    1. [HEF] Fw: [CDBOOKS] Census for Herefordshire, Shropshire & Monmouthshire (1861)
    2. Gerald A Cooke
    3. Dave, the List Admin. has agreed to me posting this to the list. I've signed up for two of these but it'll need quite a lot of us to express interest to get it on to Rod list. Gerald ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rod Neep" <rod.neep@archivecdbooks.org> To: <CDBOOKS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, February 20, 2003 3:21 PM Subject: [CDBOOKS] Census for Herefordshire, Shropshire & Monmouthshire We are trying an experiment.... In the first instance this will apply to the 1861 Census for Herefordshire Shropshire Monmouthshire These censuses are *not* yet available for advance orders, but they *are* available to place a "request". The estimated price of each CD set will be £30.00, and it could become cheaper once initial targets are met. Details have been posted on the census project web page at: http://www.rod-neep.co.uk/books/census/index.htm You can tell us of your interest in these censuses by sending an email to: Herefordshire : hef1861@acdb.demon.co.uk Shropshire : sal1861@acdb.demon.co.uk Monmouthshire : mon1861@acdb.demon.co.uk Please send only one email per county! You will not receive a reply, but we will count the number of requests on a regular basis, and once the number nears the break even point then we shall go ahead with the project and send you an email to let you know. At the same time, the census project page and the shopping cart will be updated accordingly, and you will then be able to place an order. No doubt this news will need repeating on occasions to stimulate interest, and make people aware. The more "requests" that I receive, the sooner that these projects will be done. If there are lots of requests, above the break even point, then the price will reduce. Please pass this news on to your friends with interests in these counties! 1. [HEF] PROSSER-Kings Pyon to Weobley
    2. lizzy johansen
    3. I have received a communication from a lady in the USA who is descended from my 4 x g.grandfather, James PROSSER of Kings Pyon. All thanks to the Hereford Surnames Interest List. James and Mary PROSSER had four daughters in Kings Pyon between l787 and l794 - Elizabeth, Margaret, Betty (Susannah) and Jane. Elizabeth was my 3 x g.grandmother, and I am descended from her daughter, Susannah PINKERTON. Elizabeth's youngest sister Jane married John ARCHER at Weobley in l825. She had had an illegitimate son, Joseph Bowen PROSSER eight years previously, bap. at Weobley in l8l7. Pat in America is descended from Joseph. There is an anomaly in our information. Can anyone help? I have found Joseph, his wife Eliza and three daughters, Ann (9) Eliza (7)and Thirza(1) living in Weobley in l85l but I have not located their marriage. Joseph was a master shoemaker and lived in Broad Street, Weobley. Pat in America has a marriage certificate for Joseph Bowen PROSSER and Eliza JONES who married at St. Georges, Hanover Square, London in l858. She found this information as a result of the details given on the death certificate for their daughter Mabel Thirza PROSSER (born Weobley). Apparently her Joseph Bowen PROSSER became a missionary. Would anyone be kind enough to look for an l86l census entry for Joseph and Eliza PROSSER at Weobley. Would he still have been a shoemaker at Weobley in later Trade Directories? I just wonder whether we are, indeed, talking about the same couple - though it would be a big coincidence if we were not. Could it be that Joseph and Eliza travelled to London to marry after they had had their family in Weobley? Perhaps Pat has been sent the wrong marriage certificate - could there have been a Joseph Bowen PROSSER marrying an Eliza(beth) JONES in Herefordshire prior to l84l? There really cannot be that many (Mabel)Thirza PROSSERS born to Joseph Bowen PROSSER in Weobley, can there? I'd welcome any thoughts on this. Many thanks Diane Johansen

    3. Della, Try looking at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ukhfhs/burial.html which is the web page of the Herefordshire Burials Index. The published burials within the NBI only amount to 42,000 entries, the Society's index now stands at approx 50,000 Depending on what dates you are looking at some entries are only available from our Co-Ordinator Alec Whitfield. It relies on unwitting listers to perpetuate it by passing on the duff info.jdbgmgr. and its teddy bear icon is a normal part of your windows operating system and should not be deleted. Pembridge My great grandfather, Charles PRICE, was born l856 in Pembridge, s/o Thomas and Mary PRICE, and his younger brother Thomas was baptised there in l858. There is no mention of his brother Thomas on any Censuses - so I assumed he had died. I wonder whether I have "found" him. It looks as if I need to check for the death of a Thomas PRICE, infant, in Pembridge between l858 and l860. Can anyone help? This is a real mystery. By l86l the PRICE family are living in Presteigne, Radnor- with a son Aaron aged 1 b. Radnor. So it looks as if the family moved there ca. l859. If this is "my" Thomas...why would he have been adopted by a family with even more children than his own? Many thanks Diane Johansen

    2. Andrew Ross
    3. Hi, I'm new to this list. Most of my family are from Yorkshire, with a few from Lancashire (*gasp*) thrown in. I'm looking for the death of a Lavinia MILNE married to Samuel MILNE. The family was from around Manchester / Bury area but their children were born all over including West Yorkshire and Staffordshire. Lavinia was born around 1795. Her last child was born 1832 as far as I know. Her husband remarried in 1835 so she must have died somewhen in between. >From the NBI I know there was a Lavinia MILNES buried 22 Nov 1833 at Hereford St Peter aged 40. The age is about right and I have seen Milne mis-spelled as Milnes on at least on occasion in the records. It's a bit of a long shot but given the family travelled a fair bit and that it's a relatively rare name it _could_ be her. If anyone could check to see if there were any further details for this burial that would confirm or disprove this I'd be most grateful. I might be able to help you with some Yorkshire ancestors in return! Many thanks in advance Andrew

His son was so disapproving that he left home and never returned. That is a pity because that was my grandfather and if he hadn't been so hasty I might own the hotel myself by now. 3. I have noticed recently some mention of the Watkins surname. I have a very sturdy brick wall with a Jane Watkins, my gggrandmother, who was born in Radnorshire somewhere around 1803ish but lived most of her life in Peterchurch and St Margarets in Herefordshire. Has anyone else come across any Watkins family originating from Radnorshire? Hope so! Thanks Mal

    3. In the 1861 census my ggrandfathers address is given just as Highfield, Lower Sapey. I can't find any mention of this on a current OS map or the 1889 one. Does anyone know where Highfield is? 1. [HEF] MARY PRICE - PHILLIPS - EVANS
    2. Lillian Marsden
    3. James, it is of interest to me that your surname is PHILLIPS-EVANS, and you are seeking information on a MARY PRICE. I have all three names in my Hereford tree although I do not know of the Mary you are seeking. There are well over 500 Mary Prices on the LDS website, many from Hereford and Wales. Good luck in your search for her! My MARY PRICE was born Glasbury, Radnorshire, Wales; she married gg-grandfather GEORGE PURCELL (of Leominster) abt 1852. Also I have two other GEORGE PURCELLs from Hereford (Aymestry and Orleton). One married MARY PHILLIPS in 1821; the other married JANE EVANS, 1795. Also our HENRY PURCELL of Orleton married an ELIZABETH PHILLIPS in 1755. I wonder if there is a connection between our families? Lillian Marsden (nee Purcell) Ontario Can
