    1. [HEF] Herefordshire middle name IGI Index now available
    2. Hugh Wallis
    3. Dear Hereford listers I have subscribed just to make this announcement and will unsubscribe after posting this as I have no Hereford connections myself. Please address any enquiries to me off list. I have just uploaded my Hereford IGI Middle Name index at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis. This adds Hereford to the other counties for which I have created such an index. I believe that middle names are an invaluable resource for finding clues to family relationships. Strangely I have seen very little written about their use as research pointers in any of the literature, nor have I seen this issue discussed much on the mailing lists. I have not seen any middle name indexes or search tools available anywhere either. BUT - often a person's middle name is the same as the maiden name of their mother or a grandmother or reflects some other familial connection (maybe the name of a patron or benefactor). It may also be the father's surname for births occurring out of wedlock. It seems obvious to me, therefore, that they have significant value in genealogical and family history research. I have found over 3,200 different middle names (some of which are obvious transcription errors for each other) appearing in nearly 9,000 of the christening/birth/adult baptism and marriage records on the IGI for this region. This is out of a total of over 315,000 christening/birth/adult baptism and over 152,000 marriage records (representing half that number of marriages, of course, since there are two records in the IGI for each marriage) for these churches/chapels. This is all of the entries in the IGI for Hereford that have been extracted as part of the controlled extraction program. I have not yet checked the parents' names on the baptism records for additional middle names - that is a much longer task which I may or may not be able to do. As always a warning about using the IGI is necessary. It is ONLY an index and is full of transcription errors. However it has been a mammoth undertaking on the part of the LDS and is an invaluable aid to research. Nevertheless, it bears repeating that there is no substitute for viewing the original records (or at least fiche or film of them). The IGI does assist you in locating those records and so narrowing down your area of search. 1. [HEF] 1841 or 1861 census for Ross
    2. Rebecca Davies
    3. Dear listers, Does any kind soul out there have access to the Ross census for 1841 or 1861 and could perhaps help me break through a rather robust brick wall? The family I'm looking for is the following; a couple of members have been found in 1851/1881 at an address in New Street, but there's not the slightest trace of others: Thomas CLARKE b. c. 1815 Ross William ROBINSON b. c. 1810 Sarah ROBINSON / CLARKE (nee BENNET) b. c. 1812 North Nibley Maria ROBINSON b. 1836 Ross Frederick HAWKER b. 1830s, married Maria Robinson in 1854 Sarah Elizabeth HAWKER, b. 1855 Ross Any info on these individuals would be MORE than worth its weight in gold. I'd be happy to offer an NLW lookup in return, if required, as I'll be able to be there for a couple of days soon. Unfortunately I'm unable to get to Hereford. Best wishes, Rebecca Davies, Freiburg, Germany

    3. Hi Phil! No info for you sorry, but I just wanted to publicly thank you & Heather for your parts in a great, and very educational, day out at the Family & Local History Fair at LLandrindod Wells last Saturday. I'd probably have spent more time at your stall, but the sauna effect was quite disconcerting! I went there, hoping to learn a little more about research - I didn't expect that whilst there, the knowledge about one branch of my family tree would increase by 160 years; I had been stuck on a gt-gt-grandfather born in 1849, now I have info on 4 of his gt-gt-gt grandparents, and the parents of one of those! All for the sake of one word, as my gt-gt-gt-grandfather's forename was mis-transcribed on the 1851 BRE Census. Knowledge of another elusive branch also went back a couple of decades, and I even got a couple of rough birthdates for some Herefordshire families. All in all, it was definitely worth the effort of making the trek, and not just to get an idea of some faces behind the names on these lists. x Kate. Anyway EVANS and The Dam are mentioned amongst my info. In the Tithe Apportionment for Walford c.1843 there's William EVANS who is owner/occupier of several pieces of land and a cottage situated between The Dam and Howle Green. Also:- Voters Lists for Walford 1859/60 Voter: Thomas EVANS Place of abode: The Dam Qualification: Freehold house & land Property situated: Howl Hill Lascelles & Co. 3. Dear Everyone! I have been trying for about three years to discover the marriage of an ELIZA HIRONS. Although born in Gloucestershire, extensive research indicates that she was not maried there. I am now enquiring in neighbouring counties. Her details are as given below. ELIZA HIRONS, born about 1808 in Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire. Married WILLIAM BECKETT ( born about 1795 in Buckingham, Buckinghamshire, Chimney Sweeper) in about 1830 - 1833. They settled down in Stratford on Avon where they had 14 children. Does anyone know of the above couple's marriage and/or about any HIRONS' living in Herefordshire? Regards, Mike Walker

    3. Jane Chamberlaine married Edward Inns in May 1725 in St Peter's Hereford. A fair way from home, as one of them was described as of Woolhope, Herefordshire. The apparent reason for the distance would appear to be the appears of her son in November that year (although as Jane already had an illegitimate son in 1721, I wouldn't have thought she had much of a reputation to save.) I can't find a suitable baptism for Jane: does any one have a suitable Jane in their family who might be "my" Jane? Is anyone else interested in the Chamberlaine family in Herefordshire? Sara White
