    1. RE: [HEF] CONVENT OF OUR LADY OF CHARITY AND REFUGE, BARTESTREE, HEREFORDSHIRE
    2. JOHN RICHARDSON
    3. Hi Tony, I was christened in 1936 at Bartestree Convent and knew several of the Nuns during my youth. Two of my grandparents and I believe, a great grandparent are buried in the tiny cemetery (Warning Go with your antihistamine at the ready). My father and grandfather Andrew and Walter Richardson were the local Tarrington butchers and they supplied meat to the Convent over many years. To the best of my knowledge the nuns took into their care young women who had got into trouble (all sorts), and I am not aware that they actually had their children there or indeed looked after them there. Post war I am fairly sure they did not. They ran an extremely efficient Laundry Service, which we used for many years for the butcher's aprons etc. This presumably helped pay for the keep of the "girls" (all ages I think). John RICHARDSON in Waikato New Zealand. -----Original Message----- From: Tony Smith [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Saturday, 27 May 2006 6:23 p.m. To: [email protected] Subject: [HEF] CONVENT OF OUR LADY OF CHARITY AND REFUGE, BARTESTREE, HEREFORDSHIRE Hi everyone, greetings from Sydney, Australia. My great aunt, Catherine Elizabeth Latham appears in the 1901 census at the Convent of Our Lady of Charity and Refuge. Beside the Nuns, there were a large number of young women recorded there as "inmates". Am I right in assuming that this was a place for unmarried mothers to go and have their babies? Catherine died in 1923 and although my grandmother (her sister) mentioned Elizabeth to me many years ago, she did seem a bit offhand about her. My grandmother died way back in 1967. Is there any way to find out more about the convent and its records? Here's hoping. 3. Tony, Thanks for the 1881 census information and possible death of Thomas John Meredith. This MEREDITH family is indeed proving challenging as they move from one county to another! I can see (not only with Thomas, but also his siblings) that I need to become more familiar with the details of geography in that part of the country and civil areas so I know when a place looks like a possibility. It seems that the Thomas MEREDITH and Elizabeth you have shared had no children. This makes finding out more about him even more difficult. But each additional clue seems to indicate he is indeed the one that was son of James MEREDITH and Elizabeth PITT. I had not considered looking south nor looking for Elizabeth and Elvira without Thomas. Appreciate your help from so far away. Needing to depend primarily for online sources is sometimes frustrating. But a reply like yours is most welcome. Thanks again. It appears to me that some of the records below may refer to the same individual, but each time a different place of birth is given! Because of this, do you have suggestions of additional things to do to determine if any of these are indeed the individual I am seeking? Plus, do you have details on any of these that could eliminate them from consideration? A deceased brother had been living in Hay, Breconshire, Wales with his family. c. Another brother was living in Glamorganshire, Wales with his wife and young daughters. d. Do not know where Thomas John MEREDITH was at this time, but he would have been about 12 or 13 years old. 1851 census a. Llangattock, Breconshire, Wales shows a Thomas MEREDITH, lodger, age 3, (born about 1848) at Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, Wales. Might this be a son of Thomas John MEREDITH (who had one brother born in Abergavenny)? b. Have not yet found Thomas John MEREDITH, about 22 or 23 years old, on this census. Have not yet been successful in finding a marriage record for Thomas John MEREDITH. 1861 census a. Ystraddyfodwg, Glamorgan, Wales shows a Thomas MEREDITH, age 33, (born about 1828) at Hay, Breconshire, Wales. b. Llangattock, Breconshire, Wales shows a Thomas MEREDITH, born about 1829 at Llanvens, Herefordshire, England; his wife Elizabeth MEREDITH, born about 1824 in Berkley, Gloucestershire, England; a lodger Edmond MEREDITH, born about 1821 in Usk, Monmouthshire, Wales (have not yet come upon an Edmond MEREDITH in our family of ancestors); a nephew Lewis MEREDITH, born about 1840 in Bremen, Llanelly. 1871 census--on Mill Street, Llangattock, Breconshire, Wales shows a Thomas MEREDITH, born about 1828 in Cluddock, Herefordshire, Wales with wife Elizabeth MEREDITH, born about 1826 in Little Dean, Gloucestershire, England, and a servant girl. 1881 census--at number 10 Woodside Road in Civil Parish Flaxley, Gloucestershire, England, was a Thomas MEREDITH, beerhouse keeper, age 51, (born about 1830) at Littledean Hill (East Dean), Gloucestershire, England; wife Elizth. MEREDITH, born about 1824 in Lea Bailey, Gloucestershire, England; and a granddaughter, Jane Stephens, born about 1868 in Littldean Hill, Gloucestershire, England. Ruth Ann Baker United States

    3. Hi All Like Phil I too will be on Duty on Bank Holiday Monday, but in my case 12 noon to 2pm on the Bromyard and District Local History Society stand at Lower Brockhampton House, where we are joining in their 60th Anniversary celebrations. There is also a Plant, Produce and Craft Fair, so plenty to interest all! The exhibition is also there over the weekend, on Saturday and Sunday (12 - 4), but I'm afraid that normal admission prices to the property (which is National Trust) apply on all days. Hope to see some of you there! Polly

I have been struggling big-time to trace William & Elizabeth's origins partly because I can find no reference to their marriage in the GRO indices and therefore no idea who their fathers were.
