Researching both the above names in Hereford. Help! Cathy
Hello to all on the list; this is my first post. My 3xG.Grandparents were William Perks and Elizabeth Godsall who lived in Wellington from the mid 1850's. They had at least 4 children, Edward (my 2xG.Grandfather), William, Elizabeth & Fanny. I have been struggling big-time to trace William & Elizabeth's origins partly because I can find no reference to their marriage in the GRO indices and therefore no idea who their fathers were. Based on early census records, there were 2 possible Elizabeth Godsalls, both born in Wellington; Elizabeth Godsall, daughter of Richard & Mary Ann, baptised in Wellington on 23/2/1837 and Elizabeth Godsall daughter of Edward Godsall born ca. 1835. I subsequently realised that this second Elizabeth had in fact been baptised the illegitimate daughter of Frances Powell in 1834 and that 4 years later Frances had married Edward Godsall; Elizabeth then took Edward's surname. I believe this is 'my' Elizabeth, partly because the age matches better and also 2 of her children (Edward & Fanny) were probabl! y named after her parents. The remaining thorn in my side is therefore tracing William Perks; I understand that it was possible for entries to be missed from the GRO indices and that I could try asking Hereford Registry Office to search for the marriage. I have tried searching for Elizabeth Powell marrying William Perks just in case she reverted to her baptismal name at marriage but to no avail. To search in the Registry Office I need to have some idea of which church they married in; can anyone on the list confirm that marriages still took place in Wellington after 1838 as the IGI and other sources seem to only indicate banns being read after this year. William Perks gives his birthplace as Severn Stoke in Worcestershire in the 1861 & 71 censuses but I can find no one of this name in the 1851 census born in Severn Stoke. Any help or advice anyone can give would be very much appreciated! Richard
Unable to find the 1875 birth of a Gertrude I. PRICE, daughter to Edwin William PRICE (b. Dilwyn l827) by his "second wife" Rhoda (PRITCHARD) I have now found the birth reference for Gertrude Isabel PRITCHARD in Weobley in the December Qtr 1875. I believe this must be Gertrude's illegitimate birth to her mother Rhoda PRITCHARD. Is anyone able to help with a Weobley baptism for Gertrude? Many thanks Diane Johansen Researching PRICE Lyonshall, Weobley, Dilwyn

Forgive this cross posting please? Greetings to the list Members and warm greetings from Victoria Australia. I hope that someone on the list may be able to help me in my research with this family names as their seems to be conflicting information back here in Australia as a family with the same surname exists. Here is the information I have at hand, one Dorothy Anne Cookman born unknown and parents unknown at this stage, married one Marshall Robert Macfarlane on the 1st of October 1917? at Ickleford. Hurts, England. Marshall was an Australian World War one serviceman and injured during the war and was sent to England, it was during this time he meet Dorothy Ann Cookman after returning to Australia, he went back to England and married Dorothy Ann Cookman and then the both of them returned to Australia as Mr. & Mrs. Macfarlane. What I'm now looking for is help if someone could find record of this marriage please? And also if it were possible to find out who Dorothy parents were please? Marshall Robert Macfarlane was my Grandmothers brother, and this information is needed to finish this line of the family, I hope to be able to find this and be able to let Mother have this she is now turning 92 years. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you, Raymond Henderson.
Hi I was wondering if someone would be able to look up a birth for me. I am looking for the birth of Anne Constable. Ann was married to Richard Powis on 23rd August 1736 at All Saints, Herefordshire, I found the marriage on Family History Online and it also mentions Brimfield and Much Cowarne. Richard Powis was born at Brimfield, so I assumed that Ann would have been born at Much Cowarne, though it might be that she was just living there at the time of the marriage. Any help with the Powis and Constable family would be much appreciated Regards Eveline
Sorry folks, forget bit about mum only thats for birth certificates of course. Marriage certs are showing parent dad only, and on one I have gives both birth dad and the dad who adopted, being the second husband of the bride's mother. Apologies. Jo.
