Hi Anyone looking for possible living relatives - particularly if the name is reasonably unusual, like BEMAND - would be well advised to invest in a subscription to www.eroll.co.uk which is an electoral roll site. The good thing is you can subscribe for a month at a time at £9.95 (but don't forget to cancel if you don't want to continue!). You can search on surname and area only, for example, to come up with a list of possible relatives. BEMAND and Herefordshire produces a list of names and addresses of several BEMANDs around Leominster, Risbury, Stoke Prior etc. Liz

Last month I inquired about Henry Pitt MEREDITH. Death certificates received this week for other family members have yielded some very helpful clues about him. Can you answer some of the questions that follow or offer suggestions of what to do next? The 1881 census for Abergavenny, Monmouthshire looks very possible but poses some questions. It is RG 11, piece 5234, folio 58, page 27. 1. Henry MERDITH (slight spelling difference) is indexed as age 40, born in Cloduck, Herefordshire, a retired goldminer. He was living at 6 Brecon Road. When I look at the actual image, I think his age is 60. Does it look like that to you? Henry Pitt MEREDITH was one of three children in the family christened/baptized on 30 October 1825 in Clodock, Herefordshire, so his exact year of birth is not known. 2. It is believed Henry Pitt MEREDITH had two wives. The name of his first wife is not yet known. He married second wife, Ann Hamer, in January 1869 in Hay, Breconshire. This fits with the ages of children and name of wife shown on this census. 3. His son William T. MERDITH was born in America about 1862. Does this refer just to the United States or could it also include Canada? The only Henry MEREDITH individuals I have found so far on passenger lists in right time period for New York City went to Canada. Can you find Henry and his family on the 1871 census in the British Isles? Henry Pitt MEREDITH registered the death of his mother Elizabeth MEREDITH (born Elizabeth PITT and widow of James MEREDITH) in June 1875 at Redlay Farm, Cusop, Herefordshire. She was buried in Clyro, Radnorshire (across the river). Henry gave his residence as 68 Merthyr Road, Abergavenny, Monmouthshire. When his brother David MEREDITH died at Redlay Farm, Cusop, Herefordshire, in August 1881, Henry Pitt MEREDITH registered the death. This time Henry gave his residence as Brecon Road, Abergavenny, Monmouthshire. (This is a major clue that makes me think the above 1881 census record actually is Henry.) David too was buried in Clyro, Radnorshire. I have found Henry Pitt MEREDITH with his parents and a couple of siblings on the 1841 census at Clyro, Radnorshire. The parents and brother David were on 1851, 1871, 1881 census records at Redlay Farm, Cusop, Herefordshire. Have not been able to locate Henry Pitt MEREDITH on the 1851 or 1861 census records. There is a remote possibility that he is in the United States for the 1860 census, but without name of first wife it is hard to tell for sure. Nor have I found a possible death year for him that fits known details. Looking forward to hearing from listers that may be able to help. Ruth Ann Baker United States
Polly, either you have a sixth sense or you are working at the Record Office !! Mary is indeed described as "Widow of Isaac CHADWICK", but the informant wasn't my 3x Great Grandfather, but his younger brother Richard whom she was living with at the time. I now have a situation whereby my 3xGreat Grandfather, James CHADWICK, was born the illegitimate son of Mary. At the time of his birth, Isaac was already dead and could not have been his father. The same applies to several other siblings including Richard. This means that my CHADWICK line, which is extensive, is not genetically CHADWICK at all! I haven't yet seen the baptismal register, but the IGI record gives only the mother's name. So, I may never know who gave rise to all those CHADWICKs, most of whom moved to Birmingham to lay the cobblestones on the streets. Thank you to all of those listers that replied to my original posting. Malcolm Jones -----Original Message----- From: Polly Rubery [mailto:[email protected]] Let's hope for your sake that it describes her as the "Widow of Isaac CHADWICK" and that the informant is "James CHADWICK, Son"! -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Hi I am new to this list and thought I would post my interests. I am looking for any BEMAND ancestors that originally came from Church Stoke, Montgomeryshire in Wales (around the 1830's) and moved to Leominster (Humber / Risbury) area. I believe they lived at