    1. William MEREDITH -- cross posting
    2. Ruth Ann Baker
    3. Looking for additional details about William MEREDITH, the eldest child of James MEREDITH and Elizabeth PITT, particularly his marriages and his death. He was christened/baptized 26 May 1806 at Peterchurch, Herefordshire, England. Most of his siblings were christened/baptized at Clodock Parish, Longtown Township, Herefordshire, England between 1808 and 1828. One brother may have been born in Abergavenny, Monmouthshire. It is thought his parents are the James MEREDITH and Elizabeth shown on the 1851 census at Redlay Farm, Cusop Parish, Herefordshire. They continued to live in that area and at nearby Clyro, Radnorshire, Wales. Both these individuals were buried at St. Michael's, Clyro, Radnorshire, Wales, it appears. One of his brothers and one of his sisters were also in the same area, appearing on some census records with the parents. He had one brother that was married in Glamorganshire, was in Lower Merthyr Tydfil area for 1841 census, and died in 1849 shortly after arriving in the United States. William MEREDITH is not listed in the will of his maternal grandfather, James PITT Sr., written in 1832, proved in 1834. The will of his maternal uncle, James PITT Jr., written in 1840 and proved in 1844, mentions that William MEREDITH is deceased. William's two unnamed children are included in provisions of the will. So it appears William MEREDITH died sometime between 1832 and 1840. It is believed that the following are William's two children. If so, he may have married twice. Have not been successful in locating when William married or where. a. Juliana Pitt MEREDITH, christened/baptized 27 April 1831, Hay, Breconshire, Wales. Her parents are William MEREDITH and Mary. b. Caroline Pitt MEREDITH, christened/baptized 12 March 1833, Hay, Breconshire, Wales. Her parents are William MEREDITH and Elizabeth. Ruth Ann Baker United States

    1. Thomas John MEREDITH--cross posting
    2. Ruth Ann Baker
    3. Would like to find information on the youngest of nine children of James MEREDITH and Elizabeth PITT. Thomas John MEREDITH was christened/baptized 7 December 1828 in Clodock Parish, Longtown Township, Herefordshire, England. His three next oldest siblings were all three christened/baptized in October 1825 in Clodock. He has one brother that may have been born in Abergavenny, Monmouthshire and another that was christened/baptized at Peter Church, Herefordshire, England. Would like to find out if he did marry, to whom, date, where, did he have any children. He was listed by name in the will of his maternal grandfather, James PITT Sr., written in 1832, proved in 1834. Also he is listed by name in the will of his maternal uncle, James PITT Jr., written in 1840, proved in 1844. So it appears he died after October of 1840. It is believed that his parents are the James MEREDITH and Elizabeth that were living on Redlay Farm, Cusop Parish, Herefordshire when 1851 census was taken. If so, he was not with them on that census. They continued to live there and in nearby Clyro, Radnorshire, Wales. Both these individuals were buried at St. Michael's, Clyro Radnorshire, Wales, it appears. His eldest brother was living in Hay, Breconshire, Wales and apparently died between the time of the 1832 and 1840 Pitt wills. His two surviving children were mentioned in the 1840 will. He had a brother that married in Glamorganshire in 1836 and was in the Lower Merthyr Tydfil area when 1841 census was taken. By 1849 this brother was in the United States and died shortly after his arrival of cholera. He had four sisters. One of these appears to have died before the 1840 will, one after 1840, one was unmarried and may have died at Cusop or Clyro about 1879, and one that may have died in 1849 of cholera after going to the United States. 3. Hi Malcolm >>I am about to apply for Mary's death certificate, but I do not expect it >>to add anything to the information that I have already.<< Let's hope for your sake that it describes her as the "Widow of Isaac CHADWICK" and that the informant is "James CHADWICK, Son"! Kind regards Polly To summarise... Isaac CHADDOCK baptised at All Saints, HEREFORD 28 Apr 1767; parents JAMES CHADDOCK and Jane. Isaac CHADWICK married at St Mary, Fownhope 8 Nov 1792 to Mary BRYAN. 3. Thanks once again Alec for your speedy response. I was in England in April and finding myself with a day to spare, I made an unplanned visit to Hereford. I must say that everyone there was extremely helpful. I came away with lots of information which I have since been able to analyse and organise. I was also able to take photocopies of register entries and apply for some certificates. Subsequent research using internet resources has enabled me to reach preliminary conclusions that ultimately must lead to another visit to the Hereford CRO. My 3x Great Grandfather was James CHADWICK (or CHADDOCK) born about 1798 at Bullingham. He was baptised 1803 at Upper Bullingham, mother Mary CHADWICK. There are two other baptisms at Upper Bullingham ascribed to Mary CHADWICK; Margaret (1806) and Harriet (1817). Harriet died in 1818. There was another CHADWICK, Richard, born at Bullingham in 1806, but I haven't been able to locate his baptismal record. However, Richard appears in the 1841 census at Bullingham, on the same page as Mary CHADWICK. Mary died later in 1841 aged 83. There was also a Mary CHADWICK (nee BRYAN) who married Isaac CHADDOCK at Fownhope in 1792. There were 4 children: Francis (b. 1793), Charles (b. 1795), Catherine (c. 1797) and Lydia (c. 1800). I haven't found a baptismal record for Charles, but the others were