    1. [HEF] SEAL/SCAFFALL/BAUGH
    2. Mike & Barb
    3. Hello All! It's nearing the end of year & time for me to pester you all (again) with my brick wall <g>. John SEAL (aka Peter?) was born in Dewchurch HEF ca Dec. 13, 1785, and may be the son of John SEAL and Ann SCAFFALL, who were married in Little Dewchurch in 1983. The SCAFFALL name is extremely rare and I have only found references to 3 on the whole of the internet!! (Ann being one of them) John joined the 10th Regiment of Foot (North Licolnshire Regiment) in 1803 & served with (I believe) the second battalion in Malta, injuring his leg in June 1815, then appears to have rejoined the first battalion until he was discharged in 1822. John may have been married to Ann BAUGH in 1806, however, his wife (in Canada) was known as Elizabeth and my have been his second wife. In 1832, John SEAL immigrated to Upper Canada as a Chelsea Pensioner and took up land in Medonte, Simcoe County. He and wife Elizabeth had the following children in Canada: Mary b.1835 ; Elizabeth (my 2xgreat grandmother) b 1837. ; Harriet chr. 1843. ; John b.? ; Alice b 1840. ; and perhaps Sarah b.1845 ; We seem to have quite a bit of information of his life in Canada and an impressive time-line, with 2 gaps, being his life in HEF before his military service and his military service itself. Seeking any clues and/or relations. Happy New Year! Barb Spicer Muskoka, Ontario, Canada

    2. Andrew FRANKS
    3. Hello listers I am trying to find information about William PARTRIDGE, born Ledbury, Herefordshire, c1831/32. He was in the Hereford regiment and may well have fought in the Crimea. By 1881 he was living in Chatham, Kent and was a Chelsea Pensioner. So far I have no confirmed details of him in Herefordshire and can only trace him in Kent in 1881. I know nothing of his parents. If anyone has any sources they would be able to look up to trace him that would be great. Where would the regiment have been stationed if in Hereford during the time of a census? If anyone has any advice or information on my gg grandfather it would be most welcome. Merry Xmas, Carol, Berkshire

    3. Hi Bob I know you meant well, but I don't think a few hours drive (and another few back again) to the Herefordshire Record Office would be a very fruitful exercise in this particular case. There was a similar posting to this on the ENG-LIVERPOOL mailing list a couple of days ago seeking information concerning a John BLACKHURST who died (possibly in Hereford) in 1967. The only record the HRO would have of an event as recent as this would be the GRO Index, which is of course freely available in any library or record office anywhere in the UK. I have given the enquirer on the Liverpool list the reference from the GRO Deaths index and suggested that a copy of the death certificate from either the Hereford Registrar or ONS Southport would be a good starting point. 3. Pauline, I don't often reply on List but you surely have a great opportunity in that the Hereford Record Office, which is where you can further your research, is right there in the Old Hereford Barracks where your chap would seem to have been employed, his address being just round the corner. Address - just ask your computer - Hereford Record Office. As you are in UK - pop down and say hello- can't be more than a few hours drive -and I reckon all your problems will be sorted out very quickly - a great bunch you will find there and give the a hug from me from afar. Thanks. Give 'em a chance to have a Chrissy break however, bless 'em. Bob Rudd - wondrous big moon in the sky in a very very dry NSW Aus.

    2. Returned to Hereford again!! Re subscribed! WILLIAM SKEY OF PENCOED. CO.HEREFORD. BORN 1749. I would love to know any family please...he studied at Oriel College. Oxford 1769. Son of Henry Skey... this may be the Skey's I have been hunting for.. Two sons settled in NZ in 1800s. Need to know their family background.. Need where they actually lived... Sons who were in NZ were: William Skey born 1845. died 1900. Ernest Stanley Skey born May 25 1869. died Nove. 1893. the name Fortescue is mentioned through the family wonder if a maiden name passed down? Any assistance gratefully received. Researching Early Settlers to Carterton.NZ. by Adele sec. Carterton District Historical Society I have been given some information from Lincoln's Inn. Temple about the Skey family, so it must be the correct one, as Wm. Skey I was told was a Barrister...father of our William..but could not find out anything when I searched the census.. I was told came from London..but nothing there for them...

    2. gordon evans
    3. Hello Cliff I can confirm that the original Humber PR's (which have never been filmed) are indeed in the safe keeping of the Herefordshire Record Office. I don't know what "full details" you were hoping for as regards the marriage of Samuel HANLEY and Hannah COOPER on 16 December 1783, but the information additional to what you can see on-line in the IGI is that the marriage was after Banns, that the curate was John PHELPS, that both Samuel & Hannah made their mark and that the witnesses were John LEWIS (signed) and Sarah SIMONDS (made mark). Best wishes. 1. Re: [HEF] 1861 lookup request: New Street, Ross
    2. gordon evans
    3. Hello Rebecca Stumbled across this whilst looking for something else in the Hereford RO :- 1861 Census Herefordshire New Street, Ross Thomas CLARK, head, widower, 45, tailor, b HEF Ross. Sarah ROBINSON, boarder, 47, laundress, b GLS North Nibley. Sarah E HAWKER, grand-daughter, 5, scholar, b HEF Ross. Eva P HAWKER, grand-daughter, 3, scholar, b HEF Ross. Interesting that in the on-line 1881 Census Sarah CLARK, aged 66, b GLS North Nibley, is described as the MOTHER, not the grand-mother, of the above Sarah HAWKER (by then married to Samuel NEWITT). Impossible to find any of the others you mention in the 1861 without a surname index, I'm afraid. The only HAWKER's in the 1851 Herefordshire Index are an 18 year-old girl living in Redmarley and a 52 year-old widow (Ann) living with her 18 year-old son (William) in Corse - both places actually in Gloucestershire, but not too many miles (about 10) from Ross. You would presumably get another reference to Frederick HAWKER (possibly giving his occupation + maybe an indication as whether or not he was deceased) if you were to secure young Sarah's marriage certificate. The GRO reference looks to be September 1874 quarter, Ross, vol 6a, page 861. Hope this helps a little.