Upper Farm House in Humber and a relative still lives there to this day, but unfortunately don't know who they are. In 1876 my 3x great grandfather, Robert BEMAND was the Rector of St. Mary's Church in Humber and his daughter Fanny BEMAND married William Henry DICKENS who was the School Master of the National School (Church School) at that time. My line descends from William H DICKENS and Fanny E BEMAND. Their children were Arthur Stanley DICKENS and Harold Evelyn DICKENS. Both born in Humber at the House which is attached to the National School. I am not sure but I also believe that Robert BEMAND (buried June 1899) and his wife Sarah were buried at the St. Mary's Churchyard in Humber. Don't know if William H DICKENS was buried there in June 1885. I would love to hear from anyone who is related to the BEMANDS or DICKENS, and anyone who has photo's of teachers of the National School during 1875 - 1885. Regards Holly Oakley Sydney, Australia
Hi Holly I'm not related to either BEMAND or DICKENS but thought you might be interested in these people listed in Kelly's 1934 Directory of Herefordshire:- Low Brook, Risbury The Misses Agnes M and Kate L BEMAND, smallholders Risbury Court, Risbury Robert Henry BEMAND, hop grower Upper House, Risbury Walter Henry BEMAND, farmer Risbury is a hamlet within Humber Parish, 1 mile to the south-east of Humber, and has remains of a British camp. My great grandmother Maria Bullock (nee Portlock) from Gloucestershire moved with her husband William Bullock to Hereford. In 1901 they appear in the census of Canon Frome. In 1906 my grandmother, on her wedding certificate, states that her father is deceased. I have obtained a marriage certificate of Maria which shows that in 1913 she marries William Walwyn of Bromyard, father James Walwyn deceased. If my great grandfather is on the 1901 census and my great grandmother remarries in 1913 then I have a time span. So far I have been unable to find the death of William Bullock so that I can narrow the time span down and try and search somewhere for what happened. If anyone can give me any pointers of where to look it would be appreciated. Thank you June
I have a marriage in 1913 between my great grandmother and her second husband. The wedding took place in the Registry Office in Bromyard by Certificate. Would there be any other information that I could access regarding this marriage. Thank you June
Thanks Colin, I've made a note of that - have emailed Hereford Archives requesting they check the Madley PR's for a possible bapt. match c.1798/99 for a John MEREDITH - if that comes back no trace then Cradley will go into the hat. Away from Madley, the closest we can get so far for a match is at Weobly (6-8 miles north of Madley) re John MEREDITH son of John * Elizabeth, bapt. 17 Nov 1797. Can anyone claim this John? David P Meredith Nottingham > Hi David > There is Cradley near Worcestershire boundry not far from Malvern WORCS ?
Hi List, Recently acquired Army records have revealed the following details for my 3*grt grandfather. John MEREDITH (alias MERREDDITH) born c.1798/1799 at Madley nr Hereford - later doc's quote 'Hadley' which I think must be an error. John enlisted with the Rifle Brigade at Gloucester in 1816 at which time he stated he was a 'Tailor' by trade. The IGI doesn't appear to cover the village of Madley for the relevant period. However, the NBI carries 3 burial entries for MEREDITHs which does at least confirm a 'Meredith' presence in the village: 1815 - James MEREDITH - aged 57 yrs 1826 - Mary MEREDITH - aged 85 yrs 1827 - James MEREDITH - aged 87 yrs Having joined the Army John served in Ireland and Canada eventually ending his days in Richmond, SRY. He did name a son James, so perhaps he was related to one or more of the James Merediths listed above. I would be interested to hear from anyone who might have connections with the Madley Merediths. Dear Listers, I am looking for any information on Rev William BAYLIS. I found a link with Hereford in a Settlement Bond Dated Aug 27 1760 "William Hale of St Nicholas Bristol, brazier, Hannah Baylis widow for expected child of the Rev.William & Margaret Baylis----- the child of the Revd William Baylis now of the city of HEREFORD is likely to be born in Westerleigh Gloucestershire." I haven't found a child born to William & Margaret in the Westerleigh baptisms. I have found a marriage of William BAYLIS & Margaret COLLINS on IGI 15th May 1760 Little Birch Hereford The Hannah BAYLIS mentioned in the Bond may be my 5GGrandmother and I would like to find out if the Rev.William fits into my Baylis family. Hoping someone can help. Best Wishes, Margaret
