    1. [HEF] Wilmastone Cottage, Peterchurch names PEARCE & BARNES
    2. valpeace
    3. I am looking for a photograph or drawing or any other information of Wilmastone Cottage, Peterchurch, (there is a mention on the SMR record 5105)if anyone can help I would be very grateful. My great-grandparents lived there - late 1800's up to late 1930's? I have them on the 1901 census. Joseph J Pearce and Mary A Barnes married in June 1894. my GGF was a stockman. In the churchyard at Peterchurch the gravestone says Joseph James Pearce late of Wilmastone Estate.(1936) I have found Joseph's family on the 1881 Census at Wilmastone but cannot find any more details of Mary A Barnes or family, so not sure which district she came from. Can anyone help? Val.

    3. I hope it is OK to discuss this on the list but we really would like other peoples opinion. We have Generations but it has ceased production we hear - bought out- and there will be no more support or updates. We have tried Family Tree Maker but preferred Generations. What to go to next? Does anyone have experience of Custodian ?- we like the look of it as it seems good for more complex information but it is expensive. It also seems to link into that marvellous 1901 Census data extractor site www.leedsindexers.co.uk <www.leedsindexers.co.uk> Sandra

    3. Hi I'm researching the Perkins family that lived in Hereford from about 1848 to 1900. My research goes from my Frank Perkins born in Edgar Street, Hereford in1881 was the son of John Perkins (c 1848) born in Bodenham, Hereford and Harriet Tyler b.1875 in Yarkhill, Hereford. They had several children, George b 1876, Edith b 1877, Chas Jno b. 1879 and Jack born after Frank (Jack married a French lady called Marie) Is anyone else researching this family? I know Jack's son was into family history but the family has lost touch with him. Look forward to hearing from anyone with information. Sue Perkins Picton, New Zealand

    1. [HEF] Family Tree Software - Results
    2. Dear List, Having posted my recent enquiry as to family tree software with excellent charting capability to more than one list, I was rather inundated with replies. A huge thank you to all who took the trouble to respond. You certainly speak with one voice. There is no doubt that Family Tree Maker is the out and out favourite being recommended by over 90% of respondents - almost unanimous! In second place was Genopro Gold which apparently also has an excellent graphical interface. The basic version of the program can be downloaded at: http://www.genopro.com/ As its my birthday shortly, I now know what to ask for. Thank you. David M in Hull, UK

    1. [HEF] Jones of Hereford
    2. Ros Dunnico
    3. Hi Listers, I wonder if anyone can help me with my Jones family as there appear to be a number of people researching various Jones's. maybe someone has come across my family. WILLIAM JONES was born c 1828/8 in Marden or Yarkhill, son of WILLIAM and ELLEN JONES ( no baptism found c 1828/9). He married MARY CATHERINE HANCON on 7 Sep 1854 at All Saints, Hereford. William is described as a coachbuilder. Their first child ANNIE JONES was born at Widemarsh Gate, Hereford and baptised on 17 June 1855 at All Saints, Hereford. Their second child SUSAN ELLEN JONES was born at Widemarsh Gate, Hereford and baptised 26 June 1857 at St John Baptist, Hereford. Thier third child WILLIAM JONES was born at Ivy Cottage, St Johns, Hereford and baptised 30 July 1856 at St John Baptist, Hereford. William Jones the father is described as a Journeyman coachbuilder and the birth was registered by an Ann Collier, occupier of Ivy Cottage and the mother's name is given as Kate Jones formerly Hancon. Between 1856 - 1869 the family disappear, probably because William moved around for his work and I would love to hear if anyone has found them on the 1861 census. William Jones would be a coach builder, Mary Catherine his wife was sometimes called Catherine Mary or Kate, and their known children were Annie born 1855, William (if he survived infancy) born 1856 and Susan Ellen born 1857 and any other children born after 1857. Mary Catherine Jones died in Cheetham, Manchester in 1869 and was brought back to All Saints, Hereford for burial. Her daughter Susan Ellen was living with her aunt Rebecca Rowe in Widemarsh Street, Hereford on the 1871 Census but I do not know what happened to William and the other children and where they were on the 1871 Census, has anyone seen them? So I would be grateful for any information about this family on the 1861 or 1871 Census. Ros Dunnico in wet and cloudy Leigh-on-Sea, Essex.

    2. lizzy johansen
    3. Thomas PRICE was a younger brother to my great-grandfather Charles. According to the VRI, Thomas was baptised at Pembridge on 8.4.l858, s/o Thomas and Mary PRICE. I have also found reference on the VRI to the baptism of a Margaret PRICE, d/o Thomas and Mary PRICE at Pembridge on 29.8.l858...only four months later. On future censuses I can find no mention of any young Thomas or Margaret so perhaps they died in infancy? If anyone happens to be searching the baptism register for Pembridge in the coming weeks, could I please ask you to check to see whether the above entries are likely to be for the same Thomas and Mary PRICE? Grateful thanks Diane Johansen

    1. [HEF] Family Tree Software
    2. I have been carrying out a one name study over the last two years and have been storing the information as a huge family tree chart rather than in traditional genealogy software (I am an architect with access to CAD software and huge plotters so these big charts were a relatively easy thing to do). Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you look at it) the tree is now so huge that it covers an entire wall. Nonetheless, I am very attached to having a comprehensive chart to look at - I find it much easier to keep track of so many individuals (nearly 1000) if I can see it in pictorial form. I have a copy of the Generations Grande Suite with Easytree and I have begun transferring my research into this form (not least so that it can be shared as GEDCOM and published on the net). The program is easy to use but it won't produce charts that show all the individuals with all the dates and sources etc. which is annoying when I can print at anything up to six feet across. Whilst realising that it may be frowned upon to discuss or appraise commercial products on the list, could I ask list members to share their experiences of genealogy software so I don't have to buy the entire shelf of programs to find the one with the best graphical output (off-list if appropriate). Many thanks, David Matthews

    3. Joseph Bowen PROSSER was a first cousin to my g.g.grandmother, Susannah PRICE. He was born in Weobley in l8l7, illeg. s/o Jane PROSSER (later ARCHER). He married Eliza JONES in Weobley in l840 and they had three known daughters: Ann, b. l84l/2 Hampton Bishop, Hef. Eliza, b. l843/4 Weobley, Hef. Thirza, b. l850 Weobley, Hef. I have found the family on the l85l Census living in Weobley where Joseph was a master shoemaker and Eliza a milliner/dressmaker. I would love to find Joseph and Eliza on the l84l Census - either at Weobley or Hampton Bishop. Otherwise, perhaps they are on the l86l or l87l Census still at Weobley?? Their daughter, Thirza, was known as "Mabel Thirza" and she emigrated to Australia. We know that Joseph Bowen PROSSER became a missionary although where and when we are unsure. If anyone can help us locate Joseph and Eliza on earlier or later censuses then that would be a wonderful help. Thank you Diane Johansen

    3. Many thanks to all who responded. Following the first reply I received, I have now found Howton Grove Farm on the modern 1:50000 map. Incidentally, the person involved was a 'Richard COURTEEN'. I think he was born in Tyberton and married in Monnington-on-Wye in 1775. In the licence he is described as 'Timber merchant' but in the deed dated 1778 as 'Gentleman'. I don't know if this is the same person, but the surname is uncommon and he could well be. Any help would be appreciated. 3. Hello Michael According to my 1934 Kelly's Directory of Herefordshire HOWTON was an alternative name for KENDERCHURCH. It's shown on modern OS maps, about 2 miles north-west of Pontrilas, on the A465 road from Abergavenny to Hereford.
