Nothing to do with being a moaning old git, Phil - it's only common sense and common courtesy that look-up results should be posted to the list. I know from personal experience how exasperating it can be to spend time researching something only to be told by the recipient that they've already had the information from someone else off-list. Hope you don't mind if I take this opportunity to point out to fellow-listers that it's simply a matter of clicking on the "REPLY ALL" button rather than just the "reply" one. Not wanting to a moaning old git, but it does save the search being done 2 or 3 times by different people, also as this index has been available for some years now, surely someone must has also done the look-up. A search > on the internet has failed to produce any suggestions for "Dolvach". > Does anyone know whether this was an estate or local place name? I've always assumed that "Dolvach" was a specific house - there are Parrys there later (in the 1879 and 1905 Directories, plus the 1881 census, although it's spelt "Dolvaoth" on the cds.) The 'neighbours' on the cds have different addresses, hence my assumption. I checked the 1891 census this morning and same again there - Parrys at Dolvach (RG12/4580/2 86a schedule 58) and no other schedules for that address. If it's any help, I listed the house names to see if it's possible to pick up any clues as to where it is/was, from the enumerator's route:- Caerperthy Botterell New Fram Old Castle Crafty Webb (15 households) Bewfield Farm Little Bewfield Woola Bronttiss Clay Pitts (2 households) Pipers? (x2) Hip Close Old Weston Morgan's Place Longlass (x2) Ann Lewis Merbage Merbage Turners Boat (x2) The Weston New Cottage (x2) Old Turnpike Clay Pitts Shop & Post Office Old School (x3) The Cottage Old Court Bredwardine Bridge Toll House The Holm? House The Vicarage Town House Red Lion Inn Blacksmiths Shop Cook? Pit (x2) The Hill Craft Cottage School Cole brook The Green The Bank The Hill (x2) Old Shops Dolvach Upper Cwm Lower Cwm Unfortunately only a few of the houses are named on the OS maps (from http://uk2.multimap.com/home.html). The order in the 1881 is virtually the same except between The Cottage and the Blacksmith's shop, where it is reversed. There are also additional houses listed at the end (I'd stopped at the end on the round in the 1891). These include Pentre, so perhaps Dolvach was somewhere on the road that runs from the centre of Bredwardine out towards Dorstone? Hope that's some help anyway, Best wishes Barbara Griffiths Coventry UK http://homepage.ntlworld.com/im.griffiths/parryfamilyhistory/parryhome.htm

    1. [HEF] Holmes Marsh, Lyonshall
    2. lizzy johansen
    3. For anyone interested in Holmes Marsh, Lyonshall, I have been sent a copy of an item printed in the Mid-Wales Chronicle back in l995 which writes about this "enigmatic" place. Having ancestors who lived here during the l9th Century I was taken aback by the following description of their home...there I was imagining an idyllic location! This is a shortened adaptation of the article. I believe the shop mentioned was the one run by my g.g.grandfather, Charles PRICE, grocer at Holmes Marsh in l89l..... "Holmes Marsh at Lyonshall is something of an enigma, baffling local historians because of its dearth of solid fact. A small, though growing community on the edge of the village, Holmes Marsh figures little in the local history books. Most of the information has come from church records or odd paragraphs in the old Kington Times newspaper - such as householders facing prosecution for overcrowding. In years gone by, gentlefolk passing the Holmes Marsh turn would make their children look away "because of the will o' the wisp, or marsh gas, which could be seen there" building up a picture of an area strenuously avoided by village children. There are those living in Lyonshall who recall the absolute necessity to keep well away from Holmes Marsh where they could face trouble. Some went all the way to Almeley School rather than tread on Holmes Marsh soil. "It was always so muddy, difficult to get to school and not get covered", one person said. Apparently the steep gradient of the road down into Lyonshall was eased following a mammoth task to shift tons of soil from the hill. the final resting place for the earth was along the track which now forms part of the road looping around the marsh. One resident remembered more black and white cottages in those days, some of them picturesque with their thatched roofs. The common was a regular grazing place for horses though there was a woman living nearby who would rush out flapping her arms angrily. In those days one of the Holmes Marsh cottages doubled as a local shop much used in the neighbourhood. Regular services were held in the mission hall (still standing) which would have saved locals from trudging to church in Lyonshall. Just across the field from the mission hall was a large pool which provided much merriment for the Holme Marsh children when it froze over in Winter. But whatever happened back in the history of Holmes Marsh still remains something of a mystery". Quite a reputation! Adds a bit of "meat to the bones".... If anyone knows of any local history books written on the area since l995 I would be very glad to learn of them. Regards Diane Johansen

    3. Dear Listers, James Robertson Porter lived for a time in Hereford, marrying Mary Beatrice Stooke, daughter of Edwin Stooke, Estate Agent, 21 September 1895. The 1901 Census finds them in London, but they must have returned to Hereford as Mary, who died in 1943, is buried in Section 1, Hereford Cemetery. Would someone be so kind as to let me know what the inscription says, or at least advise me where I can find same. Thank you in advance. 3. Mary Hopley married John Innes in 1794 in Little Marcle. They were both described as "of this parish" but I have not found Mary's baptism there. I have quite a lot of information to share about her descendants, but need help finding her parents etc. Unfortunately I have not been able to find her burial, so have no age of death and so no approximate date of birth, but she was having children from 1794 to 1803 so I believe her birth must fall into the period 1760 to 1780. Has anyone seen a suitable baptism in the area around Little Marcle in this timeframe? Sara White
