    1. [HEF] pronunciation
    2. Ian
    3. Dear Listers In a recent English e-newsletter was a list of "old English" surnames with corresponding pronunciations. One example caught my eye: It was stated - BEAWORTHY should be pronounced BOWRY with emphasis on the BOW. Can someone familiar with pronunciation confirm this? And in what period could this name have appeared in England? Many thanks Ian patch@nobbys.net.au

    1. [HEF] Browne-Mansel Lacy 1901
    2. Angela Jones
    3. Hi List Does anyone have access to the 1901 census for Mansel Lacy? I am trying to find details of the Browne family - I think that their details may be - head William Smith Browne(if he is still alive), wife Mary Browne (teacher at Mansel Lacy school) and children Lionel, Leonard and Leonora - hopefully. I am particularly interested in Mary's parish of birth if it is given. I would be so grateful if anyone has this info. Many thanks Angie _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com

    1. [HEF] Is anyone researching the Merrick family?
    2. Nicola Meyrick
    3. If anyone is doing or has done research on the Merrick/Meyrick families of Herefordshire, I'd be delighted to share information. My great-grandfather Arnold Garbett Merrick (baptised Kingstone, 1804) changed the spelling of his name to Meyrick. I believe he had a brother called Thomas and a sister called Charlotte. They were the children of Arnold Merrick and Margaret Baugh; Arnold's parents were John and Susannah, and John's parents were Aristarchus (baptised 1710, Thruxton) and Mary. The family seems to have had connections with Madley, Kings Caple, Much Dewchurch and Allesmore. Aristarchus was the son of Walter Merrick of Aymestrey (baptised 1668) and Mary Pye, daughter of John Pye. I know more, so do get in touch! 3. Hello Dorothy, I am in the throes of playing email catch-up. However, your email & Guy's follow-up on the Hereford list caught my eye. You don't need to rely on a CD version, or the real thing, to view the contents of the 1830 & 1840 Pigot's directory. These are available online. Nicholas Adams has uploaded them to his website at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~nmfa/genealogy.html You can also get there from GENUKI's website: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/HEF/ I hope this helps. 2. Hello. I was just checking to see if my e-mail about Albert William Vivian (Murrell) arrived. When I checked my in-box, I had not received my own [HEF] message yet. I sent it last night around 8 p.m. EST. Thanks. Mischa __________________________________________________________________ Your favorite stores, helpful shopping tools and great gift ideas. 1. [HEF] Need info on Albert William Vivian
    2. Hello, everyone. I posted a few months ago trying to find out my grandfather's 'real' name because we thought he took the name of an American family he stayed with when he came to the U.S. We just found out by accident that his name was Albert William Vivian. We always knew him as Albert William Murrell. Mr. Vivian was probably born in 1895, definitely in Herefordshire, probably either in Clehonger or Weobley. He had a brother named Charlie or Charles Vivian, and a son named Leonard Vivian. Leonard might still be alive, possibly living in Woonton. Would someone be able to look up Albert W. Vivian on the census or birth index? Possibly even in old police or prison records? We're trying to find out who his parents were, and to figure out why he changed his name when he emigrated to America. He came to the U.S. as an adult, and stayed with a family named Murrell. It's possible that the Murrells may have come to the U.S. from England at an earlier date. Albert Vivian took the Murrell name for himself, and we don't know why. He served in the United States Army in World War I. I also couldn't figure out why he didn't stay in England and fight in the British Army. He married Florence Lena Sayce, also from Clehonger, Herefordshire, in the U.S. in the 1920's. Albert died in, I think, 1956. We want to find out if there was some kind of scandal we never knew about, like maybe had he been a 'wanted man' in England, and came to America to escape. My father is David Murrell. David is Albert's son. My grandmother Florence obviously knew the story behind why he changed his name, and so, we think, does my aunt, but she won't tell anyone, and Florence died in 1994. I'd greatly appreciate any help or suggestions anyone has for where I could start looking or if anyone could search for me if it isn't too complicated. I'm in the U.S.A. and can't come to England myself. Thank you. In the 1881 census Jonathon was lodging at Kings Head Inn, Docklow , Hereford. I am hoping his family are in Leominster in the 1881 census as his son Jonathon married a Sarah in 1884. So could SKS please look in the 1881 census for the surname BENBOW in Leominster or are there to many of them. Mainly there would be a wife at home with some children maybe. Any help please, regards Lauren in Aust
