovered, but was crippled in some way. His parents were very wealthy Germans so about two or three years after the war the parents came back to the plane crash area and wanted to know what they could do for the local community as a thank you and Mum thinks they paid for a school hall or a scholarship of some kind, but she can't remember which. I made an error with the seat being used from this plane to make something I got my family stories mixed up .Nothing much was left after the crash...might have burned . The seat was from Guerin's ( have I spelt that name right?)plane which was pulled apart by my Uncle Max DAVIES and my Dad who was a Sadler made a bag out of it. Poor Max was killed bringing back Singapore Prisoners just after the war ended. It just showed me how easy it is to get family stories mixed up . from Vicky HARDING NZ > I wonder if you are referring to an enemy plane crash landing in > Orcop area of Hereford.? >My mother remembers the story of that crash as her family were involved in >helping save the German pilot. >The story goes something like this: >After the plane crashed the farmers came around the plane and rescued the >pilot and took him to Pontrilas where he was kept till he could be taken >away.Must have caused quite a commotion , I have visions of the TV >programme "Dad's Army" in my head when I think about this story.
