    1. [HEF] 1891 Hef look up - Browne
    2. Angela Jones
    3. Has anyone got access to the 1891 Herefordshire census please? If possible could I have a look up for a Mary Browne who was a school mistress? She may have been living at Mansel Lacy but I'm not sure. Also in the family could be William (husband) and children Lionel, Leonard and Leonora. I am trying to establish where she was in 1891 and where she was born. Many many thanks Angela _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp.

    1. [HEF] Brick Wall. Rosanna ? born in Eastnor 1806/7
    2. Hi. My gg.grandmother appears in the various census as Rosanna Lissiman or Rose H. Lissamore. I have never been able to trace a marriage and her children were not baptised so i have no way of getting a husband's name (if there was one). The constant is the christian name of Rosanna or Rose Hannah, and the fact she was born in Eastnor about 1806. One possibility is that she was originally Rosannah Sumner and married a Joseph Lissiman in Castlemorten in 1826. Does anyone have access to the Eastnor Baptisms for that period and could do a look up to see what Rosannah's were born between 1805 and 1807? Or any other suggestions. I would be most grateful for any help or suggestions. Pauline Lancs

One of them married a Lydia TREVITT but I can find nothing out about her and her family name. Thanks. Best wishes James Phillips-Evans

    3. Many thanks for replies re. above especially Stephen Kelsey and Polly Rubery. Have digested what you have both had to say, and am still not sure where we are. Neither Richard BULL nor Emma HODGES (certainly not Emma) were converted Mormons to my knowledge and definitely never left Much Cowarne, although Emma's Brewer relatives had long since left for America to become some of the LDS foiunding fathers. The marriage certificate reads as follows:- Marriage solemnised by licence in the Parish of Ocle Pychard 16 May 1843. Married in the Parish Curch according tot he rites and ceremonies of the (established church - deleted) United Church of England & Ireland by me JAMES ROE (officiating minister). Look forward to hearing further from Stephen, Polly or anyone who can throw further light on this. TIA JOHN RICHARDSON Tarrington >>>>NZ.

    3. Hi, I've subscribed to pursue information on my BEVAN/BURFORD line, which is associated with Orcop parish. My ancestor, James BEVAN, was born 19 Oct 1821 in King's Caple. His parents were John BEVAN & Ann BURFORD (not sure of the spelling, shows variously in Ancestral File, IGI, & family records). An allied surname is that of PRICHARD. If anyone has a connection, or access to records for King's Caple, Garway Hill, or Orcop, I'd love to hear from you. 1. [HEF] WHERE IS HUNTLY
    2. Irene Coutts
    3. Posting my request again just in case someone may have missed it the first time. The 1861 Census, my Thomas HIGGINS' place born is Hereford - Huntly Can someone please suggest where this might be. I have looked in Phillimores Atlas and there are no parishes by the name of Huntly in Herefordshire. There are several parishes such as St. ----- in Hereford but not Huntly. My road atlas doesn't show a Huntly in Herefordshire either. Internet sites only give Huntly in Scotland. In the first half of the 1800's would the Huntley that is in GLS have been within the boundaries of Herefordshire? Hoping someone can throw some light of this so I can order in the parish records in order to find out more about my great-grandfather. 3. Hi Stephen The United Brethern only had one chapel - the one at Gadfield Elm, so I don't think this marriage could have been anything to do with them. And by the date mentioned (1843) the group no longer existed - they had all converted to Mormonism, except a very few, and many had already left for America, including my John ROWBERRY Family from Bosbury. It would be interesting to know if any marriages were ever celebrated at Gadfield Elm though! Does anyone know? 1. [HEF] Pencombe Court & Hackley nr Bromyard - OOPS!
    2. Please forgive the brain short-circuit regarding the dates for William IV in earlier message. I meant to say Henry IV which of course is not remotely the same and is also probably just as daft as he didn't reign until 20 years after the record in question. Perhaps listers would be kind enough to ignore that part of the message! :-} David Matthews

    2. Dear Listers, I have found a reference to the GREENLY family in the papers of the Hampton Court Estate dating from 14thC ( the earliest mention so far found of the family) in the A2A archives site as follows: "FILE - Pencombe Court - ref. A63/I/1/20 - date: 1379-1382 |_ [from Scope and Content] 20s for heriot to the lord because Hugh Grenelye (common old spelling of GREENLY) demises his land at Nether Hakeleye (now Hackley, SW of Bromyard) present Thomas de churcheord for default 4d and Richard Lewys 4d" As I live in Yorkshire, it may be some time before I get the chance to look at the file which is at the HRO. I know this is an incomplete description but could any listers speculate as to its meaning/implications? For instance, what is the meaning of 'heriot' in this context? Also, does anyone know anything of Pencombe Court and its history as this is the first time it has cropped up? I read somewhere a long time ago that the GREENLYS were granted lands by William IV and the dates above are just right so this could prove to be the source of the family's subsequent wealth. The GREENLYS I have been researching are to be found in Titley and Staunton on Arrow from about 1500 before spreading out in the 18th and 19th centuries but until now, we had nothing before 1500. Any ideas/information would be greatly appreciated. TIA David Matthews

    2. Polly Rubery
    3. Hi John >>Can anyone give me any information on the United Church of England and Ireland ? Presumably nonconformist ?<< The marriage certificate itself should indicate whether Non-Conformist and if so also the sect. At the top of the form it will have where the marriage took place something along the lines of "in the xxxx chapel in the district of xxxxx". Note that the "District" is that of the Registration District or Sub-district where the marriage took place and is NOT always therefore the actual place. The name of the chapel should make this clear (although not always I'm afraid!) Then under the entry there will be two things of relevence. In 1843 few NC chapels were "authorised places" in the terms of the Marriage Act, and so the "legal" marriage was actually a civil one, conducted by the Registrar of the District, and so there will be the signature of the "officiating minister" *plus* that of a registrar, who actually attended the chapel and confirmed the marriage as legal, whilst entering the details in his *own* register, which he took with him to the wedding. It will also say something along the lines of "according to the rites and ceremonies of the Independants/Methodists/Baptists/etc by Certificate/Licence" This will indicate the sect and also whether the marriage was by Registrar's Certificate (the equivalent of calling Banns in a parish church) or by Licence granted by the Registrar. If the heading merely says "in the parish of" and the marriage was conducted "according to the rites of the established church after banns/by licence" and there is only one signature (that of the officating minister) then you are dealing with the Church of England, and it may be that the "Church of England and Ireland" was just being used as a "fancy" name for the established church, which at that time of course would also have been the established church in Ireland. 3. In this area and particularly in this time period there was a group in this area called "United Brethren" many of whom were converted to the Mormon Church. It is possible this is that sect. The chief minister of the group was Thomas Kington but the group consisted of more than 200 and had many different ministers of small groups. My relations who were converted to Mormonism in 1840 included John Benbow and his wife, Jane Homes, as well as their neices and nephews, Mary Ann Homes, Robert Homes and his wife Elizabeth Cole, Thomas Benbow, Sarah Homes who resided at Castle Frome and Tarrington. A man named Wilford Woodruff who later became president of the LDS church was the first missionary in this area and was responsible for converting nearly the entire congregation of "United Brethren." Most of them were baptized in a pool on the Hill Farm at Castle Frome which was then in the tenancy of John Benbow through his marriage to Jane Homes(who was a niece of Jane Homes and Richard Gardiner who owned the Hill Farm.)
