As there has been an interest in my WATKINS-COX ancestry I am outlining a quick resumee of the line in case anyone can link: James WATKINS (b.?) mar. Joan GWILLIM l750 Monnington on Wye Parents to nine children. Eldest daughter Susanna (b.l750) mar. 1773 to Thos. WATKINS of Staunton upon Wye. Youngest daughter, Catharine, (b. l765) mar. Thomas COX in Dec.l788 at Monnington. (Thomas was possibly born l763 at Credenhill) Catharine baptised an illeg. daughter, Mary WATKINS, Jan. l788. Did Mary adopt the COX name and marry as Mary "COX" to James MEREDITH in l8l2? After her marriage Catharine and Thomas had nine known children. Their eldest son Thomas (b.l790) mar. Mary WATKINS in l823. Their fourth son William (b.l805) mar. Mary LEWIS, d/o David LEWIS of Madley in l827. After William's early death, Mary remarried Jonathan BEDFORD, s/o John BEDFORD. Their fifth son John (b.l808) mar. Elizabeth JONES at Byford Church in l835 when beth were aged l8. Their youngest daughter, Anne (b.l8l0) married William WILLIAMS in l837 at Monnington. William was born Burghill l811. Witnesses Benjamin MOSELEY and Catherine MEREDITH* Anne had a sister Catharine*, bap. l795 so perhaps she, too, married a MEREDITH? Other names linked to this family by marriage: GILBERT, CLARK, BUTLER, COOKS, TRAYLOR Regards Diane Johansen

Hello all This may sound a bit silly but when looking for William Howard who was born in St Margarets in 1837, on the 1881 census I could only find one born in "St Mitwg" ! I do realise there are many strange interpretations of the spellings of places but this does look a bit too short for me to assume that I definitely have the right one. Could it be anywhere else??? thanks Mal
Dear List, Thanks to Diane Johansen it seems that I can eliminate the possibility that the James Meredith and Mary Cox who were married in Monnington in 1812 are my ancestors. Mary Cox was baptised in Monnington, she was the illegitimate daughter of Catherine Watkins who subsequently married a Cox. This therefore only leaves the marriage in Hereford in 1811 of James Meredith and Mary Price. If these are my ancestors (who were in Brilley by 1822 when my ancestor Margaret was baptized) then a Mary Price should have been born in Abbeydore (or that area) sometime in the early 1780's (even though Mary's 1851 census age indicates a d/o/b 1778). I wonder how an Abbeydore girl ended up getting married in Hereford and why she and her husband then moved to Brilley? As for James Meredith's origins it now seems that I haven't a cat in hell's chance of finding his baptism/parentage/ancestry without a birthplace from the census (he died pre-1851). I might be a bit luckier with Mary Price though! Any! suggestions? Best wishes James Phillips-Evans
Just a note to mention the coincidences that seem to occur in genealogy. I've been following James' search for his Meredith ancestors. (see below). He has found that Mary Cox was the illegitimate daughter of Catherine Watkins who later married a Cox. After searching with Catherine's married name I feel sure that she is a sister to Hannah Watkins Price my gr. gr. grandmother. Now that James has supplied her married name, perhaps I can follow her line down the years. Remember: its always a good thing to send any general (names and dates) info to the list as well as to the person who queried. Thanks James for inadvertently sending me a new lead. I have a passing interest in Oliver and Eckley. The Eckleys I am interested in are in Bromyard but in the 1800's. As to Oliver I have a collateral marriage to Haylings in the 1600's and several other collateral marriages within my data. I would be interested in more info on your data. Stephen J. Hi all I am sure that someone on the list has already mentioned this site but in case it has not been mentioned (or like me you have not seen it mentioned) I found it very interesting. http://www.wykes.org/dist/ You enter data from the LDS 1881 census relating to a surname and it generates a coloured map of the UK showing the distribution of that surname. You can select if you want the map to show distribution of the name by place of birth or by county at the time of census. Does anyone on the list have access to Weobley's Baptisms for the period 1807 - 1817? John Powell and Sarah Peggy (nee Thomas) were married in Weobley in Dec 1806 and as far as we know their first two children were baptised in Dec 1810 (which of course could indicate that they were born some time apart) and the third in 1817 when the family had moved to Shobdon. From that point on she produced a child almost annually until her death in1822 so I was curious as to whether there may have had any other children that we didn't know about whilst they lived in Weobley.
