    1. DOG Inn Ewyas Harold
    2. ROBINSON
    3. Hello Art in Canada, In the Ewyas Harold parish records- George Powell of the Dog Inn and his wife Betsey had a daughter Elizabeth baptised in 1851. Mary Powell (of the Dog) aged 70 died 1842. In 1836, John Williams seemed to be the innkeeper when he and his wife Sarah had a son William baptised. 1851 census: George Powell of Dog Inn was 27, born Llandillo. Had Sarah, Edwin and George as well as baby Elizabeth. Wife Elizabeth born Bacton. Next door at Dog Farm was James Powell widower aged 79, born Ewyas Harold. I'd think this was George's father because in 1841, the only George Powell that matches is aged 16 living with his parents James aged 70 and Mary. James was a joiner and no Dog Inn was mentioned. 2. Leila Churchill
    3. Thanks again to Polly and Phil for the information regarding William Hartland. A few years ago I was sent a picture of Harriet Hartland's tombstone but it was difficult to read and the info received will be helpful. I appreciate the date of death for William. The letter that was sent to a relative in the States was dated Sunday evening and we guessed the year from the contents of the letter. The picture was sent by a relative in England and is an amazing story how we found him. Thanks again Leila in Ontario, Canada

    2. Hi list, On the question of Ewas Harold, I have a long ago relative called Hilda Watkins, don't know if it is her married name or single name. However, she married a jeweller of Ewas Harold. Any information gratefully recieved. Family surnames are: Smith, Williams, Rather, Pugh, Evans, Jones, to name a few, crossing borders between Hereford and Radnorshire at various times, starting in the 1700s from Kington. 1. Coroner's Reports and newspapers
    2. Hello Phil Bufton, I saw your reply to the question about Coroner's Reports for Herefordshire. Newspapers.\ That is all very well and good for the period when newspapers were in existance. However, I have a query for 1721. Way before newspapers came into being. In the Parish of Kington, I have a murder of a Walter Smith, at least I think he might be mine, who was murdered by his nephew in his tanyard. I would like to find out whether this man, or his nepew are related to me, but what now? Thank you for your time and effort. Maureen Jenkins Rhondda

    3. I'd like to say "Thanks" to Phil and Polly for the 1841 & 1851 census information for George & Thomas Powell of Canondale farm. I have another question regarding another relative. How would I find information which may have appeared in a newspaper in about October 1933? The information that I have is there was a bad automobile accident and Will Hartland, his wife & daughter and my great aunt, Kitty (Katie) Garstone were in the car. The letter I have states "the car slid and overturned & Will was killed, his wife's arm was broken & badly bruised all over & is still in hospital last week and his daughter's nose broken". "Kitty got bad lacerations about the head & face". Apparently the accident happened on a hill at Callow when Will hit a pole. I wrote to the daughter, Phyllis Hartland, a few years ago but I have since found out that she died before the letter was written. I don't know the wife's name. "Will" (William Benjamin Hartland) was 8 on the 1881 census, his parents were William Edward Hartland and Harriett Preece. I know the parents lived at Little Dewchurch. Thank you for any information. 3. This looks like the family, Vicky. 1861 census: William GRIFFITHS sawyer aged 56 at Burcott Row, parish of St John, Hereford, with Prudence aged 52, Henry aged 20, Maria aged 13, Charles 11, all born Hereford. William & Prudence seemed to be at 12 Friars Street in 1851 with Edwin 13, Henry 11, Ann 9, John 7, Maria, Charles, and Emily 9 months. In 1871, I could not find any Prudence or Phoebe, and no William entirely suitable. Maureen Robinson.

    3. Hi Phil, Thanks for this, at least some Herefordshire reports survive. Up here no Coroner's reports have survived to reach the Teesside Archives, luckily their local paper collection is superb, and I found a good account of an inquest for someone who needed a lookup. 3. Would someone please check the 1851 census for Holme Lacey for me? This is what I think it says? I am looking for George Powele who owned the Canon Dale farm and also the Wall's Pool farm. Househole 44 - Canon Dale George Powele / Head / Widow / age 70 / Farmer of 30 acres / born Holme Lacy Thomas Powele / Son / age 37 / Farmer's son / born Little Birch James Powele / I think this says Serv (not Son?) / age 14 / Occupation - Farmer's Serv? or Son? / born Dorstone Hester Jones / Ditto (for servant?) / General (?) / age 50 / born Gloucestershire The is a sarcophagus in Little Dewchurch cemetery for George Powell who died Oct 26, 1859 and I believe that this is the man listed above. The inscription says he is aged 79 years. His wife is there also - Susannah who died June 29, 1838. I can't make out the age at death - is it 50 years or 70 years? Thomas, their son's inscription says he died July 7, 1857 but I couldn't make out the age - is it (?)9 years. If Thomas was 37 in 1851 census he was born c1814? If he died in 1857 and born 1814 he would be about 45 years of age? Perhaps the (?)9 years isn't right either. I would be grateful for any help that I receive. Thanks in advance. Also in the early days they were not very consistent over the spelling. In the attached text file are the Phillips and variants entries in the Herefordshire Burial Index of the Herefordshire FHS for the years before 1750. They may help. We have not got very far with these early burials, so the index is far from complete.
