    2. Elvery
    3. I have found 2 sets of indentures for my g.g.grandfather Nathaniel Nelmes of Lyonshall Hereford. On the first one on 25th May 1821 he was placed as a poor child apprentice to Joseph Parker (carpenter). The second on 7th June 1822 he was apprenticed to James William Perry in the "Art or Mystery of good husbandry" I presume that the first apprenticeship failes but would like to know more about this process & also if anyone is researching the families involved. Thanks Elvery Chambers Perth West Australia

    1. Thomas PRICE, Sawyer
    2. C Moorey
    3. I see the list is pretty quiet at the moment but I hope that there's still a few readers around. I'm trying to discover something of my 4xg grandfather Thomas PRICE in Herefordshire. All that I think I know of him is that he probably married Ann GWILLIM in Clifford in 1824. My 3xg grandmother, his daughter Martha, was born in Norton Canon, about 1830, according to census images after her marriage in Middlesex. In the 1851 census Ann PRICE, widow, 48, is living with her married sister Mary 55, both born Kinnersley, and husband John ROBB in Middlesex, but she is not with them in the 1841 census. I have found in the 1841 census in Norton Canon the following:- Looks like living in 'Kedcastle' ?, with 'Parks' further down the page Ann PREECE, 41, widow Martha PREECE, 10 Thomas PREECE, 8, all born in county Does anyone think that this could be them. There is another PREECE family further down the page, a Sawyer as Thomas was. James PREECE, 30, Sawyer Eleanor PREECE, 25 James PREECE, 3 George PREECE, 2 all born county Does anyone have any thoughts or connections to these families. I have from the burial index the following:- Thomas Price, 51, buried Peterchurch 15 May 1838 Thomas Price, 50, buried Hereford 2 Oct 1838 Thomas Price, 62, buried Clifford 4 Oct 1838 One of these may be him, but the burial index only goes up to 1839, so my Thomas may not be there at all. I'm trying to match up with death registrations so that I can order a death certificate. I would appreciate any advice on how to proceed now. Kind regards, Cathy in South Australia

    1. Powell & Hartland
    2. Leila Churchill
    3. Thank you to Angela for your information. My Wm. B. Hartland was involved with the Saw Mill. In fact, I understand that his daughter also worked for the Saw Mill company buying timber. This would have been long before it would have been considered a job for a lady. Her name was Phyllis Hartland. I'd also like to clarify the information for our Harriet Hartland, in case, someone else needs to know. My great grand mother's sister, Harriet Preece married William Edward Hartland and it's this Harriet Hartland who is buried in Little Dewchurch cemetery. She is the one that I received the photo of the tombstone and it is very difficult to read. On the 1881 census at Weaven she lived with her husband William E. and her children, Ellen E., and Sarah C. There is another Harriet Hartland who died in Little Dewchurch 9 Mar 1889 (info. received from Polly). A letter sent to my great grandmother in Canada says: "Aunty Harriett --- was so weak that she could not stand against this attack of bronchitis and the poor old soul died on the 9th -- was buried on Friday (15th?) last, at The Lea where her husband was buried. I believe that this Harriet Hartland is on the 1881 census for Little Dewchurch with her sister Sarah Hartland, both are Annuitants and they live at Broadway House. Would she really be her sister or maybe a sister-in-law because there was not enough space on the column for the "in-law"? How would I find out Harriet's husband's first name? Thank everyone for your help with my family.

    1. RE: George Powell
    2. Angela Monaghan
    3. Hi Leila, William's marriage is on freebmd - June 1904 Hereford 6a 1096 - which means his wife was either Mabel Caroline Arnold or Sarah Ethelda Edwards. William was living at 15 The Parade, Monthmouth as a boarder in 1901 - image sent off list. I have looked for him in a couple of trade directories on the Historical Directories site in case that threw up his wife - couldn't see him in the Herefordshire 1913 directory but there was a W.B. Hartland in the Kelly's Directory of Monmouthshire 1914 who is Secretary of Monmouth Steam Saw Mills and Living at May Hill House, Monmouth - this would fit with him being a commercial clerk (1901). To see this, go to http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/index.asp and search for Wales 1910s, then click on Kelly's Directory of Monmouthshire 1914 and search for Hartland. Doesn't mention his wife though. This doesn't help with your car crash but hope it's of interest! Angela In Brighouse, West Yorkshire -----Original Message----- From: Leila Churchill [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: 24 March 2006 01:38 To: [email protected] Subject: George Powell I'd like to say "Thanks" to Phil and Polly for the 1841 & 1851 census information for George & Thomas Powell of Canondale farm. I have another question regarding another relative. How would I find information which may have appeared in a newspaper in about October 1933? The information that I have is there was a bad automobile accident and Will Hartland, his wife & daughter and my great aunt, Kitty (Katie) Garstone were in the car. The letter I have states "the car slid and overturned & Will was killed, his wife's arm was broken & badly bruised all over & is still in hospital last week and his daughter's nose broken". "Kitty got bad lacerations about the head & face". Apparently the accident happened on a hill at Callow when Will hit a pole. I wrote to the daughter, Phyllis Hartland, a few years ago but I have since found out that she died before the letter was written. I don't know the wife's name. "Will" (William Benjamin Hartland) was 8 on the 1881 census, his parents were William Edward Hartland and Harriett Preece. I know the parents lived at Little Dewchurch. Thank you for any information. 1. Cox: help with place names please
    2. Sian Plant
    3. Back after a few month's absence and still pursuing my Cox family. I have now tracked them down to Tewkesbury in the 1861 Census (RG9/1806/41/25) but I would appreciate some help with place names: Thomas head 38 years was born in "Churchend" - I can see that Church End is north of Tewkesbury just off the A38 but having checked GENUKI I do not know whether it is Glos or Hereford - or one of those awful places that alternates. Can anyone help? Eliza his wife 35 years was born somewhere that looks like Poun*ho*e : I cannot find anywhere that looks like this in either county, but I would guess it somewhere around Tewkesbury - any suggestions please? Harriet and Louisa their daughters, 9 and 7 respectively, were born in "Hereford" but I suspect this means the country rather than the City. Still can't find them on the 1871 census anywhere. Love to hear from anyone looking for this family. thanks Sian

    2. Summerson Family
    3. Re Coroners' reports: though I have not found coroners' reports as such, I have found accounts of inquests on three of my family members in various Herefordshire newspapers between 1845 and 1915. The staff at the Hereford Library and the Records Office have been very obliging in looking these up and photocopying them for a small charge. Normally, inquests were held very soon indeed after a death and commonly in the home of the deceased. The newspaper reports therefore follow very shortly. I have found the write-ups to contain verbatim accounts of the evidence given, plus details of witnesses etc, and they have provided me with a fascinating insight into family history, often including details I have not obtained anywhere else. Good luck with the search! Liz Summerson

    2. Maureen, Try looking at the Hereford journal. See the Herefordshire Family History Society web page http://www.rootsweb.com/~ukhfhs/news.html which give details of the newspapers including "Hereford Journal and General Advertiser for the Counties of Hereford, Brecon, Radnor, Monmouth, Salop, Worcester and Gloucester, published by Mr. John McCoy. Established 1713, printed every Friday evening for Saturday - price 'one penny' - Politics Conservative."