Hi Raymond The marriage that you want is this one: 1917 Dec (MACFARLANE Marshall R Hitchin 3a 1547 (COOKMAN Dorothy A which took place in Hertfordshire, not Herefordshire, so you might get more joy from a List covering that county. You can order the certificate online at: http://www.col.statistics.gov.uk/ this will give you details of the couple (age, marital condition, occupation and address) and their fathers' names and occupations. Hello Raymond, http://www.pjoiner.demon.co.uk/genuki/HRT/Ickleford/index.html shows Ickelford is in Hertfordshire (s.e.England), not in Herefordshire, a more pleasant part of the country, given as Hurts in your email. Had few credits left so went into 1837 on line which shows a Dorothy A. Cookman, married Macfarlane, Hitchin (Hertfordshire beware Chapman codes for abbreviations). December quarter 1917. The relevant volume and page numbers are given and I have saved but not at at all sure I have read them correctly, and it would mean a search of the site to check the numbers with the Macfarlane entry. (Five UK pounds paid in advance, gives about 50 searches). The marriage cert should be easily available with on-line purchase and hopefully give names of both sets of parents, though mum only if one of the participants born out of wedlock. Write me offline if you want to see my interpretation of the volume and page number for marriage, but do not rely upon my reading. Cheers, Jo. Shropshire, bordering Herefordshire

Have been somewhat successful in finding a few new details on the sons of James MEREDITH Sr. and Elizabeth PITT. Would now like to learn more about their daughters if possible. Can you offer some clues or suggestions of what to do next for each of these? 1. Elizabeth MEREDITH was christened/baptized 12 August 1810 in Clodock Parish, Herefordshire, England. She is not included in list of MEREDITH children in will of their maternal uncle, James PITT Jr., written in 1840; so it is assumed she died before that. The Herefordshire Burial Index shows an Elizabeth MEREDITH, age 12, of Michaelchurch, that was buried 13 June 1822 at Michaelchurch Escley. A number of PITT relatives of Elizabeth were buried there, so it seems likely this entry refers to this individual. How would I determine for sure it is her? 2. Margaret MEREDITH was christened/baptized 4 September 1814 in Clodock Parish, Herefordshire, England. She is mentioned in will of her maternal uncle, James PITT Jr., written in 1840. Have no idea when, where, who, or even if, she married. Details of her death also are not known. Do not know if she remained in Herefordshire, went to Radnorshire with her parents and three siblings, went to Breconshire with two other siblings, or went to Glamorganshire with another sibling. 3. Eleanor MEREDITH was one of three children in this family christened/baptized 30 October 1825 in Clodock Parish, Herefordshire, England. The child born just before these three was born in Abergavenny, Monmouthshire and his christening/baptism record has not been found yet. It appears Eleanor went to the United States with her brother James MEREDITH Jr. in 1849. James MEREDITH had married and lived in Glamorganshire, Wales for over ten years at the time they left. Do not know if Eleanor also lived in Glamorgan near him or not. BOTH Eleanor MEREDITH and James MEREDITH Jr. died of cholera before reaching their destination. On the passenger list she is shown as Eleanor WILLIAMS, which makes me wonder if she married while in England or Wales before leaving. How would you go about looking for a marriage with a range of possible years, such common surnames, and not knowing whether it occurred in Wales or England? The journal account of an individual traveling up the Mississippi River with the group gave the death account of these two as well as others, but gave her name as Eleanor MEREDITH. From ages given in these two records it appears she may have been born about 1822. 4. Hannah MEREDITH was also one of three children in the family christened/baptized 30 October 1825 in Clodock Parish, Herefordshire, England. She is with couple I believe to be her parents, at Clyro, Radnorshire, Wales when 1841 census was taken. She also is with them on one other census (but not all of them), when they were at Cusop, Herefordshire, England. Where would she be when not with her parents? With clues given by another researcher, it appears Hannah may never have married and died in 1879 at Cusop but was buried at Clyro. Ruth Ann Baker United States

