    1. [HEF] Missing Fownhopians - the details
    2. Brian Gange
    3. To add to my earlier posting: it would perhaps be more helpful if I listed the names of the missing rather than leaving you wondering whether to ask. These are all names that ought to appear on IGI batch number C016553 between 1813 and 1828 – the period I’ve so far managed to cover. I am grateful to Polly Ruberry for telling me something I didn’t know, namely that that batch was made up from the BTs rather than from the parish registers. A careless clerk’s hands might be at work here … but why so many JONESes and POWELLs? Anyway here are the names and baptismal dates of the missing ones. I have the parents’ details if anyone wants them. JONES: Joseph 6 Apr 1813, Mary 5 May 1816, William 6 Jan 1817, Ann 7 Apr 1817, William 27 Apr 1817, Thomas 6 Jan 1819, Timothy 13 May 1819, Sarah 18 Jun 1820, Elizabeth 8 Oct 1820, George 18 Jan 1822, William 3 Nov 1822, Charlotte 6 Jan 1823, Francis 16 Mar 1823, John Charles 25 Sep 1823, George 27 Jun 1824, Elizabeth 29 Sep 1824, James 21 Nov 1824, Charles 6 Dec 1825, Phoebe 16 Sep 1826, William Edward 18 Oct 1826, Maria 2 Jan 1827, Thomas 28 Jan 1827, Samuel 20 May 1827, Susanna 6 Aug 1827, Richard 20 Sep 1827, and finally Eliza 3 Apr 1827 POWELL: John 11 Mar 1813, Robert 9 Apr 1813, William 23 Jul 1815, Robert 9 Apr 1815, William 23 Jul 1815, Sara Llewellin 6 Oct 1815, Henry 7 Apr 1817, Rebecca 1 Feb 1818, Lydia 12 Sep 1819, William 10 Sep 1819, Henry Edward 29 Sep 1822, and finally Matilda and Frederick both on 21 Feb 1825 GOODMAN (every single one missing): James 2 May 1813, Elizabeth 26 May 1813, John Carver 2 Jul 1815, Francis 27 Mar 1817, and Ann 31 Aug 1818 (just two sets of parents there) The others I’ve noted are the odd one or two along the way. I think I recorded them all on a separate pad as I went along but could only be sure by checking my computer record against my IGI print-out and that would be a pain, I’m afraid: Maria APPERLEY 30 Nov 1817, Richard BAYLEY 24 Jul 1814, William BROWN 19 Jan 1817, Elizabeth BROWN 21 Oct 1819, Richard BRYAN 10 Aug 1814, William BRYAN 24 Mar 1816, Mary Ann CARVER 28 Sep 1817, Elizabeth DALLEY 25 Jul 1819, and Mary Anne LINK 26 Oct 1823. There’s a fair sprinkling of JONESes and POWELLs later in this particular IGI batch. I’ll let you know whether the later years’ list is complete when I get round to that part of the registers. (That might take a little time: it’s hard work!) I hope this helps someone. Brian Gange -------------------- bgange@netcomuk.co.uk In Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire

    3. Hello Brian I remember your help when I was hunting for lost ancestors. I don't know if you are missing an IGI Batch, but IGI Batch # C016553 contains many baptisms of Jones and Powell children, from 1819 to 1881. I could not find Goodman names, however! I haven't yet checked IGI Batch # M016553 - but will check it later and see if it contains marriages of those names too. 1. [HEF] Meredith of Brilley
    2. James Evans
    3. Dear list, My ancestress Margaret Meredith was baptised in 1822 in Brilley parish church along with her sister Sophia. Their parents were James and Mary Meredith. Was this the same James and Mary Meredith as those married in Clifford parish church in 1817? Is anyone else researching this family? Best wishes James Phillips-Evans

    1. [HEF] Fownhope - an IGI curiosity re JONES, POWELL and GOODMAN
    2. Brian Gange
    3. I'm examining the local history of Fownhope in the 1840s and 1850s. As part of this work I'm in the process of transcribing the Fownhope parish baptism registers. To save myself an awful lot of typing at the record office I downloaded from the IGI what amounts to a complete and reasonably accurate indication of the register entries and in the comfort of home put them into an Excel spreadsheet so that all I have to type in from the registers is the parents name and abode and the occupation of the father. So far I've transcribed the baptismal registers from 1813 to 1828. A curiosity is that virtually every entry for the name JONES and most entries for the names POWELL and GOODMAN appear to be missing from the IGI record. It's almost as if someone has taken a deliberate policy decision that these names aren't worth recording. Can anyone suggest why this should be so? More importantly, if anyone is forced to rely on the IGI in the first instance and appears to have lost from Fownhope a JONES, a POWELL, a GOODMAN or also a LINK or a BRYAN, names which sometimes seem to suffer the same fate then e-mail me and I'll see if I can help. (I already have a complete transcript of the 1843 tithe apportionment, the 1841 Fownhope census entries and am about a third through the 1851 census for the village.) 1. [HEF] HIGGINS
    2. Irene Coutts
    3. Does anyone have any 1851 Census listings for HEF. I am looking for the following HIGGINS family. William HIGGINS and his son Thomas aged between 14 & 25 (different age on each of the 1861, 1871 & 1881 Censuses). Thomas HIGGINS had a son James born about 1859. I have found a James HIGGINS born Ross, 1860, on the FreeBMD. I don't know if this is "my" James as according to the 1861 Census he was born in Whitecroft in the Forest of Dean. Does anyone on the list have connections to any of the above. 1. [HEF] BEAMAN - 1861 census
    2. Hi listers I'm new to the list, and am searching for the whereabouts of my great great grandfather and possibly 3 of his children, they could be living together. Father - WILLIAM BEAMAN Daughters - CECILY, ELIZABETH and LUCY. Son - JAMES. In 1851 they were living in Sedgley, Staffordshire, after much searching, confusingly I found William and Cecily living in Llandenny (Monmouthshire) in 1871 with his daughter Cecily, he was listed as a coal merchant (which is correct) but he was named as Joseph W Brown, all other details were correct. The trade directories of around that time named the merchant as Brown also. But, William Beaman died in Llandenny in 1875 and his grave and headstone still remain in the churchyard today - all a bit mysterious!! I have searched the 1861 census for Llandenny but it appears as they did not live there then. I feel they were living perhaps near or around Hereford. If any kind sole out there has extracts of 1861 for these areas, could they help? Or if anyone knows of a reasonably priced researcher they could recommend could they let me know? Peter Beaman, Plymouth.
