Hi Listers, I have received a marriage certificate today. John LEWIS (24) married Harriett NOTT (20) at the Parish Church, Bromyard on 29th June 1875. John's father was Robert LEWIS a labourer & Harriett's father was John NOTT, also a labourer. I wondered if anyone had access to the 1871 census for the area if they could look the family up please? Thank you very much, Vanda (Isle of Wight) PS. If anyone wants anything looking up on the Isle of Wight in exchange, please let me know.

List, A few details for the geeks amongst you all about the 1891 Census for Herefordshire. 1891 Census Index for Herefordshire, County Index. The final Registration District of the 1891 Census Index, Bromyard RD has now been completed and is available to purchase on CD at £5 plus 50p P & P A big thank you to all the 35 people who have worked on this project, all of you that have transcribed, typed or check your way through the last 2 years. The full county index is now also available on CD at £10 plus 50p P & P Where fiche have contained bordering county parishes we have decided to include them, after all our ancestors did not stop at the county borders, you will find entries from part or all of the following; Bromyard RD includes the Parishes and Hamlets of Acton Beauchamp, Lower Sapey, Tenbury, Great Kyre, Bockleton, Little Kyre, Stoke Bliss, Hanley Child, Hanley William, Eastham, Orleton, Rochford, Lindridge, Knighton on Teme, Berrington, Hutton, and Upton in Worcestershire. Also includes the Parishes and Hamlets of Burford, Greet, Whitton, Whatmore, Weston, Tilsop, Boraston & Nash in Shropshire Ross RD includes parts of the following Gloucestershire parishes; Highleadon, Newent, Oxenhall, Pauntley, Ruardean, Rudford, Taynton, Tibberton, Upleadon. Also includes parts of the following Monmouthshire parishes; Skenfrith, St Maughans & Rockfield. Kington RD includes the Parishes and Hamlets of Glynfach, Hay, & Llanigon in Breconshire. Also includes the Parishes and Hamlets of Barland, Burlingjobb, Burva, Colva, Ednol, Evenjobb, Franksbridge, Gladestry, Glascomb, Harpton & Woolfpits, Kinnerton, Llandegley, Llanfihangel Nant Melan, Michaelchurch, Newcastle, Newchurch, New Radnor, Old Radnor, Stapleton, Walton, Willey and Womaston in Radnorshire. For all the geeks out there there were 21,000 children under 15 years old recorded, six of these were infants not yet named, all under 1 month, the youngest 1 hour old, Surname Roberts born in Linton. The oldest recorded were two 98 year olds. Surnames, there were over 7,000 different variants of names, Christian names were even more numerous at over 11,000 variants. The Top Ten most common Surnames were in descending order; Jones, Williams, Davies, Price, Powell, Smith, Lewis, Evans, Watkins and Morgan. Christian Names Top Ten, William, John, Elizabeth, Thomas, George, James, Mary, Charles, Sarah and Henry, so if you hoping to find a William Jones (272) or a John Williams (179), all I can say is good luck. In the column which asked for 'Parish Born' there over 10,000 different locations listed, amongst those were places like Australia, Bangalore, Barbados, Brazil, China, Germany, India, Japan, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, USA, Utah or just '17 Blenheim Terrace, London'. Our ancestors certainly did travel about, in fact 50,000 of the 136,000 in the index were not listed as being born within Herefordshire. Phil Bufton Vice Chairman Herefordshire FHS
Hi I am new to the list and am researching Joseph Smith who married Maria Godwin a son was born 5 March 1853 at Church Street St. Johns, whose name was Sydney Godwin Smith. Joseph was a Carver and Gilder. Does anyone have any information on these people, and how I can research a Carver and Gilder in Hereford. When Sydney married he gave his name as Smyth and he was a photographer. Many thanks Pat Shepherd
Hi Listers, I'm new to this list so here is my current brick wall. I am trying to establish the identity of a Lady J BATEMAN who in the 1851 census was at her address of 19, Marlborough Buildings, Bath in Somerset with her butler, WILLIAM SKINNER my 2X Great Uncle. Her age is given as 80 (place of birth not given) and his as 63 born Selworthy, Somerset. The 1841 census shows the address was in the possession of Lady BATEMAN but on the day of the census the house was only occupied by two servants. A check of Pigot's 1830 and 1842 Somerset Directories shows Lady BATEMAN and Hon Lady BATEMAN at 19, Marlboro' Buildings respectively, at no time is her first name used. An entry in the Bath Chronical dated 10.12.1840 states:- November 30 at Shobden Court, Herefordshire, the Right Hon Lady BATEMAN, a daughter. It is hardly likely that the Lady J BATEMAN I am trying to identify would be the mother of this little girl, but there is probably a connection somewhere. In an effort to trace the movements and possible descendents of my 2X Great Uncle I need to identify this elusive Lady J BATEMAN. Can anyone please help (1) to identify her; (2) if you have access to the 1841 census for Herefordshire please look up Shobdon Court . Thanks in anticipation, Fred Skinner.

