Hello Could someone please advise me on a computer programme with which to enter and build my family history details. Preferably one which is user friendly and not too expensive! Please email me with your recommendation(s) thanks. jiff1@xwilliamsx.fsnet.co.uk Jeff.
I was hoping there may be a very kind person who may look up this family in 1891 census please. Apparently there were at least 8 children, so we may find the other 6. Also, without sounding too greedy, The SMITH family at Llanveynoe, Hereford, in 1851 would also be very useful please. Vear SMITH may have just made it on to 1851 census. A long line of Vear, so maybe the Father will also be Vear. This is from 1881. This was so interesting that I just had to share it. It is in regards to the Virginia Dare mystery. Someone has in their possession what they believe is the tombstone of Virginia Dare. The following is taken directly from the email. Can anyone do their best to decipher it? If so, send me a copy if you would. I find this very interesting. Renee Waring From: "Stephen Horrillo" <stephen@stephenhorrillo.com> To: <OLD-ENGLISH-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, October 04, 2002 8:00 PM Subject: [OEL] Early Modern English on Tombstone > I have an old tombstone that has been in my family for many years. It is purportedly the tombstone of Virginia Dare, the first English child born in America. I'm trying to get a good translation of what is written on the back. The following is what thirty four scholars back in the 1940's found that it said. Any help in translation and any suggestions on how to authenticate the tombstone would be greatly appreciated. Only misery and war two year. Above half dead ere two year more from sickness. Been four and twenty savages with many of ships unto us. Small space of time they, afright of revenge, ran all away. We believe it not you. Soon after the savages fain spirits angry, suddenly murther [murder] all save eleven. Mine child Ananias too slain. With much misery bury all near four miles east this river upon small hill. Names writ all there on rock. Put this there also. Savage show this unto you and hither we promise you to give great plenty presents. EWD. The above is my interpretation of what the words on the tombstone say. It would appear that EWD's father left to return to England and soon afterwards the rest of the party came to this place (does not say exactly where this is but presumably can be traced by going backwards from the place of burial, where the tombstone was found). Before two years was up, more than half the party were dead from sickness. Twenty four savages came with many ships (possibly canoes). After a short time, they were afraid of revenge being taken upon them and all of them ran away. [It then says that EWD and the party believe it was not the father that frightened the savages, but it is not possible to say what had made them afraid.] Soon afterwards the savages thought the spirits were angry and they suddenly murdered everyone in the party except for eleven. EWD's child, Ananias, was also killed. With much misery the remainder of the party buried all the dead four miles east of this river on a small hill. They wrote the names of the dead on a rock and put this tombstone there too. They promised that if the savages showed him [the father] the tombstone and burials, he would give them many presents. Don't know if this is correct but it is what it appears to me to be. I have no idea how it would be authenticated, nor how you would tell where the tombstone may have originally stood. Perhaps you have museums and historians that could help you. It could be that some of the Indian tribes that traditionally inhabited that part of the country could help. I believe the Indians have a tradition of oral history. I have no idea how you would go about trying to find out. Please do keep us posted on any information you find and any further steps you may take. It is a fascinating story. Even if it should prove not to be true, it is still a very good story, in my opinion. Audrey
Dear Listers Would anyone be able to check up a christening record for me. I have from the Family Search Website a Walter Smyth christened 16 FEB 1754, Almeley, Hereford, England. What I am looking for is the date of birth. My 4xgreat-grandfather Walter Smyth died in Calcutta, India 1813 aged 60 which puts his date of birth at 1753. Could be the same man. I am looking for any descendants relating to COOK/POWELL of Bullingham. Edward Cook bc 1857 from Ledbury Hereford. Many thanks Donna Western Australia
It would appear that the people I am looking for may not have been in Hereford for the 1851 census. Therefore I am trying again for the 1861 census. So, could someone with access to the 1861 census for Ross or Hoarwithy look for the following people. Milson EVANS Mary Ann WATKINS It is possible that Mary Ann was married to Milson by this time. Thanks
My ggreat grandmother FLORENCE PRICE was born( ive been told) in the late 1860s, at Burghill Herefordshire. Her fathers name was JAMES PRICE. I have tried to find her, according to the 1881 census their is a JAMES PRICE & family living in Burghill but no Florence! she would be about 15-17 years old, would she be working away from home when the census was taken? If so how can i find her? Now the headache bit! according to the 1881 census their is a JAMES PRICE living in Ross with his family which includes a daughter called FLORENCE aged 12 Which one am i related to??? whoever said tracing your family history is relaxing has got it WRONG!!!!!!!! Keith.