baptised at Fownhope. Isaac died in 1796. Only Francis is ascribed to Isaac & Mary, Catherine and Lydia are ascribed to Mary CHADWICK only. It would be easy to reach the conclusion that the two Mary CHADWICKs are one and the same. However, my 3x Great Grandfather James identifies his birthplace as Bullingham in the various census. His birthdate of 1798 at Bullingham is inconsistent with the baptism of Lydia at Fownhope in 1800. If Mary had moved to Bullingham after the death of Isaac, then it would be reasonable to expect that Lydia be baptised at Bullingham and not Fownhope. I am about to apply for Mary's death certificate, but I do not expect it to add anything to the information that I have already. To summarise... Isaac CHADDOCK baptised at All Saints, HEREFORD 28 Apr 1767; parents JAMES CHADDOCK and Jane. Isaac CHADWICK married at St Mary, Fownhope 8 Nov 1792 to Mary BRYAN. Francis CHADDOCK baptised at St Mary, Fownhope 17 Mar 1793; parents Isaac CHADDOCK & Mary. Charles CHADDOCK born at Fownhope 1795 (Death Certificate). Catherine CHADDOCK baptised at St Mary, Fownhope 26 Feb 1797; mother Mary CHADDOCK. Lydia CHADDOCK baptised at St Mary, Fownhope 6 Apr 1800; mother Mary CHADDOCK. Isaac CHADWICK burial at St Mary, Fownhope 22 Apr 1796. James CHADDOCK born 1798 at Bullingham (1851, 1861 & 1871 census and Death Certificate). *** My 3x Great Grandfather *** James CHADDOCK baptised at Upper Bullingham 17 Jul 1803; mother MARY CHADDOCK. Margaret CHADWICK baptised at Upper Bullingham 7 Dec 1806; mother Mary CHADWICK. Richard CHADWICK born 1806 at Bullingham (1851 census and Death Certificate). 3. Thanks Val and Alec for their speedy response. I have replied to them both off-list. My 4x Great Grandmother was Mary CHADWICK. She died 6 Nov 1841 aged 83 at St John, Hereford. Would anyone have access to Hereford MIs? If there is an MI for her, it may well identify her husband. The baptismal register entry for my 3x Great Grandfather does not identify the father. Any help would be very much appreciated. Regards, Malcolm Jones [email protected] -- Internal Virus Database is out-of-date. Checked by AVG Free Edition. 3. Hi Malcolm, My Chadwicks are from Billington, Langho region of Lancashire. 1754 is the earliest I've found and his name was Ellis Chadock. It evolved to Chaddock, then Chadwick, then Chaddwick and finally Chadwick. Chadwick is a common name in Lancashire. 3. Hello List, I would appreciate any clarification that someone might bring to this. I had assumed that the family I had been researching had for some years lived at The Burcott, Hereford - on the strength of census info. The recent e-mails have made me wonder if in fact they lived a little closer to town, if as has been said Burcott Row (as was) is off Widemarsh Street. In 1871 mine were at Osborne Cottages (in All Saints parish.) They seem still to have been at the same address in 1881, but now it is given as Osborne Cotts., Burcott Row (again, in All Saints) Can anyone elucidate, please - and confirm that (for mine at least) St. John's parish is a red herring. Thanks, David

    1. Re: [HEF] Thomas AUSTIN at Norton Canon
    2. C Moorey
    3. Hi Des, this message also undeliverable so sending to list, Yes I already have Ann Preece with Martha and Thomas in the 1841 census, I purchased just the two 1841 census CDs from Archive CD Books that covered the villages that I'd seen mention of close to Norton Canon. I wasn't sure that it was her at first because when Martha married in 1852 in Middlesex, she married as Martha Price, (Martha and her widowed mother Ann, also in Middlesex weren't literate, and I guess their accents decided what was written) and I've therefore had difficulty finding anything about her. You coming up with the Kinnersley link first made me think of a possible in-law family connection to Austin, often that's what you need to change your thinking, so thank you.. As to finding the birth and baptism of Thomas AUSTIN, well I went to the FamilySearch site at <www.familysearch.org/> if you haven't used this site before, make sure you just search the IGI, and even there only take seriously the extracted records (it will tell you this at bottom of record) as these are directly transcribed from parish records. Some entries on the IGI are patron submissions from members of the LDS church, as filling in their ancestry is part of their religion. Many of these are taken from family lore, old bibles, some rely on supposition that everyone marries at 21, children born at correct intervals etc. I've even seen a birth recorded for a Mrs Sarah Preece (born married?) I've had another search today for Thomas AUSTIN that might better link with the Kings Pyon marriage, and although he didn't come on a search, a Thomas who looks like his father did come up in Kinnersley. By clicking on the batch number of the extracted record at bottom of page, I just searched for Austin with parents Thomas & Sarah and up came Thomas baptised 1803 with brother Edward baptised 1808 in Kinnersley. Strange he didn't come up on direct search, but the moral is never give up. I've been at this for a while now, but I'm still learning all the time. Learning that my Martha Price/Preece was born in Herefordshire was a learning curve for me, out came my A-Z familiarising myself with new place names. These lists are a boon, having someone more knowledgeable than you to answer your questions is wonderful, genealogy people are so very kind and helpful. I did a quick search for any James Preece marriages between 1856 to 1866 and these came up, they look beautiful on copy and paste, but I suspect that they may arrive less tidy.
