    1. [HEF] EDWARDS, PETERSTOW, 1870's
    2. Paul Edwards
    3. Hi, I'm new to the list and wonder if anyone can help. I have my great-grandfather, Henry (or Harry) EDWARDS in the 1901 census giving his birthplace as what looks like Peterstow. There wasn't a county mentioned and it is possible that the 'w' is an 'n', but my best bet is on Peterstow. His age puts him born in 1872/3. On his marriage certificate he gives the name of his father as Thomas Edwards, a coachman. I have failed to find him in the 1881 census - in fact I have found only one 'Edwards' born in Peterstow - she is Agnes Edwards, step-daughter of William Higgins, living in Gloucestershire. She has a brother, Henry, age 10, and the place of birth is given as Hentland, which I believe is not too far from Peterstow. He might be a possible suspect, but the age is wrong and also what happened to his father Thomas? If anyone could shed light on this mystery I'd be very grateful! Thanks in advance, Paul Edwards Working with UNICEF in Rwanda

    3. I know this is not anything to do with family history, but.. Can we please spare a few moments for the families of those two children? My heart goes out to them, and I am sure you all feel the same. I have a teenage daughter myself and I hate it when I don't know where she is, or who she is with. We must watch out for any child that looks to be in any kind of danger, no matter how insignificant it seems at the time! Please report it!! I hope with all my heart that whoever is responsible for this gets all that they deserve and more. I do apologise for going off on a tangient but, when it comes down to it, no-one deserves what these families are going through. We may be looking for our ancestors, but...... at the end of the day our children are our descendants! Speaks for itself!! regards to you all Hazel

It is/was in the pavement by the porch at Much Dewchurch church - " Elizabeth wife of Aristarch Merrick of Thruxton; ob. ---Jan. 1777 aet. 66 " 2 There is a photo of the Pye of the Mynde mansion on our website together with some notes on the history of Much Dewchurch. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~maggiesirishkin/dew1.html Best of luck, ADRIAN

    1. [HEF] Anyone researching Pye connections?
    2. Nicola Meyrick
    3. Dear All I was in Herefordshire a couple of weekends ago, researching my Merrick ancestors, one of whom married a Miss Mary Pye in 1704. She was, I believe, the daughter of Elizabeth and John Pye of Kilpeck, and sister of John of Thruxton (who died unmarried) and of Jemima Pye, who married a Russell. I'm fairly sure that Mary was the granddaughter of William Pye of Thruxton, who left an annuity for the poor in his 1689 will - a bequest which is still paid today. Does anyone have any connections or would like to share information? Best wishes to all Nicola Meyrick This e-mail (and any attachments) is confidential and may contain personal views which are not the views of the BBC unless specifically stated. 1. [HEF] Meredith/Jones of Hay, Clifford and Brilley
    2. James Evans
    3. Dear List, I have just received a copy of the 1817 marriage at Clifford of James MEREDITH, Bachelor of Hay and Mary Jones, Spinster. She is said to be 'also of this parish' so I don't know whether this means that she was also of Hay or whether it means that she was of Clifford. The 'also' would tend to support the former. The marriage was 'by licence with consent of parents'. James and Mary both signed and the witnesses who also signed were John Meredith and Catharine Jones. I think this may be the same James and Mary Meredith that baptized two daughters Margaret (my gggg g-mother) and Sophia in Brilley in 1822 and also Mary in 1825. James was a labourer/farmer. In the 1851 census (of Gilwern, Breconshire), Mary gives her birthplace as Abbeydore. James Meredith may have originated over the border in Breconshire somewhere in the Hay-on-Wye area. I'd be very grateful if anyone could offer any information about this family or James and Mary's origins. Searches of the 1841 census for the p! arishes of Brilley and Eardisley (where Margaret was first married in August 1841) have failed to find them. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Best wishes James

    1. [HEF] Fw: re, George WILLIAMS, deceased, 1922.
    2. New Zealand
    3. From, Ted THOMAS. edwardthomas@wxc.net.nz Re, (HEF) George WILLIAMS. Deceased 1922. Hello Listers, I will be very grateful if some kind person could help me with information regarding a George WILLIAMS, of Hillside, St.Weonards, Herefordshire, died 20th. July, 1922. Admin. was granted to his wife, Sarah Ann WILLIAMS. His effects amounted to £344-8s-2d. The death index shows he died aged 61. As marriages have been checked from Jan. 1906. to Dec.1908. with no sign of a marriage between George Williams, and Sarah Ann Williams. I am wondering if someone would be able to discover anything from the above mentioned address. Or perhaps, whether there could be some details available from the Funeral Directors, or a Cemetery Head stone, if this is possible to establish. I am hoping to discover his occupation, and something about when and where they married, and any issue. Thank you for reading this. Regards, Ted.