Does anyone have any info on >these two elusive ancestors of mine. TIA Nothing definite but in the 1881 census there is no obvious household with these two married. None of the Thomas Davies born Herefordshire 1861-3 look to be from Barewood, but these are the only two others with no birth place other than (probably) the county. Both look possible (to me!), if that helps (unless he or the family has given another birthplace, probably not very likely as most of the others are still 'at home' with the parents). Hello Janet, I asked my workmate, John Vaughan about his family in Kington. Unfortunately none of his family are interested in tracing their family history. You could try the Kington History Society, they are based at Kington library, im not sure if they are on the internet. Im hoping to go to Hereford Record Office before christmas i will try and look up the Vaughans there. sorry i didnt have better news. Keith.
My Great Grandfather George Henry Butcher (born 1875) was given an OBE for his efforts at organising the agricultural supplies for the county in world war 1. I would like to know if anyone knows of a web site where I can find out more about the award & what was behind it. I only know this from an article by Edgar J. Duffield in The Garage & Motor Agant in 1949. I have not seen all the article & so would be interested if anyone may know how to try & track the article down. I hope you may help. Can anyone out there help me ? I am trying to find my Ggrandmother, Sarah Jane Fletchers birth. According to her marriage certificate her father was William Fletcher, a dispenser. She was born in Weobley in 1869/70, according to the 1901 census, however no trace of her birth can be found in the Weobley area. I think I have found her on the 1881 census as a pupil/scholar at the Orphanage School, 133 St. Owen Street, Hereford St. Owen. Family tradition has her going to her mothers funeral many years later, but it could be a mistake. If so why was she in an orphanage. Does anyone have access to the '71 census for this area, if so would they be kind enough to keep an eye out for her. Any help or ideas very gratefully received, Georgina Edwards
Dear List, This one may be aimed at the wrong list but I have a hunch that it may be a HEF problem. I am researching the GREENLY family of HEF but I have come across a document which is an Arbitration Award whereby a Charles HOPLEY, a blacksmith, of Walton in Radnorshire comes to owe 4 members of the GREENLY family in HEF the princely sum of "One Hundred pounds of good and lawful money". I see from the IGI that there were HOPLEYs at Eardisley around this time (as there were GREENLYs). Perhaps this unfortunate smith originated there. Whilst not strictly relevant to the genealogy, I would love to discover just how this debt came to pass. If anyone knows of the HOPLEY family around this time or can cast any light on this strange debt, I would love to hear from you. David Matthews
I would be very grateful if anyone with access to either the 1861 or 1871 Census for Kington could look for information on Thomas VAUGHAN, born in 1853. There is another Thomas Vaughan from the same area who is listed in the 1881 Census as being the same age but in the 1901 as being born in 1861. Hopefully, information from either of the above Census may help to sort them out. Thanks in anticipation. Janet Auckland NZ
Hello Janet, I work with a member of the Vaughan family from Kington, i will ask him for some information about his family. Keith.

A bit earlier than your lot, (just a bit though!) but is there perhaps any connection to the Rev. Richard SMITH, minister at Croft 1743 -1796? there has been a suggestion that he was connected to the SMITHs at Bircher. Now I am in the dark as to where all these places are, and my atlas doesn't help much. No I have many transcribed records on my website, The record was taken from the Raglan baptisms 1696 - 1837, but in the future I will be adding the 1851 census for Monmouthshire. I am in the process of purchasing 75% of the 1851 census for Monmouthshire from the PRO. I will then gradually transcibe it.