Am researching a Thomas Evans who was born in 1866 to Milson EVANS and Mary Ann WATKINS in Hoarwithy, Hereford. He move to Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia sometime in the 1880's. My website which includes this person has recently been updated. Take a look at http://cmahoney.orcon.net.nz/Australia/Barryevans.htm
Could someone with access to the 1851 census look for the following people for me. Milson EVANS Mary Ann WATKINS They will be either in Ross, or more likely Hoarwithy (I actually think they are both the same place). I don't know much else about them and they may have been married by 1851. I do know that Milson was Shepherd or a Labourer. Thanks
Good morning from Melbourne Australia, another wonderful day. Rain, hail, wind. Could be fine later though. My lines of interest in Hereford are: WILLIAM MORRIS (born 1815 in Pencombe died 14 Jan 1891) and ELIZAEBTH BERRY born Dec 1817 in Moccas, died 15 Nov 1900. Liked to dodge censuses I think. Both are buried in Hereford Cemetery Section 4, Grave 4232. I believe there is a headstone. Could I ask for someone to have a look? Happy to do lookups in Australia. GEORGE MORRIS (born 02 Oct 1845 Orleton Copmmon) died 1925, (am getting the certificate), EMMA DOWNS born 1845 in Eye, died 02 Apr 1917 (address The Rock). Both buried Richards Castle reference RIC/B/80. Would appreciate someone looking at the grave if you live in the area. Unable to find a marriage for George and Emma. First child born October 1872 in Richards castle. Daughters Elizabeth and Annie married into Lloyd and Archer lines. Emily married a Hickson. She is my direct line. Regards Lyn Baker

Hi! I am (still) looking for information about the parents of my great-grandfather, Mark ROBERTS, born in Clehonger, Herefordshire on 12 Mar 1860. His mother was Elizabeth BURGOYNE. His father is not listed on his birth certificate, so I assume Mark was illegitimate (or an orphan?) but that his fathers surname was ROBERTS. David Porter gave me some great info (thanks, David) back in May that he got from the 1881 and 1891 censuses of Clehonger, and from some monumental inscriptions - but these don't help in determining even who the father might have been. Can anyone give me any clues as to how I could find out what his father's name was? Thanks, Allen New Zealand
If anyone has access to an 1841 and1851 Census, would they please help me locate my ggg GEORGE PURCELL. His birthplace c.1823 may be Wales or Leominster Herefordshire. About 1848 he married MARY PRICE b.1829 Glasbury,Radnorshire, Wales. A ks named Kate located a family in the 1851 Census INDEX of Herefordshire who may be the parents of ggg GEORGE although he isn't listed with the children below. Perhaps he is in the 1841 Census List. I would appreciate the birthplaces/occupations/ relationships from the following 1851 Census Index listing: Parish Leo-South St., District 1981, Folio Number 099b PURCELL George 51 Leo-South St. 1981 099b PURCELL Mary 46 " " " PURCELL Ann 24 " " " PURCELL Sarah 18 " " " PURCELL Emma 16 " " " PURCELL Thomas 14 " " " PURCELL Fanny 11 " " " PURCELL Ellen G. 07 " " " If the above family were living on South Street in 1841, perhaps GEORGE PURCELL is listed there. Any information would be most appreciated. Lillian Ontario, Canada
I have been told MATHON in Worcestershire is now in Hereford county. I wonder if SKS could look up 1851 Census for Hannah HILL born in 1841 at MATHON. My main concern is if her mother's maiden Surname was LUCY and of course I would like to know other members of family. Thank you for anyone who may be able to help me.Margaret in Australia.