    3. Hello Lawrence Your message was extremely timely as I have just got round to having another 'go' at my 'neglected' HARRELL Evesham ancestors . g grandmother Sarah Jane HARRELL b 11 Sept 1849 Evesham, ba 5 Oct 1849 All Saints, Evesham, dau of Samuel Davis HARRELL and Jane [COLLEY]. Samuel and Jane COLLEY were married 8 Jun 1829 St Alban, Worcester. Samuel was a tailor. The family were at Mill St, Evesham in 1849, also 1851 Samuel, presumably the same, was still at Mill St in 1881 but seemingly with a different wife. His birthplace is given as Bromyard, Worcs. I do have the 1881 census details. Any details of this family in 1851, 1861 and 1871 would be gratefully received. I do not know if the family were in Evesham in 1841, but if so that, too, would be of interest. Diana Sheasby nr Banbury, Oxon

    3. Hello Wendy Could you perhaps confirm Sarah DAINTY's place of birth, please? You say Walford in about 1818, but the Sarah who features as James REDDING's wife in the 1851 Census (with which you say you've had a lot of help from people on this list) is shown as having been born in GLS Broderiss(?). I have a Sarah DAINTY born about 1818 in Walford. She married James REDDING (b. 1808 in Walford) and they were living in Walford in 1851 with children James & Sarah REDDING. Also does anyone have access to parish records for Walford who could look up the baptisms of Sarah Dainty & James Redding for me please? many thanks > Wendy from Nottingham >

    1. [HEF] FreeCen: HEF 1871 - call for volunteers
    2. Stephen Karner
    3. Hi folks, I am writing to the list with an update about the FreeCen HEF 1871 census transcription project. The status of the project can always be viewed at: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~slkarner/FreeCen/ I wish to heartily thank all the new volunteers who responded to the recent call for help. We are progressing with the project, as you can see from the statistics: Start date: September 2001 (films on loan for 2 years) Number of Pieces to allocate: 50 Pieces out for transcription: 28 Number of Pieces transcribed: 2 (hence, these need checkers) We also have a volunteer starting up on one of the films that the HEF 1871 census was _not_ going to work on. This film contains 3 census Pieces. So, as a result of the recent call for help we picked up volunteers to work on 10 more Piece numbers. I am sorry to report that a volunteer signed on for three Piece numbers has withdrawn from the project for personal reasons. Otherwise our total number of allocated Pieces would have been well over 30!! I believe the volunteers that we have on board deserve a _huge_ round of applause for their efforts. Many people will benefit from their hard work. Remember...the aim of the FreeCen project is to bring the contents of the UK censuses to everyone via the internet - free for the user! However, as you can see from the above numbers we still have much work to be done for the HEF 1871 census (and for the other regional census projects). Would you consider volunteering for the project? Remember, transcription is only the first phase of the project work. We will also need Checkers once the Pieces have been transcribed. We will provide the software, the census microfilms, and troubleshooting support to all volunteers. If you have access to a microfilm/microfiche reader (or even a home scanner), a computer, and some spare time... you have all the 'tools' needed to volunteer. Your help will be appreciated by us, and ultimately by the masses!! Cheers to all, Steve Karner (sugarglider@cox-internet.com Texas, USA) ----- »» HFHS member #1610 »» HEF co-ordinator for FreeCen (http://freecen.rootsweb.com) Have you thought about being a volunteer? 2. David Hudson
    3. Are there any members undertaking research on the Walters Family who lived in Llanwarne near Hereford from 1780 onwards? As far as I am aware there are two of us at the present time who are undertaking research on different lines of the family tree. There is some information on the IGI submitted by the late Anne Praed from California. Her husband, Peter Praed, has kindly sent me Anne's research notes. My wife's great-grandfather, John Rowland Walters, was born in Llanwarne in 1835 and married Annie O'Brien from County Meath in Ireland. He was a prison officer and lived in later life in Liverpool. There is a connection with the Hill family from the Midlands through William Walters marrying Marion Hill and I am in touch with Mary Currie who is related to Marion Hill. Any help would be grately appreciated. David Hudson
