    3. Dear Listers I'm writing to offer you some info about Shobdon Court and Lord Bateman. In the Hereford RO there is a group of documents presented in 1949 by Gre(n)ville Phillips, file reference P6. Document 6/22/7 is "An account of the meeting of the tenantry and tradesmen of Lord Batemen [sic] for the purpose of presenting Mr SMITH, late of Shobdon Court, with a piece of plate with tea service as a mark of their esteem and respect. Contains transcript of speeches given. 22 February 1838." Document 6/22/8 is a list of subscribers to above plate. My interest was in some of the other docs. in the file (principally those relating to the GRAINGER family) so I didn't examine these two very closely: as I remember they were no more than hastily written notes. However, I thought I would offer these comments in case you want to follow them up. Kind regards, Bert Pemberton in Blackpool, Lancs. >From: "gordon evans" <gordonwevans@btinternet.com> >To: ENG-HEREFORD-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: Re: [HEF] Lady J BATEMAN?/WILLIAM SKINNER >Date: Fri, 25 Oct 2002 22:04:11 +0100 > >Hello Fred > >I'm afraid that in the 1841 Census Shobdon Court, Herefordshire, was (like >your Bath address) occupied by just two man-servants - William TAYLOR, aged >30, and Richard WILLIAMS, aged 17. >I couldn't see anything in the Census which might have given a clue as to >who owned the property, but the BATEMAN family were certainly very >influential in the area >in the 18th and 19th centuries (the local pub is to this day called the >Bateman Arms). >Kellys 1934 Directory of Herefordshire mentions that when the ancient >Shobdon church (built 1141) was pulled down down in 1752 Lord BATEMAN >caused >the three principal arches to be re-erected in the park, where they still >remain. 3. Tom, Sorry, I just noticed you are in USA. EH is quite a small place. The birth records were very badly kept in that church at that time. They are now at the Herefordshire RO in Hereford. I am 250 miles away in Brighton but can give you the name of a lady researcher who operates at Hereford RO for quite reasonable rates if you email me off-list. 1. [HEF] Re: James Stinton Born about 1797 and Stinton FTs from Ada Stinton
    2. Joan Houken
    3. Could some kind person help me to find my Gt Gt Grandfather. His name was James Stinton. James was believed to have been born in Shelsley Beauchamp, but I cannot find anything to confirm this. (Info taken from marriage certificate says SB.). Marriage certificate says he was married to Sarah Clifton on July 2, 1815 in Avenbury, Herefordshire. (Last Summer, I was in England and found this ruined Church - very close to Bromyard, Herefordshire.) Their children were Benjamin (1816), Edward ,(1818), Anne, (1826), Harriet, (1822), James (1825), William (1828), Mary (1831) and John (1833)(my Gt. Grandfather.) James, who was married to Sarah Clifton, died Nov 24, 1842 in Wollaston, Stourbridge. Sarah his widow remarried later to a David Haslock. She remained in King Street, Wollaston, Stourbridge. David Haslock, must have been a neighbour at the time of her marriage to James. She died in King Street, Wollaston, Stourbridge. I am at a loss where to go next to search for James. Any suggestions would be gratefully received. Others researching this family are also stuck on this James. One lady has James married to a different Sarah (Willett), but I believe her to be wrong. Someone researching Haslock family contacted me and told me about Sarah marrying his ancestor (kindly sending me the marriage certificate with addresses etc.) I really would appreciate some help, even if it is only suggestions as to where to look next. (Have looked at 1881, 1861 census', have been to Hereford and Worcester GROs and found little to help me there - but I may have been looking in the wrong areas.) I enjoy reading all the interesting and very informative emails. Keep smiling, Joan.(Wet and raining Houston - glad of the cool weather though) P.S. Children of James & Sarah: Benjamin, Edward both born Stanford on Teme, Edward married Elizabeth Pope and lived in Stourbridge. Anne born in Eastham m William Pearce, James married Mary Pope lived in Stourbridge. William born in Stanford, Mary born in Shelsley Beauchamp, married William Bourns, lived in Stourbridge. John born perhaps in SB. married Jane Bond lived in Stourbridge. P.P.S. Have received some of ADA Stinton's research of the Stinton Families in UK. I have added her lists of Births, Deaths and Marriages to my own collection.(1905 GRO Collection) Next I plan to put all the FTs on my software program, Family TreeMaker. She had collected quite a few over the years. I do not have ANY PICTURES and very few certificates from ADA's collection. I will not promise anything, but should a Stinton researcher read this email, I may have some information about their Stinton Family in UK in that collection. ----- Original Message ----- From: <ENG-WORCESTER-D-request@rootsweb.com> To: <ENG-WORCESTER-D@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, November 03, 2002 2:02 AM Subject: ENG-WORCESTER-D Digest V02 #329