Henry Pitt MEREDITH was the son of James MEREDITH and Elizabeth PITT, apparently the sixth child. He was one of three children of this couple that were christened/baptized on 30 October 1825, at Clodock Parish, Longtown Township, Herefordshire, England. Since he was listed first of the three, he may have been born as early as 1820. But the 1841 census gives another possibility. His exact birthdate is not known. He married his second wife, Anne HAMER, 12 January 1869, St. Mary's, Hay, Breconshire, Wales. Would like to find the name of his first wife plus when and where they married, also the names of their children. Also interested in determing when and where he died. His eldest brother also lived in Hay, Breconshire, Wales it appears, but died before 1840. His next eldest brother went to Glamorganshire where he married and is found on the 1841 census. The 1841 census for Clyro, Radnorshire, Wales shows a family at Paradise that I believe to be his parents, one brother, him, one sister. HO107 1456/f9/p9---James MEREDITH, Yeoman, 55; Elizabeth MEREDITH, 50; David MEREDITH, 20; Henry MEREDITH, 16; Hannah MEREDITH, 15. From 1851 census onward James, Elizabeth, and David are found at Redlay Farm, Cusop Parish, Herefordshire, England. Hannah is with them on some, but Henry is not. Burials at St. Michael's, Clyro, Radnorshire, Wales include James MEREDITH (1867), Elizabeth MEREDITH (1875), Hannah MEREDITH (1876), and David MEREDITH (1881). Henry's brother, David MEREDITH, apparently was born at Abergavenny, Monmouthshire. Know very little about his four sisters and even less about the spouses of two that may have married. Ruth Ann Baker United States
Trying to find when and where David MEREDITH was born and/or christened/baptized. He was the middle child (#5) of nine, of James MEREDITH Sr. and Elizabeth PITT. His siblings were christened/baptized on these dates, in these locations: 1. William MEREDITH, 26 May 1806, Peterchurch, Herefordshire, England. William was later believed to have lived in Hay, Breconshire and died between 1832 and 1840, leaving two children. 2. James MEREDITH, probably 17 January 1808 in Herefordshire. James married and lived in Glamorganshire before going to United States in 1849. 3. Elizabeth MEREDITH, 12 August 1810, Clodock Parish, Longtown Township, Herefordshire, England. She may have died by 1840. 4. Margaret MEREDITH, 4 September 1814, also at Clodock. She apparently died after 1840. 5. David himself (see notes that follow). 6. Henry Pitt MEREDITH, 30 October 1825 (same day as two other siblings, also at Clodock). 7. Eleanor MEREDITH, 30 October 1825 (same day as two other siblings, also at Clodock). She may have married and went to United States in 1849 with brother James. 8. Hannah MEREDITH , 30 October 1825 (same day as two other siblings, also at Clodock). 9. Thomas John MEREDITH, 7 December 1828, also at Clodock. It is believed that the James MEREDITH and Elizabeth shown at Redlay Farm, Cusop Parish, Herefordshire, England on the 1851 census are his parents. David MEREDITH is shown with them and is also there on later census records. His age on the different census records and probable death record vary somewhat, resulting in a birthdate from roughly 1816 to 1820. But it is consistent that he was born in Abergavenny, Monmouthshire. It further appears that James MEREDITH (1867), Elizabeth MEREDITH (1875), Hannah MEREDITH (1876), and David MEREDITH (1881), were all buried at St. Michael's, Clyro, Radnorshire, Wales (in the years indicated). David MEREDITH apparently never married. He was mentioned by name in the wills of his maternal grandfather James PITT Sr. (written 1832, proved 1834) and his maternal uncle James PITT Jr. (written 1840, proved 1844). In BOTH wills he received a larger portion than did his siblings. Ruth Ann Baker United States
